Strengthening And Supporting The Community Of First-Generation Students Of Color, Manuel Pech May 2024

Strengthening And Supporting The Community Of First-Generation Students Of Color, Manuel Pech

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

First-generation students of color overcome many barriers when attending college by finding institutional resources to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. However, students often feel these resources are scarce at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI). Thus, I created a coaching program focused on community building, academic strategies, and mentorship to connect students to campus resources, improve well-being, and lead to high academic achievement. Peer-to-peer coaches for first-generation students of color often find it challenging to coach students from different backgrounds and ethnicities. This is due to the power or cultural dynamics, gender differences, and fears of the unknown they might encounter when …

From Parkland To Nashville: An Analysis Of Knowledge And Framing Activities In Reddit Discussions Surrounding News Coverage Of Guns In The United States, Corinne Dalelio, Dahlia Boyles, Kyle J. Holody, Wendy Weinhold

Communication, Media, and Culture

This research explores discussions surrounding news stories on r/news after two separate school shooting events in 2018 and 2023 to understand how and when variables related to knowledge exchange and framing emerge in context. These activities were found to be an antecedent to engagement, and exchanges of disagreement resulted in longer chains of discussion. ‘Metaframing’ was found to be linked to media distrust. Users in 2023 were far more ideologically aligned and shared knowledge more frequently, but cited sources less frequently, than in 2018. Implications for impacts of news, disagreement, and content moderation on online civic discourse are offered.

Economic Research On Ethanol Feed-Use Coproducts: A Review, Synthesis, And Path Forward, Elliott James Dennis, Daniel Gertner, Galen E. Erickson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

During the mid-2000s to the early 2010s, the domestic ethanol industry witnessed substantial growth, with ethanol coproducts emerging as vital elements for plant profitability and livestock feeding. Initially serving as supplementary revenue streams, coproducts from ethanol production have evolved into diverse value-added offerings, bolstering revenue streams, and sustaining profit margins. This study reviews existing economic research on ethanol coproducts, detailing methodologies, product focus, and research locations. Initially gathering 972 articles from 9 databases, 110 articles were synthesized. We find that most studies primarily examined the growth and future of the ethanol industry with a limited focus on specific coproducts. Feed-use …

Seasonal Phenology And Starch Allocation Patterns In Populations Of Oxycaryum Cubense F. Cubense And Paraguayense In Mississippi, Louisiana, And Florida, Allison C. Squires, Ryan M. Wersal, Gray Turnage, Christopher R. Mudge, Benjamin P. Sperry

Biological Sciences Department Publications

Phenological studies for Cuban bulrush [Oxycaryum cubense (Poepp. & Kunth) Lye] have been limited to the monocephalous form in Lake Columbus (Mississippi). Accordingly, there is little available information on potential phenological differences among O. cubense forms (monocephalous vs. polycephalous) and populations in other geographic locations in the United States. Therefore, seasonal patterns of biomass and starch allocation in O. cubense were quantified from two populations in Lake Columbus on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in Mississippi (monocephalous), two populations from Lake Martin in Louisiana (polycephalous), and two populations from Orange Lake in Florida (polycephalous). Monthly samples of O. cubense inflorescence, emergent, and …

Intimacy Following Cerebral Vascular Accident, Hannah Caitlyn Guschel, Sarah Hendrickson May 2024

Intimacy Following Cerebral Vascular Accident, Hannah Caitlyn Guschel, Sarah Hendrickson

Graduate Student Scholarship

In the United States, a cerebral vascular accident (CVA) is a leading cause of death and a significant contributor to severe disabilities for adults (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022a). Two areas of post-stroke deficits and changes that are not frequently addressed in treatments are sexual activity dysfunctions and challenges with intimacy after stroke. Occupational therapy practitioners have the education, training, and practice areas within our framework to address issues relating to sexuality and provide education on the matter. Sexuality should be addressed, like all other activities of daily living, thorough and assiduous. This study was a cross-sectional design …

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

Solar flares are characterized by sudden bursts of electromagnetic radiation from the Sun’s surface, and are caused by the changes in magnetic field states in active solar regions. Earth and its surrounding space environment can suffer from various negative impacts caused by solar flares, ranging from electronic communication disruption to radiation exposure-based health risks to astronauts. In this paper, we address the solar flare prediction problem from magnetic field parameter-based multivariate time series (MVTS) data using multiple state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers that include MINImally RandOm Convolutional KErnel Transform (MiniRocket), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Canonical Interval Forest (CIF), Multiple Representations Sequence …

Understanding The Complexities Of Student Learning Progress In Texas: A Study Of Covid-19 And Rural Vs. Non-Rural Districts, Shifang Tang, Zhuoying Wang, Lei Zhang, David Jimenez

Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigate the impact of COVID-19 on academic achievement in Texas public schools. Demographic and Grade 5 STAAR test data were collected from 1155 public school districts for 2018–2019 and 2020–2021. Multiple regression was adopted to analyze the differences between rural and non-rural districts, as well as the impact of demographic characteristics on students’ achievement. The results reveal significant differences in demographic characteristics between the two academic years, with non-rural districts exhibiting a greater decline in academic achievement than rural districts. Additionally, the findings suggest that higher teacher salaries correlate with better academic performance across various subjects …

Some Outcomes Of Civic And Citizenship Education Education In Australian Schools: A Paper Prepared For The Joint Standing Committee On Electoral Matters Of The House Of Representatives, John Ainley, Julian Fraillon, Tim Friedman, Rachel Parker

Shaping educational policy

This paper submitted to the 2024 Committee on Electoral Matters of the House of Representatives provides an overview of evidence from large-scale assessment studies concerning civics and citizenship outcomes of students in Australian schools. Those outcomes include students’ knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship, their values and attitudes toward civics and citizenship processes and issues, and their behavioural intentions regarding future participation in civic and citizenship activities. The paper draws on the published reports from the National Assessment Program - Civics and Citizenship (NAP - CC) which have been conducted in Australia on a triennial basis since 2004, and …

Nearly One-Third Of Granite Staters Expect To Be Worse Off In A Year; Cost Of Living And Inflation Cited As Reasons 5/24/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

A plurality of Granite Staters think they are worse off financially than they were a year ago and almost one-third expect to be worse off a year from now. The most frequently cited reasons are inflation or the cost of living. Republicans and Independents are considerably more likely than Democrats to be pessimistic about their personal finances. State residents are also pessimistic about the short and long-term macroeconomic outlook of the country at large but are somewhat more optimistic in their expectations for the New Hampshire economy.

Analysis Of The Inflection Points Of Height-Diameter Models, Tzeng Yih Lam, Mark J. Ducey

Faculty Publications

The inflection point is an important feature of sigmoidal height-diameter (H-D) models. It is often cited as one of the properties favoring sigmoidal model forms. However, there are very few studies analyzing the inflection points of H-D models. The goals of this study were to theoretically and empirically examine the behaviors of inflection points of six common H-D models with a regional dataset. The six models were the Wykoff (WYK), Schumacher (SCH), Curtis (CUR), Hossfeld IV (HOS), von Bertalanffy-Richards (VBR), and Gompertz (GPZ) models. The models were first fitted in their base forms with tree species as random effects and …

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Most Massachusetts residents say that they are doing about the same financially as a year ago and anticipate similar finances a year from now, but more say they are worse off than say they are better off. Those who anticipate being worse off most often cite the cost of living as a reason. Bay Staters are largely ambivalent in their feelings about the short-term health of the Massachusetts and national economies.

Witnessing Eyewitness Coercion And Familiarity Affects Defense Attorneys’ Evaluations Of Trial Prospects, Jason Carty May 2024

Witnessing Eyewitness Coercion And Familiarity Affects Defense Attorneys’ Evaluations Of Trial Prospects, Jason Carty

Student Theses

Abstract

The current study is designed to determine whether two case factors affect criminal defense attorneys’ plea decision-making: witness coercion and witness familiarity with the defendant. A sample of 133 criminal defense attorneys (123 after attention checks) reviewed a mock case vignette and a witness interview which varies on two dimensions: coerciveness (coercive, non-coercive) and witness relationship to the defendant (friend, stranger). Attorneys reported their impressions of the case and indicated their recommended minimum and maximum length of negotiated plea agreements, how likely their client was to be convicted at trial, how coercive they thought the mock interview was, and …
