The extent to which evolution is repeatable remains debated. Here, we study changes over time in the frequency of cryptic color-pattern morphs in 10 replicate long-term field studies of a stick insect, each spanning at least a decade (across 30 years of total data). We find predictable “up-and-down” fluctuations in stripe frequency in all populations, representing repeatable evolutionary dynamics based on standing genetic variation. A field experiment demonstrates that these fluctuations involve negative frequency-dependent natural selection (NFDS). These fluctuations rely on demographic and selective variability that pushes populations away from equilibrium, such that they can reliably move back toward it …

Uprooted, Displaced, Resilient: Kosovar Women’S Narratives Of Organizing For Survival During The Kosovo War, Erjona Gashi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to foreground Kosovar women’s narratives and organizing properties during the Kosovo War. I examine the overlooked gendered roles and day-to-day lived experiences of Kosovar women, survivors of the Serb genocide, political violence, and oppression, and investigate their organizing properties during the Kosovo War (1998-1999). In acknowledging women’s plurality of experiences and perspectives, I challenge the currently pervasive and monolithic narrative of women as passive victims of war present in scholarship in organizational communication and instead make overt the narrative of women as critical organizational actors that sustain lives during and after the war. Using …

Sous-vide cooking is a growing trend among retailers and consumers. Foodborne pathogens may survive the cooking if nonvalidated parameters are used or if pathogens have enhanced thermal resistance. Pathogen inactivation from sous-vide cooking was determined when introduced directly to beef products or via contaminated spices, and with or without a finishing step. Beef products (ground beef, tenderized, and nontenderized steaks) were inoculated with pathogens (Salmonella Montevideo and Escherichia coli O157:NM) in three ways: 1) directly onto the meat 2) ground black pepper incorporated into the recipe 3) ground pepper equilibrated at 30% RH (4 d) prior to incorporation. Beef …

How Do Demographic Characteristics Of Homeschooling Households Influence The Way Homeschooling Is Practiced?, Albert Cheng, Angela Watson May 2024

How Do Demographic Characteristics Of Homeschooling Households Influence The Way Homeschooling Is Practiced?, Albert Cheng, Angela Watson

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

The legitimization of homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of new schooling models (i.e., hybrid homeschooling) potentially change the composition of homeschooling families and the way homeschooling is practiced. This study establishes pre-pandemic trends of the demographic composition of U.S. households who homeschool their children. This study also articulates a theory that the way families practice homeschooling is based on practical constraints imposed by household demographic characteristics and, to a lesser extent ideological reasons. These theories are empirically tested using the 2012, 2016, and 2019 waves of the National Household Education Survey and a sample of 1,468 homeschooling …

Performance Of Co2-Cured Alkali-Activated Blast-Furnace Slag Incorporating Magnesium Oxide, Yubin Jun, Seong Ho Han, Jae Hong Kim

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigated characteristics of alkali-activated slags incorporating magnesium oxide (MgO) subjected to CO2 curing. The samples were prepared by adding 2%, 5%, and 10% MgO to the total binder mass. The mixture was activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and cured in a CO2 incubator for 3 days. The compressive strength of the MgO-incorporated CO2-cured alkali-activated slag was higher than that of the conventional alkali-activated slag at all ages up to 28 days. No reduction in the strength was observed over time. The enhanced strength was independent of MgO content. Combined X-ray diffraction with thermogravimetric analysis …

Effect Of Genomic And Cellular Environments On Gene Expression Noise, Clarice K Y Hong, Avinash Ramu, Siqi Zhao, Barak A Cohen

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Individual cells from isogenic populations often display large cell-to-cell differences in gene expression. This "noise" in expression derives from several sources, including the genomic and cellular environment in which a gene resides. Large-scale maps of genomic environments have revealed the effects of epigenetic modifications and transcription factor occupancy on mean expression levels, but leveraging such maps to explain expression noise will require new methods to assay how expression noise changes at locations across the genome.

RESULTS: To address this gap, we present Single-cell Analysis of Reporter Gene Expression Noise and Transcriptome (SARGENT), a method that simultaneously measures the noisiness …

We report the discovery of X-ray polarization from the X-ray-bright filament G0.13−0.11 in the Galactic center (GC) region. This filament features a bright, hard X-ray source that is most plausibly a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and an extended and structured diffuse component. Combining the polarization signal from IXPE with the imaging/spectroscopic data from Chandra, we find that X-ray emission of G0.13−0.11 is highly polarized PD = 57(±18)% in the 3−6 keV band, while the polarization angle is PA = 21 ° ( ± 9 ° ). This high degree of polarization proves the synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission from …

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura

Articles

Building upon recent studies in new materialisms and feminist critical posthumanism with a focus on human and more-than-human relationships, this paper examines how the posthuman paradigm, by postulating the queering of identit(ies) via entanglement with the more-than-human (including technology), and by offering a critical examination of diverse modes of existence within a broader ecological context, can foster more inclusive and ethically sound ways of being in the world. Although posthumanism encompasses a wide range of perspectives and theories, including transhumanism, at its core, it challenges traditional notions of humanism, blurring the boundaries between what is human and what is more-than-human, …

Normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) inherently accumulate somatic mutations and lose clonal diversity with age, processes implicated in the development of myeloid malignancies 1 . The impact of exogenous stressors, such as cancer chemotherapies, on the genomic integrity and clonal dynamics of normal HSPCs is not well defined. We conducted whole-genome sequencing on 1,032 single-cell-derived HSPC colonies from 10 patients with multiple myeloma (MM), who had undergone various chemotherapy regimens. Our findings reveal that melphalan treatment distinctly increases mutational burden with a unique mutation signature, whereas other MM chemotherapies do not significantly affect the normal mutation rate of …

Protected areas are widely considered an essential strategy for biodiversity conservation. Dictyostelids are unique protists known to have important ecological functions in promoting soil and plant health through their top-down regulation of ecosystem processes, such as decomposition, that involve bacterial populations. But the relationship between dictyostelid diversity within protected areas remains poorly understood, especially on a large scale. Herein, we report data on the distribution of dictyostelids, identified with ITS + SSU rRNA molecular and morphology-based taxonomy, from soil samples collected in the Fanjing Mountain protected area of Guizhou Province, Southwest China. We compared the biodiversity data of dictyostelids in …

Human-Machine Interactions For Behavioral Health Care, Zhiwei Yu May 2024

Human-Machine Interactions For Behavioral Health Care, Zhiwei Yu

Theses

About one in four American adults (26%) and 20.3% of children aged 8 to 16 years reported behavioral health concerns in 2023. However, a substantial gap remains between demand for behavioral healthcare services and access to such services. In response, research efforts have been made to advance effective and accessible approaches to provide assessments and treatments for populations with behavioral health needs. Yet, two primary challenges exist in current practice and research: 1) self-reports and manual observation-based assessments are subjective and labor-intensive, as evaluations are limited to the availability of clinical professionals; 2) they only target the general experiences but …

Some firms and marketers of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes; a type of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS)) and refill liquids (e-liquids) have made claims about the safety of ingredients used in their products based on the term "GRAS or Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS). However, GRAS is a provision within the definition of a food additive under section 201(s) (21 U.S.C. 321(s)) of the U.S. Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). Food additives and GRAS substances are by the FD&C Act definition intended for use in food, thus safety is based on oral consumption; the term GRAS cannot serve …

Valid Confidence Intervals For Μ,Σ When There Is Only One Observation Available, Anirban Dasgupta, Stephen Portnoy

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Portnoy (2019) considered the problem of constructing an optimal confidence interval for the mean based on a single observation X ∼ N(µ, σ2). Here we extend this result to obtaining 1-sample confidence intervals for σ and to cases of symmetric unimodal distributions and of distributions with compact support. Finally, we extend the multivariate result in Portnoy (2019) to allow a sample of size m from a multivariate normal distribution where m may be less than the dimension.

The Lewis Acidity Of Imidazole-Derived Diaryliodonium Zwitterions, Cyrus Rose May 2024

The Lewis Acidity Of Imidazole-Derived Diaryliodonium Zwitterions, Cyrus Rose

University Honors Theses

Diaryliodonium salts can be used as effective aryl-transfer agents in reactions to form novel molecules with diverse applications including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals without using harsh reaction conditions and transition metal reagents. In recent years, interest in the applications of the Lewis acidity of iodonium ion catalysts has increased. Despite this, the quantification of the Lewis acidities of diaryliodonium salts are scarce. Even rarer, there has not been much study into the Lewis acidities of zwitterionic diaryliodonium salts. For zwitterions, there is no counter anion that would come into consideration in regard to its Lewis acidity. To expand the understanding of …

Zombies From Cultural Origin To Contemporary Uses, Conor Davenport

University Honors Theses

This piece explores the evolution of the Western cinematic zombie, from its spawning to its reappropriation and echoes that are seen throughout the current landscapes of cinema today. It presents the axiom of the genre with White Zombie (1932) and how it has evolved into the contemporary creature we know and love today. The paper examines a throughline from cultural origin and how this has developed and becomes a critical lens for widely spread bureaucratic systems currently in place.

Multi-Scale Variability Of Heavy Metals In A Snowpack In The Triple Divide Region Of The Western United States, Kelsey Hefner May 2024

Multi-Scale Variability Of Heavy Metals In A Snowpack In The Triple Divide Region Of The Western United States, Kelsey Hefner

University Honors Theses

Natural and anthropogenically sourced particulates are deposited from the atmosphere to landscapes via dry and wet deposition, making frozen winter snowpack a natural archive of atmospheric elemental composition. In the Western United States, wildfires are increasing in extent, duration, and severity. Severe fires remove forest canopy, impacting how atmospheric elements are dispersed and stored across snow-dominated watersheds. We evaluated concentrations of twelve elements in 397 winter snow core samples from a chronosequence of eight forests that burned with mixed severity from 2000 to 2018 in the Triple Divide region of Western Wyoming, the headwaters of the Columbia, Colorado, and Missouri …

The urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) is a unique protease binding receptor, now recognized as a key regulator of inflammation. Initially, uPA/uPAR was considered thrombolytic (clot-dissolving); however, recent studies have demonstrated its predominant immunomodulatory functions in inflammation and cancer. The uPA/uPAR complex has a multifaceted central role in both normal physiological and also pathological responses. uPAR is expressed as a glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked receptor interacting with vitronectin, integrins, G protein-coupled receptors, and growth factor receptors within a large lipid raft. Through protein-to-protein interactions, cell surface uPAR modulates intracellular signaling, altering cellular adhesion and migration. The uPA/uPAR also modifies extracellular activity, activating …

New Avenues For Public Value Management And The Role Of Nonprofit Policy Innovation Labs: Co-Experience And Social Media, Adam Wellstead, Rowen Schmidt, Angie Carter, Anat Gofen

Michigan Tech Publications

The past decade has witnessed the global rise of policy innovation labs (PILs), many of which are nonprofit organizations. Policymakers have promoted PILs as a novel approach to addressing press-ing economic and social issues. Concurrent with the growing importance of PILs has been the shift to public value management (PVM), which focuses on policy outcomes that benefit the public and the needs and problems in society. One relatively new process raised in the public management literature is co-experience, which considers stakeholders' engagement with public policies or pro-grams within the broader context of life experience. This, the authors argue, is an …
