Research Showcase

Background: Sotalol is an antiarrhythmic with both class II and III properties, available intravenously since 2015. While its use in adults is well-documented, there is limited pediatric data. It has been used in pediatric patients for various supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias. Although early reports suggest intravenous sotalol is safe and effective in children, available data remain limited.

Objectives/Goal: The primary purpose of this study is to characterize changes in hemodynamic parameters with the administration of intravenous sotalol.  Additional aims were also to determine how frequently arrhythmias terminated after the initial dose.

APU students come from diverse backgrounds, including Alaska Native/American Indian, urban, rural, and international communities, bringing lived experiences that shape both learning and practice. In this study, we demonstrated how application of heat stress, followed by rapid cooling, affected the rate at which beet armyworm caterpillars gained weight, entered pupation and exited their pupae as moths via eclosion.

Background:

Single right ventricle and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) are congenital heart diseases that require multiple palliative surgeries to create a single right ventricular system. 25-30% of these patients develop significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR), which is associated with worse outcomes among all stages of palliation.

Echocardiography remains the cornerstone imaging modality for serial evaluation in these patients.  However, estimating tricuspid regurgitation is highly subjective in the pediatric population, necessitating need for reliable and reproducible quantitative echocardiography markers. Currently, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the gold standard for quantification of tricuspid regurgitation with good accuracy and reproducibility.
