Complications And Influential Perioperative Factors Associated With Spaceoar Hydrogel Placement, Kerith Wang, Rishabh Simhal, Cassra Clark, Mark Mann, James Mark, Costas Lallas, Robert Den, Edouard Trabulsi

OBJECTIVE: To examine one academic institution's experiences with SpaceOAR placement, its associated complications, and periprocedural characteristics that affect outcomes for the purpose of quality improvement.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 233 patients who received SpaceOAR from four surgeons and one radiation oncologist between 2018 and 2021. Variables such as demographics, oncologic parameters, radiation plan, and radiographic assessment of hydrogel placement were recorded. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was used to assess comorbidity risk. Mann-Whitney and Fisher's exact tests were performed to compare patients with and without complications.

A changing landscape in youth sports and educational institutions has resulted in a growing number of high school student-athletes being coached by adults who do not work in the schools they attend. This study provides a foundational understanding of the relationship between in-building coaches, hereafter referred to as educator-coaches, and their student-athletes. Using a generic descriptive-interpretive qualitative research (GDI-QR) approach, this study examines the unique relationship within schools and what benefits and challenges this model may provide for the mentors and mentees involved. Framed around the concepts of natural mentorship and social-emotional learning (SEL), this study highlights how the educator-coaches …

Adaptive emotion regulation is characterized by the ability to flexibly select and switch between different strategies, depending on individual and contextual factors. Previous studies have shown that people prefer disengagement strategies to regulate more intense emotions, while they prefer engagement strategies to regulate less intense emotions. In this study, we investigated whether – in addition to the intensity of emotions – the discrete emotion type (disgust versus fear) also affects emotion regulation strategy preferences. Excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle myofibers depends upon Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum through the ryanodine receptor/Ca2+-release channel RyR1. The RyR1 contains ∼100 Cys thiols of which ∼30 comprise an allosteric network subject to posttranslational modification by S-nitrosylation, S-palmitoylation and S-oxidation. However, the role and function of these modifications is not understood. Although aberrant S-nitrosylation of multiple unidentified sites has been associated with dystrophic diseases, malignant hyperthermia and other myopathic syndromes, S-nitrosylation in physiological situations is reportedly specific to a single (1 of ∼100) Cys in RyR1, Cys3636 in a manner gated by pO2. Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis Prescribing Patterns For Patients With Orthopedic Trauma: A Clinical Vignette Survey, Stephen Breazeale

Background: A recent clinical trial suggested aspirin is a viable alternative to enoxaparin for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in patients after orthopedic trauma. The initial impact of these findings on VTE prophylaxis prescribing is unknown. The study aimed to evaluate stated VTE prophylaxis prescribing patterns among clinicians who treat patients after orthopedic trauma.

Methods: For this clinical vignette survey, we recruited surgeons and advanced practice providers who prescribed VTE prophylaxis to patients with orthopedic trauma across 40 states. Social Change Requires More Justification Than Maintaining The Status Quo, John C. Blanchar, Scott Eidelman, Eric Allen

Three studies demonstrate that, all else being equal, the threshold for justifying social change is higher than the threshold for maintaining the status quo. Higher standards for justifying change were observed across institutional requirements (Study 1), political candidates (Study 2), and city ordinances (Study 3). In all studies, lopsided standards increased as status quo preference increased. Study 1 revealed higher standards for novel entities lacking precedence, Study 2 demonstrated increased information-seeking about non-status quo alternatives to scrutinize them, and Study 3 showed biased interpretation of evidence toward maintaining the status quo, even when evidence skewed toward advocating change. Limited estimates exist on risk factors for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in Asian, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander women. Participants in this study included 1734 Asian (n = 785 case and 949 control participants), 266 Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (n = 99 case and 167 control participants), 1149 Hispanic (n = 505 case and 644 control participants), and 24 189 White (n = 9981 case and 14 208 control participants) from 11 studies in the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium. IL17 is required for the initiation and progression of pancreatic cancer, particularly in the context of inflammation, as previously shown by genetic and pharmacological approaches. However, the cellular compartment and downstream molecular mediators of IL17-mediated pancreatic tumorigenesis have not been fully identified. This study examined the cellular compartment required by generating transgenic animals with IL17 receptor A (IL17RA), which was genetically deleted from either the pancreatic epithelial compartment or the hematopoietic compartment via generation of IL17RA-deficient (IL17-RA-/-) bone marrow chimeras, in the context of embryonically activated or inducible Kras. Child inhibition can be learned consciously and unconsciously, and it is highly dependent on the quality of interaction with adults (i.e., parents and teachers). However, little is known about the impact of teachers’ emotional management and sensitivity on the development of inhibition skills among students in early childhood classrooms. This dissertation takes an integrative approach to explore whether teacher-child relationship and teacher self-efficacy have a bidirectional connection and how they work to impact child inhibition, directly and indirectly. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) screening recommendations do not support prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for older men. Such screening often occurs, however. It is, therefore, important to understand how frequently and among which subgroups screening occurs, and the extent of distant stage PCa diagnoses among screened older men. Methods: Using the 2014–2016 linked Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) and Medicare administrative database, we identified men 68 and older diagnosed with PCa and categorized their PSA testing in the three years preceding diagnosis as screening or diagnostic. BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer frequently co-occur due to shared risk factors such as obesity, which is linked to CVD and 14 cancer types. This study explores whether CVD pathophysiologies, combined with obesity, increase cancer risk, impacting clinical management.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, spanning 28 years, were analyzed. The cohort included 5127 participants with incident CVD (myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, coronary heart disease), of whom 1511 developed a first primary cancer. IMPORTANCE: Robotic exoskeletons leverage technology that assists people with spinal cord injury (SCI) to walk. The efficacy of home and community exoskeletal use has not been studied in a randomized clinical trial (RCT).

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether use of a wheelchair plus an exoskeleton compared with use of only a wheelchair led to clinically meaningful net improvements in patient-reported outcomes for mental and physical health.

In metazoans mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or retrotransposon cDNA released to cytoplasm are degraded by nucleases to prevent sterile inflammation. It remains unknown whether degradation of these DNA also prevents nuclear genome instability. We used an amplicon sequencing-based method in yeast enabling analysis of millions of DSB repair products. In non-dividing stationary phase cells, Pol4-mediated non-homologous end-joining increases, resulting in frequent insertions of 1-3 nucleotides, and insertions of mtDNA (NUMTs) or retrotransposon cDNA. Yeast EndoG (Nuc1) nuclease limits insertion of cDNA and transfer of very long mtDNA ( >10 kb) to the nucleus, where it forms unstable circles, while promoting the …

IMPORTANCE: To inform the design and implementation of targeted interventions to reduce the future burden of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers in Texas, it is necessary to examine the county and health service region (HSR) levels of (1) the proportion of children and teenagers aged 9 to 17 years who initiated and were up to date for HPV vaccination series and (2) HPV-related cancer incidence rates (IRs).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate temporal trends and geospatial patterns of HPV vaccination initiation and up-to-date status as well as HPV-related cancer rates at county and HSR levels in Texas.
