Extension Research
Natural gas extraction is a critical driver of the economy in western North America. Ecological reclamation is important to ensure surface disturbance impacts associated with natural gas development are not permanent and to assist native biota. Previous studies in semi-arid natural gas fields within Sublette County, Wyoming, USA have shown insects respond favorably to 1–3-year-old well pads undergoing reclamation compared to older successional reference vegetation communities dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. Wyomingensis). Here, we examined well pads which were initially seed 5, 8, 10, 11, and 12 years prior to our study. We used a free, image-based …

Internal Medicine Residency
Meeting Abstract: 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting
Background: Historically, Hyponatremia has been associated with higher mortality rates and longer hospital stays in patients with solid tumors. The existing literature contains limited information on the connection between hyponatremia and Colorectal cancer (CRC). Thus, our study aimed to assess the impact of hyponatremia on mortality, morbidity, and resource usage in patients with CRC.
Methods: A retrospective analysis using the National Inpatient Sample database and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes was conducted to examine the impact of hyponatremia on mortality, morbidity, and resource utilization in patients with CRC. Categorical variables were compared …
Investigating Bias In Mortgage-Rate Machine Learning Models, Will Kalikman
Investigating Bias In Mortgage-Rate Machine Learning Models, Will Kalikman
Computer Science Senior Theses
Banks and fintech lenders increasingly rely on computer-aided models in lending decisions. Traditional models were interpretable: decisions were based on observable factors, such as whether a borrower's credit score was above a threshold value, and explainable in terms of combinations of these factors. In contrast, modern machine learning models are opaque and non-interpretable. Their opaqueness and reliance on historical data that is the artifact of past racial discrimination means these new models risk embedding and exacerbating such discrimination, even if lenders do not intend to discriminate. We calibrate two random forest classifiers using publicly available HMDA loan data and publicly …

Generous supporters of the University helped to provide the funds to make this trip possible for the group.
Minimal Specialization: The Coevolution Of Network Structure And Dynamics, Annika King
Minimal Specialization: The Coevolution Of Network Structure And Dynamics, Annika King
Theses and Dissertations
The changing topology of a network is driven by the need to maintain or optimize network function. As this function is often related to moving quantities such as traffic, information, etc., efficiently through the network, the structure of the network and the dynamics on the network directly depend on the other. To model this interplay of network structure and dynamics we use the dynamics on the network, or the dynamical processes the network models, to influence the dynamics of the network structure, i.e., to determine where and when to modify the network structure. We model the dynamics on the network …

Zoom Dysmorphia: An Eye-Tracking Study Of Self-View And Attention During Video Conferences, Kathleen H. Stimson
Cognitive Science Senior Theses
This study investigates Zoom Dysmorphia, a heightened self-awareness and self-criticism of perceived physical flaws due to prolonged self-view on video conferencing platforms, with associated behaviors resembling symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Drawing on Veale’s (2001, 2004) and Neziroglu’s (2004) cognitive-behavioral models of BDD and prior studies on BDD which suggest the development and maintenance of BDD through excessive self-focused attention and attentional bias, this study explores the potential cognitive and emotional implications of this phenomenon. Participants engaged in two mock video conferences with self-view enabled in one meeting and disabled the other for comparison. Eye tracking technology monitored their …

Caesare Indignum? The Bellum Hispaniense As A Supplement To The Corpus Caesarianum, Randolf Lukas
Caesare Indignum? The Bellum Hispaniense As A Supplement To The Corpus Caesarianum, Randolf Lukas
New England Classical Journal
Until well into the 20th century, the Bellum Hispaniense was considered the amateur work of an uneducated soldier. Recently, attempts have been made to vindicate this text as a representative of republican historiography by pointing out its similarities to pre-classical Latin prose. Against this background, the aim of this paper is to emphasize the linguistic and thematic continuities between the Bellum Hispaniense and the other works of the Corpus Caesarianum and to demonstrate how the unknown author adopts Caesarian ideology and propaganda.

Introduction To The Us Army War College Civil-Military Relations Center, Carrie A. Lee
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The United States is experiencing an era characterized by civil-military tension and conflict. From the increasing politicization of the military, to declining public trust in the military and recruiting crisis, to the erosion of norms meant to protect civilian control, to a perceived lack of accountability within the profession; healthy civil-military relations in America today are under assault. In response, the US Army War College established the Civil-Military Relations Center (CMRC) in summer 2022 to “sponsor and promote the development of a healthy, sustainable relationship between the American military, society, and political leaders through education, research, and outreach.

Raven Sentry: Employing Ai For Indications And Warnings In Afghanistan, Thomas W. Spahr
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article examines Raven Sentry, a project that employed artificial intelligence to provide advance warning of insurgent attacks in Afghanistan. During 2019 and 2020, the Resolute Support Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence (J2) benefited from a command culture open to innovation, the urgency created by the US drawdown, and a uniquely talented group of personnel that, aided by commercial sector experts, built an AI system that helped predict attacks. The war’s end cut Raven Sentry short, but the experience provides important lessons on AI and the conditions necessary for successful innovation.
