A Simple Sandwich Electrochemical Immunosensor For Rapid Detection Of The Alzheimer’S Disease Biomarker Tau Protein, Mingzhu Yang, Yihong Chen, Hongyu Sun, Dujuan Li, Yanbin Li
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
As a typical biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease, rapid and specific detection of tau protein can help improve the early diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. In this study, a simple sandwich electrochemical immunosensor was developed for rapid detection of tau protein. Primary monoclonal antibodies (mAb1) against the middle domain of tau protein (amino acids 189–195) were immobilized on the gold electrode surface through a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3,3′-dithiobis (sulfosuccinimidyl propionate) (DTSSP). Then the tau protein was captured through the specific adsorption between the antigen and the antibody, resulting in a change in the impedance. Secondary monoclonal antibodies (mAb2) against …

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare stenoocclusive cerebral vasculopathy often treated by neurosurgical revascularization using extracranial-intracranial bypasses to prevent ischemic or hemorrhagic events. Little is known about the vascular risk profile of adult MMD patients compared to the general population. We therefore analyzed 133 adult MMD patients and compared them with data from more than 22,000 patients from the German Health Update database. Patients with MMD showed an age- and sex-adjusted increased prevalence of arterial hypertension, especially in women between 30 and 44 years and in patients of both sexes between 45 and 64 years. Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed significantly …

A total of 3102 neurons were recorded before and following acute and chronic methylphenidate (MPD) administration. Acute MPD exposure elicits mainly increases in neuronal and behavioral activity in dose–response characteristics. The response to chronic MPD exposure, as compared to acute 0.6, 2.5, or 10.0 mg/kg MPD administration, elicits electrophysiological and behavioral sensitization in some animals and electrophysiological and behavioral tolerance in others when the neuronal recording evaluations were performed based on the animals’ behavioral responses, or amount of locomotor activity, to chronic MPD exposure. The majority of neurons recorded from those expressing behavioral sensitization responded to chronic MPD with further …

Long-Term Post-Fire Succession Of Reptiles In An Urban Remnant In South-Western Australia, Robert A. Davis, Michael D. Craig
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Reptile responses to fire may differ between remnants and contiguous vegetation but this is poorly understood. Aims: We aimed to explore long-term (≤15 years) post-fire responses of reptiles in an urban Banksia woodland remnant. Methods: We trapped reptiles for 10 nights in November and December each year between 2009 and 2023 inclusive (except 2014 and 2019) to estimate relative abundance. We used mixed models to explore differences between unburnt and burnt sites and changes in both over time. Key results and conclusions: The reptile community showed short-term negative responses to fire, but communities had returned to their pre-fire state …

Seventy-Two Words For Potato: Irish Language Sources For Food History, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Dónall Ó Braonáin
Books/Book Chapters
The Irish word for generous is flaithiúil, which stems from the word ‘flaith’ or prince, so in Irish to be generous is to be princely. The Irish for the Department of Justice is An Roinn Dlí agus Cirt—literally, the department of the law and what is right: the Irish language separates the law from what is right or just. The Irish saying ‘Fáílte Uí Cheallaigh’—the welcome of the O’Kellys—carries memories of an exceptional hospitality event that happened seven centuries ago in east Galway/ south Roscommon but is still preserved in today’s speech.10 This chapter seeks to discuss the wealth of …

Back To The Future? Rishi Sunak's Industrial Strategy Save Related Papers Chat With Paper, Richard Woodward, James Silverwood
Articles
Since becoming Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak has been variously described as pursuing a ‘furtive’, ‘surreptitious’ and ‘apologetic’ industrial strategy. Terms such as industrial policy and industrial strategy have been expunged from official speeches and policy documents, yet industrial intervention remains widespread. In adopting this approach, the article argues that Sunak has returned the UK to an industrial policy consensus established under Thatcherism. This consensus places in the foreground pro-market rhetoric and policies suggesting that industrial strategy should be limited to the correction of market failure, while in the background the state actively intervenes to shape the structure of the economy …

Tenant sued landlord for rent overcharges in a rent-stabilized apartment, alleging the landlord fraudulently deregulated the unit. The court denied both parties' summary judgment motions, finding factual issues regarding whether the landlord engaged in a fraudulent scheme to deregulate and whether the tenant can prove the elements of fraud. The court also dismissed certain of the landlord's affirmative defenses and counterclaims.

Efficient And Chemoselective Access To Highly Functionalized Arenes By C-H Deprotonative Generation Of Aryne Intermediates, Bryan Edward Metze
Dissertations and Theses
Arenes are a ubiquitous structural motif occurring in numerous organic pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, secondary metabolites, and functional materials. As such, studies on the characterization, functionalization, and properties of arenes have been a central pillar of organic chemistry since its inception. Early methods to synthesize complex benzenoid rings focused on ring functionalization rather than ring construction due to the high accessibility of very simple arenes and the wide range of aromatic substitution reactions discovered in the late 19th century. As the importance of arenes was recognized more methods of building complex arenes emerged. Both classical and modern approaches are still somewhat limited, …

Automatic Measurement Of Dialogue Engagingness In Multilingual Settings, Amila Ferron
Dissertations and Theses
Expansive use of large language models (LLMs) as dialogue systems brings increased importance to the evaluation of the responses they generate. Although evaluation of qualities such as coherence and fluency are readily possible with well-established automatic metrics, engagingness is often measured with human evaluation -- a process that can be costly and slows the pace of development. Existing automatic metrics for engagingness have low to moderate correlation with human annotations, evaluate the response without the conversation history, are complicated to implement, or are designed for a specific dataset. Moreover, they have been tested exclusively on English conversations. Given that dialogue …
Towards A New Discourse On Success In Alternative Education, Samuel Thomas Settelmeyer
Towards A New Discourse On Success In Alternative Education, Samuel Thomas Settelmeyer
Dissertations and Theses
Although researchers agree that Alternative Education (AE) within the United States is an essential set of schools and programs that do things beyond traditional education, they do not agree on the purpose for these efforts. To understand how researchers can connect between existing perspectives and consider new ways that they can discuss success in the future, I interviewed 16 students and 15 staff from three different AE schools within the same state. Through thematic analysis, I found students and staff to describe success as an amalgamation of individual and common conceptions, requiring individual effort and support, a commitment to daily …

The relationship between cities and wetland cover varies across the globe, with some cities converting wetlands to low‐ and high‐density urban cover and others preserving, conserving, or restoring wetlands, or constructing new ones. However, the scientific literature lacks studies relating changes in systemic flood risk in an urban stormwater management systems to changes in wetland cover. Furthermore, whether and how such relationships are affected by changing storm intensity under climate change is unknown. We present a case study on the effects of changes in urban wetland extent and storm intensity on flooding in an urban drainage system in Valdivia, Chile, …

As modern computing workloads become increasingly data-intensive, the limitations of traditional digital computing hardware, especially in terms of communication bandwidth between memory and processors, are becoming more apparent. Surprisingly, the performance and energy efficiency of the state-of-the-art are not primarily constrained by the computing power of advanced processing architectures but rather by the low communication bandwidth between the memory and the processor. This challenge necessitates a clever re-architecting of digital computing hardware to make the communication between the processor and the memory more energy-efficient, faster, and capable of supporting significantly higher bandwidth. Memory-centric computing emerges as a novel, alternate computing …

In pediatric colorectal surgery, achieving and visualizing adequate perfusion during complex reconstructive procedures are paramount to ensure postoperative success. However, intraoperative identification of proper perfusion remains a challeng. This review synthesizes findings from the literature spanning from January 2010 to March 2024, sourced from Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and other databases, to evaluate the role of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging in enhancing surgical outcomes. Specifically, it explores the use of ICG in surgeries related to Hirschsprung disease, anorectal malformations, cloacal reconstructions, vaginal agenesis, bladder augmentation, and the construction of antegrade continence channels. Preliminary evidence suggests that ICG fluorescence significantly aids in …

Visible-Light Photocatalytic C-H Amination Of Arenes Utilizing Acridine-Lewis Acid Complexes, Matthew R. Lasky, En Chih Liu, Matthew S. Remy, Melanie S. Sanford
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
This report describes the development of a visible-light photocatalytic system for C(sp2)-H amination that leverages in situ-generated photocatalysts. We demonstrate that the combination of acridine derivatives and Lewis acids form potent photooxidants that promote the C-H amination of electronically diverse arenes upon irradiation with visible-light (440 nm). A first-generation photocatalyst composed of Sc (OTf)3 and acridine effects the C-H amination of substrates with oxidation potentials ≤ +2.5 V vs SCE with pyrazole, triazole, and pyridine nucleophiles. Furthermore, the simplicity and modularity of this system enable variation of both Lewis acid and acridine to tune reactivity. This enabled …

Smith, Caroline Burgess, Jenna Beattie, Abby Newdick, Vassilios Tahtis, Bithi Sahu, John F. Golding, Jonathan Marsden, Barry M. Seemungal
School of Health Professions
Background Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) affects approximately half of acute, moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. To date, there have been no rigorous studies of BPPV assessment or treatment in this cohort. We aimed to determine the safety, practicability, and efficacy of therapist-led BPPV management in acute TBI and the feasibility of a larger effectiveness trial. Methods This was a multi-centre, three-arm, parallel-groups, randomised, feasibility trial. Recruitment was via convenience sampling. The main inclusion criteria were age over 18 years and a confirmed, non-penetrating, acute TBI. BPPV-positive patients were randomly allocated to one of three interventions (repositioning manoeuvres, Brandt-Daroff …

Measuring Affect-Related Attention Bias To Emotionally Valenced Visual Stimuli In Horses, Sarah Kappel, Marco A.Ramirez Montes De Oca, Sarah Collins, Katherine Herborn, Michael Mendl, Carole Fureix
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Negative affect appears to mediate animals’ attention to competing emotional stimuli (e.g., threatening vs. non-threatening conspecific face images), similarly to anxiety-related enhanced attention to social threat reported in humans. To investigate this ‘attention bias’ (AB, i.e., the differential attention allocation to certain types of information over others) in horses, we developed a visual AB test assessing horses’ attention towards image pairs showing unfamiliar conspecifics’ facial expressions indicating, a) negative (social threat), b) more neutral (at rest), and c) positive (food anticipation) situations. We predicted that horses exhibit greater attention to negative compared to neutral or positive face images (as a …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Delineating developmental events is central to experimental research using early life stages, permitting widespread identification of changes in event timing between species and environments. Yet, identifying developmental events is incredibly challenging, limiting the scale, reproducibility and throughput of using early life stages in experimental biology. We introduce Dev-ResNet, a small and efficient 3D convolutional neural network capable of detecting developmental events characterised by both spatial and temporal features, such as the onset of cardiac function and radula activity. We demonstrate the efficacy of Dev-ResNet using 10 diverse functional events throughout the embryonic development of the great pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis. Dev-ResNet …

Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over half of Idaho’s incoming kindergarteners lack the necessary school readiness skills. The environment in which the child lives and grows, which includes the child’s parents, determines the child’s readiness for school. This study addressed Idaho parents’ roles in preparing their preschool-aged child for kindergarten, and their current ability to access resources and information on school readiness. The study was grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which provided a framework for the influence of parents on a child’s school readiness outcomes based on the idea that a person’s behavior evolves based on the relationship between the person and their environment. …
