Severe Vitamin B12 Deficiency Presenting With Pseudo-Thrombotic Microangiopathy And Anasarca, Aleksandra J. Kolnick, Polly D. Fraga, Jing-Lun James J. Xu, Muhammad J. Awidi

The Lahey Journal

Introduction

This report describes the case of a woman with severe vitamin B12 deficiency from pernicious anemia. Her clinical presentation, which involved microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA), was presumed to be thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). TTP is a rare life-threatening condition with high mortality and morbidity rates. It is caused by a severe deficiency of ADAMTS13, an enzyme which cleaves the von Willebrand factor in the clotting cascade. This case report highlights the importance of early recognition of TTP and other causes of MAHA. We explore the pathogenesis and management of severe, life-threatening vitamin B12 deficiency.

What Are The Lessons Learned From A Survivorship Trial During The Pandemic?, Alanna J. Horowitz, Sharneet J. Sandhu, Sherry J. Guo, Gabriel Barreto-D'Silva, Leonardo Barreto-D'Silva, Krishna Gunturu

The Lahey Journal

Purpose: The American Cancer Society (ACS) has acknowledged the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity for cancer survivors. While studies have found that adherence to these guidelines improves long-term quality of life, several studies showed that up to 70% of cancer survivors do not meet the standards. The purpose of this pilot study is to determine the effectiveness of a multi-disciplinary survivorship clinic (MDSC) in helping patients adhere to the ACS survivorship guidelines and its impacts on quality of life (QOL).

Methods: Primary objective of the study is to encourage cancer patients to adhere …

Effects Of A 10-Week Footstrike Transition Programme On Tibial Stress Fracture Probability; A Randomized Controlled Intervention Using Finite Element And Probabilistic Modelling, Jonathan Sinclair, Paul J. Taylor

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction: The aim of this study was to undertake a randomized control trial examining the effects of a 10-week footstrike transition program on tibial stress fracture risk compared to control. Material and methods: Twenty habitual rearfoot strike runners were randomly assigned to either footstrike or control groups. The footstrike group undertook a graduated 10-week program which allowed them to convert their habitual rearfoot strike pattern, whereas the control group maintained their normal training regime without any alterations to their strike pattern. Running biomechanics were collected using an eight-camera motion capture system, and ground reaction forces using a force plate. Tibial …

Evaluation Of Elevation Parameter Determination By Global Navigation Satellite Systems’ Sports Receivers: A Preliminary Study, Tomasz Szot, Marcin Sontowski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction: Sports Global Navigation Satellite Systems’ receivers have been providing athletes, coaches, and scientists with valuable information on movement for over two decades. As these receivers are specific measuring instruments, there is a need to determine their accuracy. This paper presents a relatively simple methodology for assessing sports receivers of this type regarding their elevation determination. Material and methods: The methodology was based on the Digital Terrain Model of Poland, a discrete representation of the topographic elevation of the land surface. Three wearable devices from different years of manufacture were selected for the preliminary study by calculating the Root Mean …

Towards Automating The Nautical Chart Generalization Workflow, Tamer Nada, Christos Kastrisios, Brian Calder, Christie Ence, Craig Greene, Amber Bethell Jun 2024

Towards Automating The Nautical Chart Generalization Workflow, Tamer Nada, Christos Kastrisios, Brian Calder, Christie Ence, Craig Greene, Amber Bethell

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Current nautical chart generalization methods are notably labor intensive, requiring significant levels of human intervention to compile, update, and maintain chart products. The ideal situation would be a fully automated solution for generating nautical charts seamlessly from a comprehensive database, on demand, at the appropriate scale, at the point of use, and respecting the product constraints. However, regardless of the various research efforts and advancements in technology, including those involving AI, nautical chart generalization tasks are still performed manually, or semi-manually, where a likelihood of human error is expected. This manuscript presents a research effort toward automated chart compilation through …

Evaluation Of An Autonomous Acoustic Surveying Technique For Grassland Bird Communities In Nebraska, Grace E. Schuster, Leroy J. Walston, Andrew R. Little Jun 2024

Evaluation Of An Autonomous Acoustic Surveying Technique For Grassland Bird Communities In Nebraska, Grace E. Schuster, Leroy J. Walston, Andrew R. Little

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Monitoring trends in wildlife communities is integral to making informed land management decisions and applying conservation strategies. Birds inhabit most niches in every environment and because of this they are widely accepted as an indicator species for environmental health. Traditionally, point counts are the common method to survey bird populations, however, passive acoustic monitoring approaches using autonomous recording units have been shown to be cost-effective alternatives to point count surveys. Advancements in automatic acoustic classification technologies, such as BirdNET, can aid in these efforts by quickly processing large volumes of acoustic recordings to identify bird species. While the utility of …

Teacher Effects On English Language Acquisition Of English Language Learners In Arkansas Schools, Benjamin Darley Jun 2024

Teacher Effects On English Language Acquisition Of English Language Learners In Arkansas Schools, Benjamin Darley

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

As the number of Arkansas English Language Learner students grows, Arkansas public schools grapple with how to best serve ESOL students. Questions surrounding this topic include which teachers are best equipped to serve ELLs, which schools are best suited to serve targeted ESOL programming, and what successful ESOL teachers perceive as best practices in the ESOL classroom. Little research exists analyzing student performance differences between bilingual and monolingual teachers. In addition, little research exists examining the impact of school performance on ELLs achievement. Lastly, more research is needed with Arkansas ESOL teachers to determine what practices they are using in …

Investing In The Next Generation: The Long-Run Impacts Of A Liquidity Shock, Patrick Agte, Arielle Bernhardt, Erica Field, Rohini Pande, Natalia Rigol Jun 2024

Investing In The Next Generation: The Long-Run Impacts Of A Liquidity Shock, Patrick Agte, Arielle Bernhardt, Erica Field, Rohini Pande, Natalia Rigol

Discussion Papers

Poor entrepreneurs must frequently choose between business investment and children’s education. To examine this trade-off, we exploit experimental variation in short-run microenterprise growth among a sample of Indian households and track children’s education and business outcomes over eleven years. Treated households, who experience higher initial microenterprise growth, invest more in education and are one-third more likely to send children to college. However, only literate households experience child schooling gains and their enterprises stagnate in the long-run. In contrast, illiterate treatment households experience long-run business gains but declines in children’s education. Our findings suggest that microenterprise growth has the potential to …

Primary Care Payment Models And Avoidable Hospitalizations In Ontario, Canada: A Multivalued Treatment Effects Analysis., Nibene Habib Somé, Rose Anne Devlin, Nirav Mehta, Sisira Sarma

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications

Improving access to primary care physicians' services may help reduce hospitalizations due to Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions (ACSCs). Ontario, Canada's most populous province, introduced blended payment models for primary care physicians in the early- to mid-2000s to increase access to primary care, preventive care, and better chronic disease management. We study the impact of payment models on avoidable hospitalizations due to two incentivized ACSCs (diabetes and congestive heart failure) and two non-incentivized ACSCs (angina and asthma). The data for our study came from health administrative data on practicing primary care physicians in Ontario between 2006 and 2015. We employ a …

Faculty Scholarship

Background: The study determined the proportion of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who had margin-positive disease and no other adverse pathologic findings (APF) using institutional and administrative datasets. Methods: Patients with clinical stage I or II PDAC in the National Cancer Database (NCDB 2010–2020) and those who underwent pancreatectomy at the authors’ institution (2010–2021) were identified. Isolated margin positivity (IMP) was defined as a positive surgical margin with no APF (negative nodes, no lymphovascular/perineural invasion). Results: The study included 225 patients from the authors’ institution and 23,598 patients from the NCDB. The margin-positive rates were 21.8% and 20.3%, and the …

Robot Lawyers Don’T Have Disciplinary Hearings—Real Lawyers Do: The Ethical Risks And Responses In Using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Hon. John G. Browning Jun 2024

Robot Lawyers Don’T Have Disciplinary Hearings—Real Lawyers Do: The Ethical Risks And Responses In Using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Hon. John G. Browning

Georgia State University Law Review

In the summer of 2023, the misuse of ChatGPT by two New York attorneys who filed briefs citing fabricated cases made national headlines. This cautionary tale quickly had company, as incidents of other lawyers whose use of artificial intelligence (AI) went horribly wrong filtered in from around the country, including incidents in Texas, Georgia, Colorado, and California. But it was not just errant legal research that was to blame: the cases involved everything from a faulty criminal habeas brief to flawed, mass-generated eviction pleadings by a landlord’s law firm to a high-profile white collar criminal case, in which the convicted …

Counselor Educators' Acceptance Of Immersive And Interactive Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool, Melissa A. Smith Jun 2024

Counselor Educators' Acceptance Of Immersive And Interactive Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool, Melissa A. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study explores the acceptance of immersive and interactive virtual reality (IIVR) among counselor educators in higher education. It aims to identify the factors influencing their intentions to use IIVR as a teaching tool by examining relationships between various predictors and behavioral intention. This representative survey reveals significant positive correlations between behavioral intention and performance expectancy (r =.56), effort expectancy (r = .40), and social influence (r = .55), confirming that these predictive factors play a vital role in IIVR acceptance. Additional analyses indicate that age and gender do not significantly moderate these relationships, suggesting a universal inclination toward adopting …

A Correlational Study Between Spiritual Bible Reading And Spiritual Formation Of Leaders Of Pentecostal Churches, Mark Kwablah Buku Jun 2024

A Correlational Study Between Spiritual Bible Reading And Spiritual Formation Of Leaders Of Pentecostal Churches, Mark Kwablah Buku

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study aimed to understand the nuances of spiritual Bible reading and how it connects to the spiritual maturity of Christian leaders. The lack of spiritual formation in Christian spiritual leaders motivated this research. Literature abounds with spiritual reading, biblical engagement, interpretation methodologies, and the spiritual formation of Christian leaders. However, only a few studies exist on how people engage with the Bible. There is no empirical data on how biblical interactions impact spiritual development. The theory that guided this study was Jack Mezirow’s Transformative Learning Theory. With a quantitative survey methodology and non-probability sampling, data was collected from 91 …

Diverting The Mob Mentality: The Real Dam History Of Las Vegas, Stephen J. Mislan Jun 2024

Diverting The Mob Mentality: The Real Dam History Of Las Vegas, Stephen J. Mislan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Las Vegas emerged as one of the most popular cities in the United States. Many factors impacted this improbable transformation from just a remote desert valley to a world-class resort destination in its relatively short existence. The story of how all of these factors led to such a fabulous city in such an unlikely location was truly the stuff of legends. The most prevalent narrative about the history of Las Vegas was that the mob built the city. The mob, indeed, was responsible for many casinos and casino innovations. Several other key figures, events, and circumstances contributed to the city’s …

Exploring Differences In Perceived Learning For Students In Online Versus Face-To-Face Collegiate Pilot Ground Schools: A Quantitative Causal-Comparative Study, Christopher Komsa Jun 2024

Exploring Differences In Perceived Learning For Students In Online Versus Face-To-Face Collegiate Pilot Ground Schools: A Quantitative Causal-Comparative Study, Christopher Komsa

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine if there was a difference in the perceived learning of students completing online versus face-to-face collegiate pilot ground schools. Higher education institutions with pilot training programs are highly invested in student success and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) compliance. A growing number of students are taking online courses in college, and this shift was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived learning was quantified using a web-based survey that collected perceived learning data as measured by the Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor (CAP) Perceived Learning Scale. A sample of 86 students at University …
