Accessible Real-Time Eye-Gaze Tracking For Neurocognitive Health Assessments, A Multimodal Web-Based Approach, Daniel C. Tisdale Jun 2024

Accessible Real-Time Eye-Gaze Tracking For Neurocognitive Health Assessments, A Multimodal Web-Based Approach, Daniel C. Tisdale

Master's Theses

We introduce a novel integration of real-time, predictive eye-gaze tracking models into a multimodal dialogue system tailored for remote health assessments. This system is designed to be highly accessible requiring only a conventional webcam for video input along with minimal cursor interaction and utilizes engaging gaze-based tasks that can be performed directly in a web browser. We have crafted dynamic subsystems that capture high-quality data efficiently and maintain quality through instances of user attrition and incomplete calls. Additionally, these subsystems are designed with the foresight to allow for future re-analysis using improved predictive models, as well as enable the creation …

Inner resources, such as psychological capital, may also be related to health behaviors and health outcomes. Objective: In this study, we sought to describe and explore associations among selected determinants of health and self-reported scores on indicators of psychological capital among youth experiencing homelessness. Methods: This cross-sectional secondary analysis was conducted with a randomized subsample of 148 youth. We calculated chi-square frequencies to describe the data, classical item analyses …

Estimating And Applying Parameters Necessary To Plan Cluster Randomized Trials (Crts) And Multisite Cluster Randomized Trials (Mscrts), Dea Mulolli Jun 2024

Estimating And Applying Parameters Necessary To Plan Cluster Randomized Trials (Crts) And Multisite Cluster Randomized Trials (Mscrts), Dea Mulolli

Dissertations

Cluster randomized trials (CRTs) are commonly used to study the effectiveness of educational interventions. During the design phase of a study, it is critical for researchers to ensure their studies are adequately powered to detect meaningful treatment effects, including both main and moderator effects. Designing CRTs with adequate power to detect main and moderator effects requires accurate estimates of design parameters. This research aims to advance the literature on design parameters for power analyses, specifically focusing on empirical estimates of intraclass correlations (ICCs). The work consists of three research papers that examine the role of including the teacher level in …

A Contingency Table Alternative To Poisson Regression In Comparing The Frequency Distributions Of Two Populations, Sandra Tay Jun 2024

A Contingency Table Alternative To Poisson Regression In Comparing The Frequency Distributions Of Two Populations, Sandra Tay

Dissertations

When testing the conditional independence between a binary outcome and a binary treatment indicator, conditioned on a categorical variable with k levels, typically represented by a K × 2 frequency table, researchers often turn to Poisson regression and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel (CMH) test. However, a common challenge encountered in these analyses is the presence of treatment effect heterogeneity. Introducing an interaction term between treatment indicators and effect modifiers in log-linear regression offers potential solutions, yet the equidispersion assumption of Poisson regression remains problematic. On the other hand, the CMH test assumes similar treatment effects across all strata, disregarding potential variations among …

Dolphin: Drone-Based Oceanic Landing Platform With High-Tech Integrated Navigation, Keanu Dayton, Ethan Hang, Jack Hartline, Jordan Puetz, Tomas Ronderos, Zara Shariff

Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses

The ocean covers 71% of the earth’s surface. With its vast size, it produces almost half of the world’s oxygen, is a source of food, and controls the climate. As humans, it is vital to our way of life. Thus, institutions and organizations have been built in order to study and conserve it; one such organization is the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). A method available to them is the use of drone imaging over the ocean’s surface. However, drones have a limited battery life that restricts the scope of missions they can pursue. A solution that we have …

Autonomous Hydroponic System, Bella Wanebo, Ashley Oh, Jason Slifka Jun 2024

Autonomous Hydroponic System, Bella Wanebo, Ashley Oh, Jason Slifka

Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses

Hydroponics is a potentially useful farming technique for growing food in climates where it is difficult to naturally farm. However, hydroponic systems in harsh climates are usually very large and unable to be easily moved around. The design of a portable, enclosed hydroponic garden using the soilless Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) with a vertical configuration that can grow spinach in Antarctica will be discussed. It will have a reversible flow to evenly distribute nutrients to stacked rows of plants. A tradeoff analysis shows that 3D printing a custom T splitter is the best option for controlling the flow within the …

This thesis explores the experience of a Santa Clara University senior design team that created an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) intended to compete in the ’Design, Build, Fly!’ competition hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The six students worked together to secure funding for the project, formulate a preliminary design, and then manufacture the aircraft. Every step of this process was iterative, allowing the team to learn from their past attempts as the project’s timeline progressed. Upon obtaining competition rules and mission requirements, the team followed a design flow that brought the plane from a sketched …

A Microgenetic Learning Analysis Of Contextuality In Reasoning About Exponential Modeling, Elahe Allahyari Jun 2024

A Microgenetic Learning Analysis Of Contextuality In Reasoning About Exponential Modeling, Elahe Allahyari

Dissertations

This work explores the complex cognitive processes students engage in when addressing contextual tasks requiring linear and exponential models. Grounded within Piagetian constructivism and the Knowledge in Pieces (KiP) epistemological perspective (diSessa, 1993, 2018), this empirical study in a clinical setting develops a Microgenetic Learning Analysis (MLA) of the reasoning of 14 students from an Algebra II course. It reveals the critical role of cognitive disequilibrium as an essential cognitive state for conceptual development and the process of reorganizing knowledge systems. The study uncovers the fluctuations in students’ reasoning patterns and the significant impact on students’ reasoning patterns of task-specific …

Macroevolution Meets Community Ecology: Does Species Interaction Influence Tempo And Mode Of Diversification In Fishes That Cross The Marine/Freshwater Boundary?, Victor De Brito Jun 2024

Macroevolution Meets Community Ecology: Does Species Interaction Influence Tempo And Mode Of Diversification In Fishes That Cross The Marine/Freshwater Boundary?, Victor De Brito

Dissertations

Evolutionary transitions between marine and freshwater ecosystems are an extreme ecological shift and expose fish lineages to novel abiotic and biotic settings. Yet, it remains unclear how those habitat transitions and the interaction with the newly invaded communities have altered the macroevolutionary dynamics of fish clades. The theory of ecological opportunity predicts that lineages that colonize species-poor regions will have greater potential for phenotypic diversification and speciation than lineages invading species-rich regions. Thus, transitions between marine and freshwaters in depauperate regions may promote adaptive radiation. While most major fish clades are restricted to either marine or freshwaters, so called transmarine/ …

The Role Of Evaluation Terms In The Quality Of Final Evaluation Reports In International Development Cooperation: A Multi-Phase Mixed Methods Study, Fanny J. Hernandez De Alvarez Jun 2024

The Role Of Evaluation Terms In The Quality Of Final Evaluation Reports In International Development Cooperation: A Multi-Phase Mixed Methods Study, Fanny J. Hernandez De Alvarez

Dissertations

In international development cooperation there is constant discussion about how to improve evaluation practices. Too little is known about where and which factors influence the quality of evaluation reports. Arguably, one influential factor is the quality of the terms of reference (TORs), which, in many sectors, are referred to as Requests for Proposals (RFPs). This study examines the role of the quality of TORs in positively affecting the design and conduct of evaluations, as well as the overall quality of final evaluation reports. This study also examines other factors that may contribute to the quality of final evaluation reports.

The …

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Polysaccharide-Based Additive To Improve Wet And Dry Strength And High-Barrier Properties Of Paper Products, Cornellius Marcello Jun 2024

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Polysaccharide-Based Additive To Improve Wet And Dry Strength And High-Barrier Properties Of Paper Products, Cornellius Marcello

Dissertations

Paper products play an essential role in our daily lives owing to their low cost, environment-friendly character, renewability, and recyclability. Paper manufacturers have been using petroleum-based strength additives (cPAM, GPAM, PAE) to meet the perceived needs of customers. On the other hand, paper produced from cellulose is hydrophilic and porous, leading to shallow water and grease resistance, causing paper manufacturers to use many kinds of coating materials such as poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and synthetic plastic to improve water resistance, especially for food packaging paper products like cups, plates, food boxes, and packaging. However, PFAS are identified as likely carcinogenic to …

The Criminalization Of Care: Health And The Home, Teneille R. Brown Jun 2024

The Criminalization Of Care: Health And The Home, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Review

In this issue of the Utah Law Review, our readers will hear from a variety of perspectives on how the criminalization of care is impacting our communities. Noa Ben-Asher and Margot Pollans describe how “regret” has been exploited by conservative groups in campaigns to paternalistically ban abortion and genderaffirming care. They lay out how the parallel legal strategies between bans on abortion and gender-affirming care are hardly coincidental. Rather, there is a coordination effort to pervert informed consent doctrine to promote “traditional family values,” and to police reductive heteronormative visions of identity.

Caught In The Middle: Providing Obstetric Care When Pregnant Women Have Complications, Ellen Clayton, Luke Gatta Jun 2024

Caught In The Middle: Providing Obstetric Care When Pregnant Women Have Complications, Ellen Clayton, Luke Gatta

Utah Law Review

Physicians in abortion-restrictive states who care for pregnant women who become ill are facing new challenges as they try to meet their patients’ needs while avoiding criminal prosecution on the one hand or civil litigation if there is a bad outcome, especially when care is affected by the threat of vague statutes, on the other. All these legal actions will occur in the public eye. Unfortunately, the proposed changes to HIPAA do not protect against criminal prosecution when the medical exception for the woman’s health is at issue.

Two changes are needed. The first is amending the state statutes to …

Preempting Red State Restrictions On The Use Of Fda-Approved Drugs In Gender-Affirming Care?, Lars Noah Jun 2024

Preempting Red State Restrictions On The Use Of Fda-Approved Drugs In Gender-Affirming Care?, Lars Noah

Utah Law Review

Some observers recently have wondered whether actions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) could federally preempt increasingly common state restrictions on gender-affirming care, particularly prohibitions on the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in adolescent patients. In theory, such a legal strategy might sidestep the need to lodge increasingly unsuccessful challenges under the Fourteenth Amendment. The Supremacy Clause offers little assistance, however, in attempting to get around these state laws. Indeed, even if the FDA eventually approved such uses for currently marketed drugs, implied preemption doctrine as currently configured probably would not do the trick, though securing …

Panel Presentation, The Criminalization Of Trans Lives And Health Care: Provider And Patient Perspective, Dana N. Johns Jun 2024

Panel Presentation, The Criminalization Of Trans Lives And Health Care: Provider And Patient Perspective, Dana N. Johns

Utah Law Review

Bans on gender affirming care are going to take a group of individuals who, as a whole, are already marginalized and already at risk. And then within that group, it’s going to segregate them even more because you’re going to have the people who can do that. You’re going to the families who can take their kids eight hours to another state. Then you’re going to the family that can’t because they can’t pay out of pocket, or they can’t take off work or they can’t make it to a state where their child can get care. These laws will …

Examining The Constitutionality Of Legislative Medical Care Bans For Transgender Youth, John Mejia Jun 2024

Examining The Constitutionality Of Legislative Medical Care Bans For Transgender Youth, John Mejia

Utah Law Review

As should be abundantly clear by this Article, the stakes of bans on genderaffirming health care for transgender adolescents are existential. The recent flood of state-law bans is a low point in the ongoing fight to ensure that all people truly enjoy the liberties and protections guaranteed by our state and federal constitutions. Stories like Utah’s are more likely the rule, not the exception. Legislatures around the country are rushing to push through this legislation as quickly as possible, seemingly to catch their opponents off guard. The overwhelming majority of federal district courts to consider these laws find them repulsive …

The Value Of Flexible Funding For Collaborative Biostatistics Units In Universities And Academic Medical Centres, Emily Slade, Sarah Jane K. Robbins, Kristen J. Mcquerry, Anthony A. Mangino

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Collaborative biostatistics units within universities and academic medical centres operate under a wide range of different funding models; common to many of these models is the challenge of allocating time to activities that are not linked to a specific research project, such as professional development, mentorship and administrative tasks. The purpose of this paper is to describe a proposed model for ‘flexible funding’, that is, funding that is not linked to a specific research project, within a collaborative biostatistics unit and to detail the benefits and challenges associated with the proposed model. We present results from a qualitative study representing …

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Complex musculoskeletal complications in children with hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) include pain, proprioception deficits, and joint instability, which may result in movement dysfunction during walking. However, no studies have explored the inter-joint coordination deficits in children with HSD. The purpose of this study was to determine the lower extremity inter-joint coupling angles, patterns, and variability during walking in children with HSD compared to children without HSD (non-HSD). Ankle, knee, and hip kinematics during the stance phase of walking in 18 children with HSD and 18 children without HSD were measured using three-dimensional motion analysis. Coupling angles, patterns, and variability of …

Working Well With Statisticians, Ryan A. Peterson, Emily Slade, Gina Maria Pomann, Walter T. Ambrosius Jun 2024

Working Well With Statisticians, Ryan A. Peterson, Emily Slade, Gina Maria Pomann, Walter T. Ambrosius

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Statistical collaboration requires statisticians to work and communicate effectively with nonstatisticians, which can be challenging for many reasons. To identify common themes and lessons for working smoothly with nonstatistician collaborators, two focus groups of primarily academic collaborative statisticians were held. We identified qualities of collaborations that tend to yield fruitful relationships and those that tend to yield nothing (or worse, with one or both parties being dissatisfied). The initial goal was to share helpful knowledge and individual experiences that can facilitate more successful collaborative relationships for statisticians who work within academic statistical collaboration units. These findings were used to design …

Exploiting Dna Damage Repair For The Treatment Of Pediatric Tumors That Arise In Fanconi Anemia, Laura M. Price Jun 2024

Exploiting Dna Damage Repair For The Treatment Of Pediatric Tumors That Arise In Fanconi Anemia, Laura M. Price

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The overall survival rate of pediatric cancer has continued to increase with new advancements in the field, however, it remains suboptimal for individuals with childhood cancer predisposition syndromes, such as Fanconi anemia. Patients with Fanconi anemia often have limited therapeutic options due to their hypersensitivity to the effect of interstrand crosslinking agents. Furthermore, the patients who do successfully respond to their cancer treatment experience significant late effects and chronic health conditions due to the treatment’s toxicity. This suggests that more targeted therapeutics are necessary to treat pediatric cancer while minimizing the toxicity to surrounding healthy tissue. This thesis aims to …

A Model For Spacecraft Relative Motion Using Continuous Periodic Thrust, Philip Alan Hittepole Jun 2024

A Model For Spacecraft Relative Motion Using Continuous Periodic Thrust, Philip Alan Hittepole

Dissertations

A model for modifying the relative orbit of a deputy satellite with respect to a chief satellite in a near-circular orbit using continuous periodic thrust is presented. This model is built on the Lovell-Spencer relative orbital elements (ROEs). The four linear ROEs (xr, yr, ar, and Az) can be linearly modified. The two angular ROEs (Er and ) can be set to advance at a desired, constant rate. Each ROE can be modified individually but may cause intra-orbit variations in other ROEs which return to their original values at the end of a thrust cycle. A method to easily calculate …

It's Disco, Baby: Queer Possibilities And Conservative Outrage, Lottie Bromham Jun 2024

It's Disco, Baby: Queer Possibilities And Conservative Outrage, Lottie Bromham

University Honors Theses

From 1974 to 1979, disco music was a cultural phenomenon, gracing radio airways and dance clubs across the United States. Just as disco music reached peak popularity, growing disapproval from rock fans and other Americans who saw the genre and scene as overly lavish, too effeminate, and too racially inclusive, forced disco out of American mainstream favor. This paper proposes a viewpoint that contextualizes disco culture as integral to the lives of queer people in New York City, analyzes the prejudices that accompanied the anti-disco movement, and situates the mainstream death of disco as an early cultural consequence of America's …

Talking Yourself Up: Multimodal Conversation Analysis Of Status In An Improvised Setting, Aubrey Lewarne Jun 2024

Talking Yourself Up: Multimodal Conversation Analysis Of Status In An Improvised Setting, Aubrey Lewarne

University Honors Theses

A single-case analysis looked at two individuals performing a scripted exercise during an Applied Improvisational workshop. The analysis examined how performers modify their linguistic and embodied actions in order to perform an assigned status role. The analysis was undertaken to better understand how social status can be constructed in everyday talk-in-interaction. I first outlined the three major theoretical frames that are relevant to the analysis: Applied Improvisation as a pedagogical approach, the use of Conversation Analysis (CA) for the analysis of language in educational contexts, and the concept of status from a sociological perspective. I then present a single-case study, …

Background: Exercise is associated with numerous physical and mental health benefits; however, many people struggle to exercise a sufficient amount and thus do not reap the benefits. Exercise is recognized as an effective treatment for depression with few risks. Professionals must understand the factors affecting exercise adherence to assist individuals of different backgrounds with adhering to exercise over the long term and to avoid common pitfalls that could hinder an individual’s progress.

Objective: This literature review aimed to identify factors affecting exercise adherence and to explore how those factors could inform strategies to increase exercise adherence among depressed …

We're Here To Stay: Nonviolence And The Disability Rights Movement, Sky Mcleod Jun 2024

We're Here To Stay: Nonviolence And The Disability Rights Movement, Sky Mcleod

University Honors Theses

Nonviolent resistance is an effective tool for enacting large scale change including the advancement of civil rights. Disabled Americans have often used nonviolent protest and civil resistance to this aim. Despite this rich history of activism, the history of the Disability Rights Movement has largely been missing from scholarship on nonviolent resistance. Similarly, historical accounts in Disability Studies provide a fragmented perspective on the use of nonviolent resistance by Disabled people. This thesis delves into this under-appreciated history. From the League of the Physically Handicapped in the 1930s to Trump’s inauguration in 2016, this paper traces the progress of the …

"Crush The Monster": Homosexuality And Moral Panic In 1950s Idaho, Ian Hadrick Jun 2024

"Crush The Monster": Homosexuality And Moral Panic In 1950s Idaho, Ian Hadrick

University Honors Theses

On October 31, 1955, three men were arrested and accused of performing homosexual acts in the quiet, suburban community of Boise, Idaho. The arrests set off a sweeping investigation of Boise's "widespread homosexual underground" that made national news and resulted in more than one thousand police interrogations and the conviction of fifteen homosexual Boiseans. Though Boise's moral panic and the ensuing investigation are among the largest of the sex panics of the 1950s, the city's 1955 homosexuality scandal has attracted relatively little scholarly attention. An in-depth analysis of the social, economic, and political forces that combined to produce hysteria in …
