The Feeling Of Being On The Stage: Arab College Students' Oral Presentation Performance And Anxiety: A Mixed Method Study, Moza Juma Al Kaabi May 2024

The Feeling Of Being On The Stage: Arab College Students' Oral Presentation Performance And Anxiety: A Mixed Method Study, Moza Juma Al Kaabi

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

This study explored Arab college students' oral presentation performance and anxiety using a convergent mixed-method design. The study used three data sets; in the first data set, the college students (n=265) completed an Oral Presentation and Anxiety Survey (OPAS); and the second data set featured a semi-structured interview with a subset sample (n=11), followed by an observation protocol with the interviewees (n=11) for the third data set. The quantitative findings revealed that technological aids significantly affected the levels of Language Anxiety experienced during Oral Presentations. The mean scores showed that females perceived more technical support than males. Additionally, a difference …

Hemoadsorption With Cytosorb As Part Of A Strategy To Improve Outcomes In Patients On Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, Ruzica Mrkonjic May 2024

Hemoadsorption With Cytosorb As Part Of A Strategy To Improve Outcomes In Patients On Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, Ruzica Mrkonjic

The VAD Journal

The exposure of a patient’s blood to the non-endothelialized surface of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system results in the production of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. This imbalance in pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines leads to inflammatory response syndrome, which contributes to edema, vasoplegia, and multiple organ failure among other complications. Hemoadsorption therapy, with the use of CytoSorb® (CytoSorbents) has emerged as a well-accepted treatment option that helps control pro-inflammatory response and improve outcomes for patients on ECMO. However, studies have shown that the potential of hemoadsorption is controversial and that it is crucial for clinicians to weigh the pros …

Orphans Of The Orissa Famine: Capital, Charity, And Coercion In The Missionary System, Sarah Mende May 2024

Orphans Of The Orissa Famine: Capital, Charity, And Coercion In The Missionary System, Sarah Mende

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Some of the most profound effects Britain imposed on society in Orissa, India came as a result of the missions that formed the majority of the protective infrastructure during the Orissa famine. Shortly after the British began their occupation of Orissa, a network of Protestant Christian missions based in England began to move into the region. Leadership came from the Christian Missionary Society, an Evangelical Anglican group, as well as Baptist figures such as Rev. J. Buckley. Their move was difficult, and for many years unsuccessful. However, the British East India Company and the Raj that followed it would pave …

Context Aware Music Recommendation And Playlist Generation, Elias Mann May 2024

Context Aware Music Recommendation And Playlist Generation, Elias Mann

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

There are many reasons people listen to music, and the type of music is largely determined by what the listener may be doing while they listen. For example, one may listen to one type of music while commuting, another while exercising, and yet another while relaxing. Without access to the physiological state of the user, current music recommendation methods rely on collaborative filtering - recommending music based on what other similar users listen to - and content based filtering - recommending songs based on their similarities to songs the user already prefers. With the rise in popularity of smart devices …

Book Review: Organizing Women: Home, Work, And The Institutional Infrastructure Of Print In Twentieth-Century America, Christine Pawley, Madelaine Russell

School of Information Student Research Journal

In carefully selected case studies of white and Black middle-class American women, Pawley, a professor emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Information School, provides a detailed exploration of the “largely untold history” of women who used their involvement in print-centered organizations to reshape their lives beyond the unpaid domestic sphere (1). The first three chapters of the book trace the histories of primarily domestic women who held active roles in institutions of print culture such as journalism and radio broadcasting while the last three focus on the lives of women whose full-time employment helped to shape the developing public library …

Ai In Academia: Policy Development, Ethics, And Curriculum Design, Odin Halvorson

School of Information Student Research Journal

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a pivotal force in modern society, significantly impacting various sectors, including academia. This paper examines the broad implications of AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), and their transformative potential across educational institutions. The San Jose State University's iSchool is highlighted as a case study, demonstrating its proactive approach to integrating nascent technologies and revising curriculum competencies to address AI's influence. As AI reshapes library and information science (LIS) education, the development of new competencies, such as data privacy and ethical AI use, becomes essential. Furthermore, the ethical and societal implications of AI, including potential …

Spirituality And The Development Of An Organizational Compliance And Ethics Program, Michael A. Meyer May 2024

Spirituality And The Development Of An Organizational Compliance And Ethics Program, Michael A. Meyer

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Major corporate scandals and heightened government enforcement of ethical lapses in the workplace continue to emphasize the importance of an effective compliance and ethics program. Compliance and ethics programs effectively became mandatory when the United States Federal Sentencing Commission amended the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations in 2004 to recognize the existence of an effective compliance and ethics program as a mitigating consideration in the sentencing of organizations convicted of criminal conduct. While legalistic codes, policies, and procedures have become the normative response to the Sentencing Guidelines, soul-less documents in and of themselves will not develop the “thoughtful behavior” upon …

Foresight: Trusting And Using The Information From Data Analytics To Support Decision-Making In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Marcus O’Mahony, Paul Bassett, Alan Kavanagh, Anthony Maguire, Aoife Corrigan, Barry Malone, Michael Walshe, Siobhán Griffin, Thomas Coleman, Margot Holland, Kate Courtney, Carl Rafferty, Anne Greene, Damon Warnock

Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science

Background: Data is not information. Information is actionable. Data, alone, is not. This distinction has significant risk management consequences when using data to support decision-making in the highly regulated pharma and biopharma manufacturing sector. A new framework is proposed to support the trustworthy use of the information generated from data, by data analytics, for effective risk-based decision-making. The emergence of a standardised approach for using such information is essential to avoid duplication and divergence of efforts across the sector. Ensuring that any proposed approach aligns with regulatory expectations for the sector is also essential.

Methods: Through an industry-academic collaboration, over …

Using Wireless Signal To Determine Display Position, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

One of the most significant customer pain points in the docking experience is identifying and maintaining display position. Today, there are solutions being worked to manually set and remember display positioning, but these solutions require manual setting. This solution proposes using wireless distribution from the notebook to determine reflections of the display to determine relative display position to the docked notebook.

Rela&Onship Between The Height Of Graphene And Its Adhesion Value, Tyler Larson May 2024

Rela&Onship Between The Height Of Graphene And Its Adhesion Value, Tyler Larson

Senior Theses

Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, have remarkable proper&es. As one of the thinnest, strongest, and most conduc&ve materials known to humanity, graphene holds promise for revolu&onizing numerous technological applica&ons. These applica&ons all require different numbers of layers of graphene. However, with graphene being so thin it is difficult to quickly determine how many layers there are. By using an adhesion value and a height value of graphene one may be able to iden&fy the number of layers more accurately.
