Fault-Tolerant Axial Flux Coreless Pm Machines With Independent Phase Modules, Yaser Chulaee, Ali Mohammadi, Dan M. Ionel, Matin Vatani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

In this paper, a fault-tolerant two-phase high power coreless axial flux PM (AFPM) machine with a modular structure is introduced. The performance of this machine, in terms of torque, power density, and efficiency, is compared with its three-phase counterpart configuration based on finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental results. The fault tolerance of these two configurations, considering the control systems, is also compared. A detailed power loss breakdown for the prototype two-phase and three-phase printed circuit board (PCB) stator coreless AFPM machines derived from experiments is presented, showcasing that the introduced fault-tolerant two-phase machine has comparable performance and efficiency, while …

High-Power Polyphase Pcb-Type Inductive Coupler For Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging, Donovin D. Lewis, Omer Onar, Lucas Gastineau, John F. Eastham, Dan M. Ionel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

The cost and manufacturing difficulty of traditionally wound coils for wireless charging of electric vehicles has led to the exploration of alternative manufacturing for scalable deployment at a range of rated powers. A rotating-field polyphase wireless coupler is developed with balanced fully pitched coils which are not possible with conventional Litz wire. The usage of printed circuit board (PCB) technology is proposed for the innovative construction at large dimensions due to reduced cost, increased ease of manufacturability, and potential geometric customization compared to would coils. Design considerations specific to PCBs are detailed for wireless power transfer coils including advantages such …

Comparative Analysis Of Vernier Machines With Spoke, Surface Mounted, And Halbach Pm Rotors For In-Wheel Traction, Ali Mohammadi, Aaron M. Cramer, Dan M. Ionel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Axial-flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machines are well-suited for in-wheel traction in electric vehicles due to their compact structure and higher torque density. This paper presents a large-scale design optimization of an axial-flux permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) of the MAGNUS type with a double stator configuration. The active stator features double layer wound coils, while the passive stator is unwound but has a similar profile. The reference design employs a rotor with permanent magnets (PMs) arranged in a spoke-type field intensifying pattern, providing high flux concentration. Design optimization was performed using 3-D electromagnetic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the Differential …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

This paper presents and evaluates the optimal design of a coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor for electric aircraft propulsion. Ferromagnetic cores are entirely removed from the machine’s structure to improve the specific power density and efficiency. An approach for envelope design optimization of the proposed motor is introduced, considering the polarity as an independent variable and employing an evolutionary algorithm and 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In addition to the proposed electric motor’s electromagnetic performance, fault-tolerant capability and thermal management are considered in the optimization procedure. The optimization results and similar studies from power electronic and thermal management …

The English Premier League (EPL) is the top-tier English soccer system, becoming one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. One topic within the EPL that has garnered significant attention is player compensation and roster construction. Given the varied outputs of players and the spending power of each club, the question becomes whether a specific type of pay structure maximizes on-field performance. Thus, this study aimed to understand the effect of intra-team salary disparity on performance. Results indicated that while rosters tend to be organized in a more compressed manner, salary disparity was not a significant predictor of …

Bridging The Divide: Does The Eu's Ai Act Offer Code For Regulating Emergent Technologies In America?, Renee Henson Jun 2024

Bridging The Divide: Does The Eu's Ai Act Offer Code For Regulating Emergent Technologies In America?, Renee Henson

Missouri Law Review

The European Union (“EU”) has taken the remarkable step of coming to agreement to implement the first-of-its-kind comprehensive legislation regarding artificial intelligence (“AI”), the AI Act. The AI Act adopts a risk-based approach to address diverse AI system applications and potential harms associated with AI technology. The AI Act categorizes AI systems based on risk levels, ranging from unacceptable to minimal, with corresponding regulatory requirements tailored to mitigate associated risks. Efforts are underway in the United States to establish AI regulatory frameworks, as demonstrated by the Bipartisan Framework for U.S. Act, proposed by Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Richard Blumenthal …

Resolving The Incompatibility Of Claim Accrual And Recovery In Copyright Law, Tim Knight Jun 2024

Resolving The Incompatibility Of Claim Accrual And Recovery In Copyright Law, Tim Knight

Missouri Law Review

Under Section 507(b) of the Copyright Act, which provides a three-year statute of limitations, courts have typically employed one of two distinct approaches to ascertain when a claim accrues in civil copyright infringement cases. One of these is the “Discovery Accrual Rule,” which provides that the three-year limitation period commences once a plaintiff discovers infringement. The other, the “Injury Accrual Rule,” provides that the three-year limitation period commences once a plaintiff has been harmed through infringement. An incompatibility arises because no section of the Copyright Act prescribes a specific lookback period for recovery. As such, there is an ongoing debate …

The Case For Applying Comcast's Causal Canon To The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, Taylor Todd Jun 2024

The Case For Applying Comcast's Causal Canon To The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, Taylor Todd

Missouri Law Review

For as long as there have been employer-employee relationships, there has been the potential for problems in those relationships—some of which are rooted in discrimination. In an ideal world, employees and prospective employees would not face adverse decisions based on protected characteristics. Unfortunately, the world is not always ideal and such decisions can and do happen. That said, the law attempts to bring justice when discrimination claims arise, working to balance the interests and rights of wronged employees while also setting forth standards that require employees to meet certain thresholds when making those claims. Throughout modern history, the United States …

Loose Canons: The Supreme Court's New Interpretive Methodology, Jacob Wood Jun 2024

Loose Canons: The Supreme Court's New Interpretive Methodology, Jacob Wood

Missouri Law Review

Just over fifty years ago, Congress enacted the Clean Water Act (“CWA”) to address burning rivers and bacteria infested waterways that plagued the United States. The objective of the Act was to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters.” The judicial branch is responsible for reviewing and interpreting the law, and through such review, the United States Supreme Court has been tasked with interpreting the CWA more than any piece of environmental legislation. In Sackett v. EPA, it did so using a new interpretive approach: canonism.

Using Intellectual Property To Regulate Artificial Intelligence, Dennis D. Crouch Jun 2024

Using Intellectual Property To Regulate Artificial Intelligence, Dennis D. Crouch

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines the complex relationship between intellectual property (“IP”) rights and the regulation of artificial intelligence (“AI”). It advances two primary claims: First, while IP plays a role in guiding innovative behaviors in AI development, it does not serve as an effective mechanism for direct regulation of AI. This claim is based on the observation that IP rights, such as patents and copyrights, are primarily designed to incentivize innovation and protect creative works, while lacking the levers necessary to address the broader societal implications of AI technology. The narrow focus of IP rights on rewarding creators makes them ill-suited …

Calvinball In Cole County:State Ex Rel. Fitz-James V. Bailey, Eric Humphrey Jun 2024

Calvinball In Cole County:State Ex Rel. Fitz-James V. Bailey, Eric Humphrey

Missouri Law Review

In the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, the titular boy and tiger often play a game called Calvinball. There is only one rule to Calvinball: The game cannot be played the same way twice. In one strip, Calvin and Hobbes try to play football. Hobbes yells, “The center snaps the ball to the quarterback.” Calvin retorts, “No he doesn’t! He’s secretly the quarterback for the other team! He keeps the ball!” The game descends into chaos. At the end of the strip, Calvin says, “Sooner or later, all our games turn into Calvinball.” Much like the rules of Calvinball, the …

Artificial Intelligence And Antibody Genus Claims, Thomas R. Langdon Jun 2024

Artificial Intelligence And Antibody Genus Claims, Thomas R. Langdon

Missouri Law Review

Antibodies are the guard dogs of the human immune system. They travel through the bloodstream, sniffing out foreign invaders (antigens), binding to them, and preventing them from harming the body. Instead of having a nose, four legs, and a tail, antibodies are Y-shaped proteins comprised of amino acids that viciously protect their hosts. Think of the tips of the “Y” as mouths that can bite certain antigens and lock them in place, rendering them harmless. Antibodies have the ability to identify a plethora of antigens to bind to and neutralize; “[s]ome researchers have estimated that the theoretical number of different …

A Mixed Method Examination Of Bipositivity As A Factor Protecting Cis, Trans, And Gender Expansive Plurisexual Women Against Harmful Sexual Violence Outcomes, Allison E. Cipriano

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Plurisexual women are more likely to experience sexual violence, post-traumatic stress (PTS), and alcohol use problems compared to women with single gender attraction. Disproportionately high rates of sexual violence may partially explain the prevalence of PTS and alcohol problems experienced by plurisexual women. Yet, research on sexual violence, PTS, and alcohol use problems have rarely specifically investigated these phenomena among plurisexual women. Researchers have identified a positive association between binegative experiences and risk of sexual violence among plurisexual women, suggesting that sexuality-based experiences may be connected to sexual violence victimization for this population. While identifying factors predicting risk of sexual …

Trouble’S Bruen: The Lower Courts Respond, Brannon P. Denning, Glenn H. Reynolds Jun 2024

Trouble’S Bruen: The Lower Courts Respond, Brannon P. Denning, Glenn H. Reynolds

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen revolutionized the understanding of how Second Amendment cases are to be adjudicated. Rejecting the tiered-scrutiny analysis around which the lower courts had coalesced since the 2008 Heller decision, the Court instructed courts to look to history and tradition after it was determined that state or federal regulations limited activities that fell within the protections afforded by the Second Amendment's text. Justice Thomas's opinion, however, left open significant questions about how the history-and-tradition method is to operate in practice. The Court recently held oral arguments in United States v. Rahimi, in which …

Bridge The Gap: Using Advocacy To Bridge The Gender Wage Gap In Sports - A Comparative Analysis Of Venus Williams And The Us Women’S National Team, William E. Mitchell

Student Theses and Dissertations

For decades sports and activism have been synonymous. Many remember Jesse Owens and Tommie Smith’s Olympic protests, Mohammed Ali’s anti-war protest and Collin Kaepernick kneeling to bring attention to racial injustices. More recently many joined in celebration and applauded when the US Women’s National Team secured equal pay. However, many women in sports remain invisible. Activism is a viable form of seeking change, but can the route taken by Venus Williams work in team sports? This project will seek to examine if activism is a viable change agent in sports especially in closing the gender pay gap. While several female …

In the field of visualization, understanding users’ analytical reasoning is important for evaluating the effectiveness of visualization applications. Several studies have been conducted to capture and analyze user interactions to comprehend this reasoning process. However, few have successfully linked these interactions to users’ reasoning processes. This paper introduces an approach that addresses the limitation by correlating semantic user interactions with analysis decisions using an interactive wire transaction analysis system and a visual state transition matrix, both designed as visual analytics applications. The system enables interactive analysis for evaluating financial fraud in wire transactions. It also allows mapping captured user interactions …

Dollars And Megabits: A Comparative Analysis Of Telecom And Healthcare Connect Fund, Maysam Rabbani Jun 2024

Dollars And Megabits: A Comparative Analysis Of Telecom And Healthcare Connect Fund, Maysam Rabbani

Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Two federal programs in the United States subsidize internet access for rural healthcare providers, namely, Healthcare Connect Fund (HCF) and the Telecom Program. HCF uses a subsidy mechanism that strongly incentivizes healthcare providers to shop for faster or cheaper internet. Telecom does not incentivize shopping. Theoretically, this predicts that HCF must achieve faster or cheaper internet than Telecom. I empirically test this question and find that Telecom subsidy recipients pay 132-179% more than HCF subsidy recipients on similar internet plans. Evidence point to Telecom's poor incentive design as the root cause. Eliminating this price gap would save American taxpayers $143 …

The existing literature emphasizes the significance of and needs for developing body temperature monitoring devices that can consistently and discreetly assess the temperatures of young children. Such products could offer a method to check children’s body temperature and alleviate parents’ concerns over fever. However, research gaps and challenges exist in preserving material flexibility, conducting tests in a controlled setting that mimics body temperature, and investigating consumer perceptions of this type of functional textile product. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate functional textiles using thermochromic yarns for young children’s body temperature detection, particularly focusing on testing prototypes in a controlled environment …

Moore News About The Independent State Legislature, Bruce Ledewitz Jun 2024

Moore News About The Independent State Legislature, Bruce Ledewitz

Law Faculty Publications

The big news about the Independent State Legislature Doctrine (Doctrine) is that, despite the expectations of most observers, including me, the Supreme Court did not fully adopt the Doctrine in Moore v. Harper. The majority opinion, written by Chief Justice Roberts, and joined by Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, Kavanaugh, Barrett, and Jackson, held that state courts may apply their state constitutions to state legislation affecting federal elections in the course of what the opinion called the “ordinary exercise of state judicial review.”

It is equally clear, however, that the Court in Moore federalized state constitutional decision-making in the context of federal …
