Anxious, Stressed, Or Overwhelmed: The Typical Sensory Processing Pattern Of First-Year Occupational Therapy Students, Caroline V. Holsclaw May 2024

Anxious, Stressed, Or Overwhelmed: The Typical Sensory Processing Pattern Of First-Year Occupational Therapy Students, Caroline V. Holsclaw

Honors Theses

This research discusses the four sensory processing patterns, sensory sensitivity, sensory avoidant, sensory seeking, and low registration, demonstrated by first year occupational therapy doctoral program students. These four patterns describe how our brains process sensory information from the environment and from our bodies. These patterns have been linked to many things in one’s life such as their attachment styles, anxiety disorders, and quality of life, and neurologically connected to the parasympathetic nervous system which is involved with the fight or flight response. Understanding your own sensory processing pattern and preferences can help you understand how you can find sensory input …

Reading Between The Lines: Understanding College Students' Literacy Skills, Alexandra M. Jones May 2024

Reading Between The Lines: Understanding College Students' Literacy Skills, Alexandra M. Jones

Honors Theses

Given that reading is a complex and multifaceted process, we need a better understanding of how different reading measures assess college students’ reading skills. Furthermore, this study evaluates what reading skills are most influential in determining undergraduate students' GPA. We investigated the relationship between different reading skills (i.e., comprehension, vocabulary, metacognitive awareness, and critical reading behaviors) and academic performance (GPA). Reading skills are especially important within university settings because they are required for academic success. We recruited a sample of 100 students through an online survey hosted on Qualtrics. We found that ACT Reading scores significantly predict GPA. However, vocabulary, …

Fixing Kentucky: A Comparative Analysis Of The Spay And Neuter Options Available To Rural Kentucky Counties, Emma M. Spurlock May 2024

Fixing Kentucky: A Comparative Analysis Of The Spay And Neuter Options Available To Rural Kentucky Counties, Emma M. Spurlock

Honors Theses

The objective of this research is to determine if there is a substantial difference in the availability of spay and neuter resources in rural Kentucky counties compared to urban Kentucky counties. An analysis of the Kentucky Animal Control Advisory board meeting minutes over the past ten years was conducted to determine how spay and neuter programs are funded, what counties receive funding, and the process for requesting spay and neuter grant support. Rural Kentucky communities are underserved regarding spay and neuter resources because of insufficient funding, limited veterinary and animal care, and inadequate government involvement. Improving access to spay and …

Mental Health And Theologies Of Suffering, Sarah Skrove May 2024

Mental Health And Theologies Of Suffering, Sarah Skrove

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Theologies of suffering have been used by theologians, ministers, and faithful alike to try to understand why God allows innocent suffering. These ideas have been applied to wars, violence, starvation, grief, mental health challenges, and the list goes on. The primary focus of this project is the impact that theologies of suffering have had on the perception of mental health, the experience of those enduring the suffering, and the stigma surrounding treatment. While certain theological narratives are helpful for an individual to find meaning in their own pain, theologians must be careful of uninvited application of scholarship to another’s lived …

Electron Counting, Dopant Implementation, & Electron Phonon Interaction Mesh Sensitivity Testing For Nanoscale Energy Transport Model, Dominick Velez May 2024

Electron Counting, Dopant Implementation, & Electron Phonon Interaction Mesh Sensitivity Testing For Nanoscale Energy Transport Model, Dominick Velez

Theses

Managing thermal energy generation and heat transfer within nanoscale devices (transistors) of modern-day electronics is important as it limits speed, carrier mobility, and affects device reliability. In the nanoscale, heat conduction occurs primarily via phonon transport and heat generation is a result of electron-phonon interactions in these devices. Traditional methods of predicting physical behavior have proven to lack either physical accuracy, computational efficiency, or flexibility. The Nanoscale Energy Transport Model (NETM) is an engineering design tool introduced to calculate non-equilibrium transport of energy carriers in nanoscale devices and overcome the deficiencies of traditional models of energy-carrier transport The NETM previously …

Exploring The Development Of Self-Concept Through Self-Portraits In Children With Significant Psychosocial And Emotional Needs, Kelsey Werner May 2024

Exploring The Development Of Self-Concept Through Self-Portraits In Children With Significant Psychosocial And Emotional Needs, Kelsey Werner

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

An individual’s self-concept is under significant development during childhood and adolescents. For children with significant psychosocial and emotional needs their environment, peer group, and accommodations can have a significant impact on the emotional development of their self-concept. Establishing a sense of belonging within relationships is a crucial part of the human experience. A negative self-concept can create barriers to children engaging positively with their peers, family, and community, which diminishes the opportunity for a felt sense of belonging. This capstone thesis is an attempt to develop an art therapy method informed by the expressive therapies continuum (ETC) to support the …

Actuarial Prediction Of Adhd Using Neuropsychological Data, Kimberlyn Williams May 2024

Actuarial Prediction Of Adhd Using Neuropsychological Data, Kimberlyn Williams

Honors Theses

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common psychiatric diagnosis in children and a frequent psychiatric diagnosis in adults. ADHD is a clinical diagnosis based on self-reported symptoms which makes accurate diagnosis challenging. Actuarial prediction has been demonstrated to be more accurate than clinical judgment. The current study explored an actuarial approach to predicting ADHD based on a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests. This project utilized test data from Meyers Neuropsychological Battery (MNB) to develop a logistic regression model to accurately predict diagnosed ADHD cases (n=65) from normal functioning cases (n=79) with a history of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). Binary …

Interstate Rejuvenate, Brennan Taylor May 2024

Interstate Rejuvenate, Brennan Taylor

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Throughout the history of the automobile, roadside amenities and architecture have continually adapted to the needs and desires of motorists. Along the rural interstate highway, landscapes blend with billboards and off-ramps that bring the traveler to food, lodging, and gas. A typical interstate exit is a sprawl of structures for transaction, each isolated in its own asphalt island, competing for the consumer’s attention with signage, architectural design, or folly. These predictable prototypes spread homogenous program and form across the highway with little to no account for a sense of place. When a state border is crossed, a flat, metal sign …

Visualizing Victory: The Role Of Imagery In Empowering Athletes Battling Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Sydney Raboin May 2024

Visualizing Victory: The Role Of Imagery In Empowering Athletes Battling Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Sydney Raboin

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Student Publications

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most common mental health disorders that can make activities of daily life more challenging, as well as adversely impact wellbeing. OCD is an anxiety disorder that presents as uncontrollable and unsolicited thoughts, mental images, and sensations, followed by obsession over them and an irresistible need to complete compulsive behaviors in attempt to challenge them and find relief. It causes fear of both one’s own thoughts and the world around them. OCD shows its place in the athletic realm where it can impact an athlete’s mentality, attention, behaviors, and goal orientation, which may potentially …

Preferences, Risk Neutrality And Risk-Sensitive Mdps, James Alexander, Matthew J. Sobel May 2024

Preferences, Risk Neutrality And Risk-Sensitive Mdps, James Alexander, Matthew J. Sobel

Faculty Scholarship

A binary preference relation on a real vector space satisfying four (natural) axioms is shown to induce a utility function composed of a linear function to the reals and a weakly monotonic function. The key axiom is decomposition, and the utility function can be taken to be linear if and only if this axiom’s converse is also satisfied. Important consequences follow for risk-sensitive discounted Markov decision processes, decision trees, and the discounted utility model in economics. Since the four axioms imply that preferences correspond to discounting, the four axioms without the converse imply that preferences are consistent with discounting without …

How Adaptive Preference Shapes Education Decisions In The Hatch Valley, Jonah Madrid May 2024

How Adaptive Preference Shapes Education Decisions In The Hatch Valley, Jonah Madrid

The Agora

In this project, I will present a case study that demonstrates citizens of the Hatch Valley are facing a form of structural injustice. This injustice is rooted in the circumstances of their socio- economic condition affecting the preferences these citizens have on education. I would like to present my qualitative research on the matter as an individual who grew up and attended public school in this community. I will also be facilitating dialogues with other members of the community to create a culturally appropriate definition of flourishing. The intentions with this study are to identify a problem in the community, …

Importancia De La Sensibilidad Cultural Y Lingüística A La Identidad Autista En Clases Convencionales / Importance Of Cultural And Linguistic Sensitivity To Autistic Identity In Mainstream Classrooms, Thelma M. Solis May 2024

Importancia De La Sensibilidad Cultural Y Lingüística A La Identidad Autista En Clases Convencionales / Importance Of Cultural And Linguistic Sensitivity To Autistic Identity In Mainstream Classrooms, Thelma M. Solis

The Agora

Queen Of The Night, Kayla Blundell

The Agora

“Queen of the Night” was a self-directed project in my Intermediate Sculpture class taught by Professor Carissa Samaniego at New Mexico State University. The criteria I had was to address the contemporary issues of authorship, which I chose to address by including my husband as a resource. He helped me fulfill my vision for the project as I was not physically capable of doing some of the techniques without his help due to the lack of machinery available to me. He also helped with the electrical components since he is good at electrical schematics, and I am unfamiliar with electrical …
