What American Policymakers Misunderstand About The Belt And Road Initiative, Zenel Garcia, Phillip Guerreiro
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
American accounts of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) contend that it is a coherent grand strategy that reflects Beijing’s geopolitical ambitions. These accounts ignore the BRI’s fragmented nature, whereby Chinese provinces have been pivotal actors in its development and implementation. Furthermore, these accounts disregard the agency of participant countries and their capacity to shape the BRI. This article illustrates this fragmentation and agency by studying the Yunnan province and its domestic and international neighbors. It contends that these dynamics indicate that the BRI lacks coherence and that Beijing’s capacity to extract geopolitical benefits will remain limited.

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Local treatment options for locally recurrent pancreatic adenocarcinoma (LR-PAC) are limited, with median survival time (MST) of 9-13 months (mos) following recurrence. MRI-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (MRgSBRT) provides the ability to dose escalate while sparing normal tissue. Here we report on the early outcomes of MRgSBRT for LR-PAC.
METHODS: Patients with prior resection of pancreatic adenocarcinoma with local recurrence treated with MRgSBRT at a single tertiary referral center from 5-2021 to 2-2023 were identified from our prospective database. MRgSBRT was delivered to 40-50 Gy in 4-5 fractions with target and OAR delineation per institutional standards. Endpoints included local …
Emotional Regulation On Modulating Associations Between Depression And Physical Activity As Characterized Via Deep Learning, Franklin Ye Ruan
Emotional Regulation On Modulating Associations Between Depression And Physical Activity As Characterized Via Deep Learning, Franklin Ye Ruan
Computer Science Senior Theses
Emotional regulation and physical activity are known to be associated with depression; however, a deeper understanding of how emotional regulation may strengthen or weaken the bonds between depressive symptoms and physical activity may aid clinicians and researchers in developing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for those adversely affected by depression. As part of the Tracking Depression Study, this analysis uses data collected from 306 participants diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. To study their behavior, we analyze actigraphy data, or longitudinal physical activity intensity data, as it relates to depression severity, quantified by the daily PHQ-9 questionnaires. We study these associations through …

Data-Driven Computing Methods For Nonlinear Physics Systems With Geometric Constraints, Yunjin Tong
Computer Science Senior Theses
In a landscape where scientific discovery is increasingly driven by data, the integration of machine learning (ML) with traditional scientific methodologies has emerged as a transformative approach. This paper introduces a novel, data-driven framework that synergizes physics-based priors with advanced ML techniques to address the computational and practical limitations inherent in first-principle-based methods and brute-force machine learning methods. Our framework showcases four algorithms, each embedding a specific physics-based prior tailored to a particular class of nonlinear systems, including separable and nonseparable Hamiltonian systems, hyperbolic partial differential equations, and incompressible fluid dynamics. The intrinsic incorporation of physical laws preserves the system's …
Socioeconomic Factors Influencing Hematological Health In Latin America, Lina M. Barrios, Ms
Socioeconomic Factors Influencing Hematological Health In Latin America, Lina M. Barrios, Ms
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Hematological malignancies, also known as blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphomas, and myelomas, are a significant health concern globally. The incidence of these malignancies has dramatically increased over time, leukemias being the leading cause. The incidence of blood cancers in Latin America exhibits regional variability, with leukemia being the emerging cause as the most prevalent type in children and young adults. However, the overall incidences are oddly lower than in developed countries, potentially due to the underreporting of the cases and the lack of cancer registries. This situation implies a critical need for improving surveillance and data collection methods to …

A Quantitative Study Examining The Mental Health Needs Of African American Students Compared To Their Counterparts In Higher Education, Luxury Bryant
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
African American students are entering into higher education institutions at higher rates. This population has specific needs and faces various challenges entering college at predominantly white institutions compared to their counterparts of different races. While college is already a stressful time with academic pressures as well as navigating a new setting, African American students also face unique experiences that can impact their mental health. It has been found that African American students are less likely to seek out mental health services especially those that are attending predominantly White institutions (Anderson, 2018). This study will highlight African American undergraduate students' perceptions …
Novel Role And Mechanisms Of Brd4 In Mediating Mesothelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Pleural Fibrosis, Felix Kankam
Novel Role And Mechanisms Of Brd4 In Mediating Mesothelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Pleural Fibrosis, Felix Kankam
Biotechnology Theses
Pleural fibrosis is characterized by myofibroblast accumulation and increased expression of collagen and other extracellular matrices due to injury to the pleura and remodeling. Mesothelial to mesenchymal transition (MesoMT) is an important pathological event that contributes to the pool of myofibroblasts although its regulation remains incompletely understood. Recent research has reported the role of BRD4, a member of the bromodomain extra terminal domain (BET) family, in developing fibrosis in the heart and the lungs. One recent study showed that MEOX1 is a downstream target of BRD4 and mediated cardiac fibroblast activation. Our joint work also demonstrated that NOX4 is implicated …

A Rabbit Model Of Voice Function Changes Caused By The Administration And Subsequent Withdrawal Of Asthma Inhalers, Savannah Forbes Bullock
Theses and Dissertations
Combination inhaled corticosteroids (ICs) are the primary treatment prescribed for patients with asthma; however, voice problems are also associated with ICs. In this study, 32 rabbits were assigned randomly to one of five experimental groups: baseline, induction, induction control, reversibility, and reversibility control. The baseline group received no treatment and larynges were obtained following quarantine. Rabbits belonging to experimental groups received IC treatment twice a day until trained raters noted visible vocal fold changes during endoscopy, which was performed every 2 weeks. When changes were observed, animals were euthanized, and the larynges were harvested from the experimental induction group and …

Whisper: Proximity-Based Authentication For Securely Sharing Secrets, Charles A. Vogel
Computer Science Senior Theses
Cryptography offers a wide arsenal of encryption methods to enable secure communication between two
devices that have already exchanged a shared secret. Existing techniques for exchanging a shared secret,
however, are often vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks, require special hardware for out-of-band com-
munications, or require a pre-existing Internet connection. With the constantly increasing prevalence of
Internet of Things (IoT) devices sharing sensitive information via wireless networks, the need for a method
to establish secure communication is more pressing than ever.
With this context, we present Whisper, a novel technique that combines elements of digital commu-
nication theory, cryptography, and probability …

Excerpt:
'Fires in cities are more common than we think. We see these massive fires that claim several lives as few and far between. The gruesome cases in Rajkot and Delhi recently, following one after the other, are a wake-up call for anyone invested in the question of the future of our cities. The news always has a way of weighing the gravity of such events against the number of people who lost their lives. In these two fires, the shock value also comes from the fact that children and infants lost their lives. But there is more to these …

Purpose
Community health needs assessments are required for most state and local public health agencies and non-profit hospitals. Typically based on community health improvement planning models, these assessments encompass overall com- munity health and multiple diseases to inform program planning. National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Centers and community-based cancer-focused programs share the goal of reducing cancer burden in the catchment areas they serve. However, to date, no published models exist to guide cancer-specific needs assessments for a determined geographic area that can inform both public health and research initiatives. The purpose of this article is to outline a cancer needs …
On The Alignment Of Consumer Surplus And Total Surplus Under Competitive Price Discrimination, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris
On The Alignment Of Consumer Surplus And Total Surplus Under Competitive Price Discrimination, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Producers of heterogeneous goods with heterogeneous costs compete in prices. When producers know their own production costs and the consumer knows their values, consumer surplus and total surplus are aligned: the information structure and equilibrium that maximize consumer surplus also maximize total surplus. We report when alignment extends to the case where either the consumer is uncertain about their own values or producers are uncertain about their own costs, and we also give examples showing when it does not. Less information for either producers or consumer may intensify competition in a way that benefits the consumer but results in inefficient …
Measurement Of Simplified Template Cross Sections Of The Higgs Boson Produced In Association With W Or Z Bosons In The H → B[] Decay Channel In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S =13 Tev, A. Tumasyan
Kenneth Bloom Publications
Differential cross sections are measured for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with vector bosons (W, Z) and decaying to a pair of b quarks. Measurements are performed within the framework of the simplified template cross sections. The analysis relies on the leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, resulting in final states with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons. The Higgs boson candidates are either reconstructed from pairs of resolved b-tagged jets, or from single large-radius jets containing the particles arising from two b quarks. Proton-proton collision data at √s = …

Dietary fiber supplements are a strategy to close the ‘fiber gap’ and induce targeted modulations of the gut microbiota. However, higher doses of fiber supplements cause gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms that differ among individuals. What determines these inter-individual differences is insufficiently understood. Here we analyzed findings from a six-week randomized controlled trial that evaluated GI symptoms to corn bran arabinoxylan (AX; n = 15) relative to non-fermentable microcrystalline cellulose (MCC; n = 16) at efficacious supplement doses of 25 g/day (females) or 35 g/day (males) in adults with excess weight. Self-reported flatulence, bloating, and stomach aches were evaluated weekly. Bacterial taxa …

Thrombosis, a key factor in most cardiovascular diseases, is a major contributor to human mortality. Existing antithrombotic agents carry a risk of bleeding. Consequently, there is a keen interest in discovering innovative antithrombotic agents that can prevent thrombosis without negatively impacting hemostasis. Platelets play crucial roles in both hemostasis and thrombosis. We have previously characterized calcium- and integrin-binding protein 1 (CIB1) as a key regulatory molecule that regulates platelet function. CIB1 interacts with several platelet proteins including integrin αIIbβ3, the major glycoprotein receptor for fibrinogen on platelets. Given that CIB1 regulates platelet function through its interaction with αIIbβ3, we developed …

Professional Discourse Is Shaping The Force, Brennan Deveraux
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The Army is transforming. While today’s senior leaders have set the service on a modernization path, future problems belong to the next generation—and we must own them. Professional writing is a way to do so, a tool enabling leaders of any rank to influence change at the macro level by contributing meaningfully to Department of Defense (DoD) conversations. Those embarking on this challenging adventure are not alone; writing is a team sport. The journey is as important as the destination, and most who take up this charge find participation in professional dialogue highly rewarding.

Iraq’S Ministry Of Interior: Nato, Capability Building, And Reform, Andrea Malouf
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The ongoing, 20-year effort to reform Iraq’s Ministry of Interior through capability building is an underreported but critical aspect of NATO’s mission. This article identifies 10 strategic errors or “lessons” from this mission related to ends, ways, means, and assumptions. NATO’s involvement was flawed from design to delivery, including its myopic focus on training, systemic disregard of politics, relegation of civilian expertise, and inadequate measurements of its effects. As a result, police legitimacy in Iraq eroded, potentially exacerbating instability. Capability building is becoming more attractive as a non-kinetic tool; the success of future NATO missions—in Iraq and elsewhere—will, therefore, rely …
