Empathy In The Classroom: How Great Books Create Meaningful Discussion, Courtney Whitaker

Masters Theses

Every day it seems there is another news story detailing our problem of division and polarization, especially where race is concerned. In this thesis, I will explore the ways in which teachers can facilitate empathy within their students, especially through utilizing literary works that address prejudice and division. I intend to approach this topic through the lens of a biblical worldview and draw from current scholarship in making a case for literature as a lesson in empathy. I will conclude with addressing a variety of well-known literary works and the practical ways in which teachers can utilize them in the …

Implementing 1.5 Millimeter Internal Diameter Columns And A Portable Capillary Column Instrument Into Monoclonal Antibody Analytical Workflows, Benjamin Libert Jun 2024

Implementing 1.5 Millimeter Internal Diameter Columns And A Portable Capillary Column Instrument Into Monoclonal Antibody Analytical Workflows, Benjamin Libert

Theses and Dissertations

Using 1.5 mm inner diameter (i.d.) columns to bridge the gap between routinely used 2.1 mm i.d. columns and capillary bore columns allows for a sequential but significant increase in performance without the need for specialized equipment associated with very low dispersion liquid chromatography (LC) systems. These 1.5 mm i.d. columns balance an increase in sensitivity compared to 2.1 mm i.d. columns (theoretically doubling the time-domain peak area in mass sensitive detectors for the same mass load), while mitigating the efficiency losses due to extra-column dispersion effects that are commonly observed with 1.0 mm i.d. columns. Here, the use of …

Christotechtonics: Dildonic Prostheticity In Theological Formulation, Evan Taylor Marsolek Jun 2024

Christotechtonics: Dildonic Prostheticity In Theological Formulation, Evan Taylor Marsolek

Dissertations

This dissertation asserts the following claim: Christ is a dildo. This project brings Paul B. Preciado into conversations with contemporary philosophies of religion and interrogates a hegemonic Christian theological political matrix. This project articulates a hermeneutic of christotechtonics, which studies appearance, formation, and utilization of Christ. This project is twofold. It begins with a transdisciplinary exploration that entangles queer and trans theories, religious studies, secular studies, and philosophy of religion to position reading queer and trans theories as forms of counter political theologies. The work then transitions into dildonic prostheticity in theological formulation. The 2019 Vatican document “Male and Female …

Effects Of Differing Radiation Methods On Charge Transport In Polymers, Zachary Gibson, Jr Dennison, Virginie Griseri Jun 2024

Effects Of Differing Radiation Methods On Charge Transport In Polymers, Zachary Gibson, Jr Dennison, Virginie Griseri

Presentations

The mitigation of deleterious arcing and sparking onboard spacecraft depends upon a thorough understanding of the electrical properties of the materials involved. This includes not only understanding steady-state parameters such as dark conductivity, but responses to the space environment as well. For example, radiation-induced conductivity drastically changes the conductivity of a material due to the presence of radiation. However, this change in conductivity diminishes away once the radiation is no longer present. There may also be permanent changes, or aging, in the material properties. The physical processes of aging can be complicated and are often difficult to model. Therefore, empirical …

Faculty Research 2024

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver condition in the United States, encompassing a wide spectrum of liver pathologies including steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Despite its high prevalence, there are no medications currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of NAFLD. Recent work has suggested that NAFLD has a strong genetic component and identifying causative genes will improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms contributing to NAFLD and yield targets for future therapeutic investigations. Oxidative stress is known to play an important role in NAFLD pathogenesis, yet the underlying mechanisms accounting …

Examining Dissociative Experiences And Flow States Among Collegiate Student-Athletes: Implications For Mental Health, Well-Being, And Risk-Taking, Alyssa A. Sceppaguercio Jun 2024

Examining Dissociative Experiences And Flow States Among Collegiate Student-Athletes: Implications For Mental Health, Well-Being, And Risk-Taking, Alyssa A. Sceppaguercio

ETD Collection

Notwithstanding significant privilege and benefits, research suggests that collegiate student-athletes experience higher rates of mental exhaustion, depression, anxiety, and risk-taking behaviors compared to non-athletic peers. Student-athletes have been found to compartmentalize and manage academic and athletic responsibilities by engaging in a variety of behaviors and cognitive strategies, including dissociation and flow. However, there has been relatively little research on the nature of the relationship between dissociation and flow and its impact among student-athletes. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to examine the effects of dissociative experiences and flow states on mental health, well-being, and risk-taking behaviors among collegiate …

Changes In Colonial Perspectives On Native Americans And Native-Christian Hybridity, Thomas Kelly Hassani Jun 2024

Changes In Colonial Perspectives On Native Americans And Native-Christian Hybridity, Thomas Kelly Hassani

Masters Theses

The American West of the late nineteenth century is too often exhibited by scholars who study it from the point of view of the westward expansion of European settlers on to Native land. However, the nuance of this short period should be examined with careful consideration. With westward expansion came the proselytization of Christianity to the Native populations who retained their own religious ideology. Historians and anthropologists have studied extensively the viewpoints of Christians and practitioners of Native faiths on topics of faith, prayer, and spirituality. However, similar examinations have yet to examine the more accepting and permissive attitudes that …

Bridging The Gap To Every American: How A National Regulatory Sandbox Can Prompt Radical Collaboration To Adopt Legal Artificial Intelligence Tools, Samuel Hoy Brown Vii

Georgia State University Law Review

The United States of America is at a crossroads. The foundational promises of the American dream—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—have been thrust into public pessimism as the nation’s most economically vulnerable populations find themselves outsiders in their own communities, unable to access the legal tools and services required to resolve even the most rudimentary of legal disputes. In the wake of groundbreaking studies by the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System and the American Bar Association’s Commission on the Future of Legal Services, the need for alternative legal service providers is more prevalent than ever. …

A(I)Ccess To Justice: How Ai And Ethics Opinions Approving Limited Scope Representation Support Legal Market Consolidation, Hon. C. Scott Maravilla Jun 2024

A(I)Ccess To Justice: How Ai And Ethics Opinions Approving Limited Scope Representation Support Legal Market Consolidation, Hon. C. Scott Maravilla

Georgia State University Law Review

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our society and bringing the legal profession with it. The use of Generative AI (GenAI) in legal proceedings has received negative publicity from high profile mishaps in court filings. In one case, attorneys used the publicly available online GenAI tool, ChatGPT, to write a legal brief in which ChatGPT proceeded to make up its own citations. Following this, among other instances of the misuse of GenAI, courts have begun to require disclosures and limit the use of GenAI technology. These prohibitions, however, are the result of a fundamental misunderstanding of the appropriate use of GenAI …

Reinforcement Learning For Robotic Tasks: Analyzing And Understanding The Learning Process Using Explainable Artificial Intelligence Methods, Brian J. Campana Jun 2024

Reinforcement Learning For Robotic Tasks: Analyzing And Understanding The Learning Process Using Explainable Artificial Intelligence Methods, Brian J. Campana

Theses and Dissertations

As deep reinforcement learning (RL) models gain traction across more industries, there is a growing need for reliable agent-explanation techniques to understand these models. Researchers have developed explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods to help understand these 'black boxes'. While these models have been tested on many supervised learning tasks, there is a lack of examination of how these well these methods can explain hard reinforcement learning problems like robotic control. The sequential nature of learning RL policies and testing episodes create fundamentally different policies over time compared to more traditional supervised learning models. In this thesis, two important questions are …

Using Brain Break® In The Classroom To Increase On-Task Behavior And Decrease Disruptive Behaviors Of Students, Michaela C. Elza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Off-task and disruptive behavior are one of the greatest causes to loss of instructional time in the classroom. Teachers spend time addressing student challenging behaviors which consequently cuts time from their academic instruction. Antecedent exercise programs, such as Brain Breaks®, provide teachers with short physical activity videos that provide students a movement break between long periods of academics without the need for expensive equipment. This study evaluated the effects of Brain Breaks® videos to increase students’ on-task and decrease disruptive behaviors in the classroom. Three participants were included in this study, Jordan a 6-year-old male, Andrew an 8-year-old male, and …

Maturing Out Of Crime: A Test Of The Integrated Maturation Theory Of Desistance, Kelly E. Kortright Jun 2024

Maturing Out Of Crime: A Test Of The Integrated Maturation Theory Of Desistance, Kelly E. Kortright

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation partially tested a newer integrated theory, the Integrated Maturation Theory (IMT) of desistance. IMT argues that as maturation increases across five maturation domains (social role, civic, identity, psychosocial, and neurocognitive) the likelihood of offending decreases. Using a sample of serious justice-involved juveniles spanning ages 14-24 from the Pathways to Desistance Study, the individual and simultaneous maturation domain development of the social role, civic, identity, and psychosocial maturation domains, were explored for heterogeneity. Using a group-based trajectory modeling approach, including multi-trajectory modeling, this study advanced the understanding of maturation development by identifying sub-groups following declining trajectories of maturation and …

Evaluating The Use Of Behavioral Skills Training And Tactile Prompts To Increase Positive Staff Interactions In Residential Care, Kaleigh R. Cernosek Jun 2024

Evaluating The Use Of Behavioral Skills Training And Tactile Prompts To Increase Positive Staff Interactions In Residential Care, Kaleigh R. Cernosek

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Youth in residential care are often victims of maltreatment and are more likely to be revictimized. Residential facilities tend to be restrictive and punitive based, often implementing restraints as an intervention. Previous research has shown that a positive living climate is essential for increasing quality of life and meeting treatment goals. Building rapport between staff and youth can help promote a positive living climate and positively impact youth behavior. Behavior-specific praise (BSP) has been evaluated in school settings to increase student engagement and compliance. However, there has been limited research on the effects of increasing BSP in residential facilities. Therefore, …

Advancing Adversarial Audio: Human-In-The-Loop Black-Box Attacks, Rui Duan Jun 2024

Advancing Adversarial Audio: Human-In-The-Loop Black-Box Attacks, Rui Duan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adversarial audio attacks pose significant security challenges to real-world audio applications. Attackers may manipulate speech to impersonate a speaker, gaining access to smart devices like Amazon Echo. In audio applications, there are two key areas: music and speech. In music, most attackers create a small noise-like perturbation on the original signal to evade copyright detection. However, this method degrades music's perceived quality for human listeners. In the speech, creating an adversarial example often requires many queries to the target model, a process too cumbersome for practical use in real-world scenarios, like interacting with smart devices numerous times.

In this dissertation, …

The Glucosylamine Oxidation Pathway Of Vitamin C Recycling, James M. Hempe, Daniel S. Hsia, Arthur Hagar, Larry Byers Jun 2024

The Glucosylamine Oxidation Pathway Of Vitamin C Recycling, James M. Hempe, Daniel S. Hsia, Arthur Hagar, Larry Byers

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The proposed glucosylamine oxidation pathway (GOP) is a two-step, intraerythrocyte, thermodynamically favorable nonenzymatic reaction that first binds glucose to the N-terminal valine of beta globin (βVal1) to form a closed-chain glucosylamine that can spontaneously reduce oxidized vitamin C to its antioxidant form. This review summarizes analytical, biochemical and clinical research supporting the existence of the GOP and the surprising hypothesis that βVal1 glucosylamine is a reducing agent that works cooperatively with reduced glutathione to dynamically regulate vitamin C recycling during naturally occurring periods of transiently or chronically elevated blood glucose and oxidant production. Rationale for the existence of the GOP …

Teacher-Implemented Accumulated And Distributed Schedules In The Classroom Setting, Jessica S. Benevides Jun 2024

Teacher-Implemented Accumulated And Distributed Schedules In The Classroom Setting, Jessica S. Benevides

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emotional behavior disorders (EBDs) are becoming increasingly more common in schools (Forness et al., 2012). Challenging behavior can negatively impact a teacher’s implementation of classroom management strategies which can be detrimental to student outcomes (Garwood et al., 2017; Gilmour et al., 2022) and increase the risk for teacher burnout (Fernet et al., 2012). Evidence-based strategies such as differential reinforcement have been shown to be effective at reducing challenging behavior (Boniecki & Moore, 2003; Petscher et al., 2009). Moreover, accumulated and distributed reinforcer arrangements using tokens have been shown to both reduce challenging behavior and increase task engagement (Chen et al., …
