The dynamics of cyclopentadiene (CP) following optical excitation at 243 nm was investigated by time-resolved pump−probe X-ray scattering using 16.2 keV X-rays at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We present the first ultrafast structural evidence that the reaction leads directly to the formation of bicyclo[2.1.0]pentene (BP), a strained molecule with three- and four-membered rings. The bicyclic compound decays via a thermal backreaction to the vibrationally hot CP with a time constant of 21 ± 3 ps. A minor channel leads to ring-opened structures on a subpicosecond time scale.

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Among Lutheran denominations in America, the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations privileges the free activity of the congregation with a unique church polity. Because of its rarity, the AFLC is especially concerned that a correct understanding of its polity be taught at its schools and passed on effectively to future generations. One way to ensure that this occurs successfully is through a combination of theological and historical instruction. Historical education has been in decline for several hundred years due to developments in Western thought. Nevertheless, significant arguments can be made for the necessity of an historical and narrative understanding of …

Static Reflective Surfaces For Improved Terahertz Coverage, Thanh Le, Suresh Singh May 2024

Static Reflective Surfaces For Improved Terahertz Coverage, Thanh Le, Suresh Singh

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

LoS (Line of Sight) MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) is considered the best way to deliver high capacity channels for terahertz communications due to the severe attenuation suffered by reflected components. Unfortunately, terahertz links are easily blocked by any obstruction resulting in link breakage. Therefore, it is necessary to provide alternative paths via reflectors. A problem shared by LoS paths and reflected paths (via polished reflectors) is that the channel matrix is rank 1 in the far-field. As a result, the achieved capacity is lower than what can theoretically be achieved in a rich multi-path environment. In this work, we …

Current Small-Scale Cmb Constraints To Axionlike Early Dark Energy, Tristan L. Smith, V. Poulin May 2024

Current Small-Scale Cmb Constraints To Axionlike Early Dark Energy, Tristan L. Smith, V. Poulin

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The south pole telescope (SPT) SPT-3G 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) data set (temperature and polarization) is used to place constraints on an axionlike model of early dark energy (EDE). These data do not favor axionlike EDE and place an upper limit on the maximum fraction of the total energy density 𝑓EDE < 0.172 (at the 95% confidence level, C.L.). This is in contrast with Atacama Cosmology telescope’s (ACT) fourth data release (DR4) which gives 𝑓EDE = 0.15⁢0 +0.050/-0.078. When combining CMB measurements with measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations and luminosity distance to type Ia supernovae, we show that the tension with the S⁢𝐻₀ ⁡ES measurement of the Hubble parameter goes up from 2.6⁢𝜎 with 𝑃⁢𝑙⁢𝑎⁢𝑛⁢𝑐⁢𝑘 to 2.9⁢𝜎 with 𝑃⁢𝑙⁢𝑎⁢𝑛⁢𝑐⁢𝑘+SPT−3⁢G 2018. …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The future trajectory of global forests is closely intertwined with tree demography, and a major fundamental goal in ecology is to understand the key mechanisms governing spatio-temporal patterns in tree population dynamics. While previous research has made substantial progress in identifying the mechanisms individually, their relative importance among forests remains unclear mainly due to practical limitations. One approach to overcome these limitations is to group mechanisms according to their shared effects on the variability of tree vital rates and quantify patterns therein. We developed a conceptual and statistical framework (variance partitioning of Bayesian multilevel models) that attributes the variability in …
