Fast Discovery Of Motivic Patterns In Symbolic Music Via Lossy Compression, Adam James Wilson

Generative systems that react to live musicians require rapid analysis of musical data, which rules out deep learning models: they cannot be trained within the time constraints of live performance. But because analysis results are often transformed before use, we are free to reduce the parameters that undergo transformation to a small set of primitive states. We address this coincidence of constraint and opportunity with an algorithm for online discovery of maximal musical motives that achieves speed through lossy compression: the pitch and inter-onset-interval deltas for all pairs of events in a potential motive are reduced to two-bit values, conceptualized …

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is the leading cause of adulthood injury-related death and disability worldwide. Despite ABI’s prevalence, little is known about the extent to which social workers are prepared for brain injury working and specifically pre-qualifying brain injury curricula. This study employed a nine-item survey regarding brain injury social work knowledge. The survey asked about curricula inclusion within social work pre-qualification via multiple education providers to understand the extent to which brain injury training is incorporated within UK courses. Sex-specific penetrance in autosomal-dominant Mendelian conditions is largely understudied. The neurodevelopmental disorder Pilarowski-Bjornsson syndrome (PILBOS) was initially described in females. Here, we describe the clinical and genetic characteristics of the largest PILBOS cohort to date, showing that both sexes can exhibit PILBOS features, although males are overrepresented. A mouse model carrying a human-derived Chd1 missense variant (Chd1^R616Q/+) displays female-restricted phenotypes, including growth deficiency, anxiety, and hypotonia. Orchiectomy unmasks a growth-deficiency phenotype in male Chd1^R616Q/+ mice, while testosterone rescues the phenotype in females, implicating androgens in phenotype modulation. Natural water bodies become eutrophic due to phosphate pollution from industrial and agricultural sectors. This research addresses waste disposal and water pollution at the same time by recycling spent low-temperature shift catalyst (LTSSC) from the fertilizer industry as a sustainable phosphate adsorbent. High surface area (247±5 m2/g), mesoporous structure, and many metal oxide sites (CuO 49%, ZnO 32.2%, and Al2O₃ 13.9%) were shown by characterization using XRF, XRD, BET, SEM–EDX, FTIR, particle size analysis, and zeta potential. Under optimum conditions (contact time 1.64 h, dose 5 g/L, initial concentration 9.58 mg/L, stirring 278 rpm), Response Surface Methodology optimization achieved 92.95±2.8% …

Actinomycetes are gram-positive, non-spore-forming, filamentous anaerobic bacteria that constitute part of the normal oral and intestinal flora and are widely distributed in the environment. Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative granulomatous infection frequently associated with deep-seated and recurrent infections. This five-year retrospective study (June 2018–June 2024) aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Actinomyces species isolated from various clinical specimens. Samples received for Anaerobic culture and sensitivity were processed as per standard protocol and antibiogram was obtained for the respective pathogen isolated. Abiotic stress conditions impair plant metabolism partly by inducing the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Melatonin, a multifunctional indoleamine, has emerged as an important regulator of plant responses to oxidative stress. This review highlights recent findings on the interactions among phytomelatonin, ROS homeostasis, antioxidant metabolism, photosynthetic protection, stress priming, and abiotic stress tolerance. We discuss how melatonin modulates the antioxidative response under diverse stress conditions and evaluate its effects on photosynthetic performance, ROS signaling, and membrane stability. Special attention is given to priming studies showing that melatonin pretreatment can improve stress tolerance. Emerging evidence from plant tissue culture …

Prangos denticulata (Apiaceae) is a critically endangered and narrowly endemic species restricted to Ankara, Türkiye. To provide genomic resources for its conservation and evolutionary study, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated its complete chloroplast genome using short-read next-generation sequencing. The circular plastome was 153,486 bp in length, exhibiting the typical quadripartite structure with a large single-copy (86,440 bp), small single-copy (17,894 bp), and two inverted repeats (49,152 bp), and an overall GC content of 37.8%. Drought Priming Improves Waterlogging Tolerance In Alfalfa, But Less Effectively Than Waterlogging Priming, Gürkan Demi̇rkol, Ni̇lüfer Kara

Waterlogging severely restricts growth and productivity in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), necessitating effective strategies to improve stress tolerance. This study investigated whether drought priming or waterlogging priming could enhance tolerance to subsequent waterlogging stress in the alfalfa cultivar “Bilensoy-80”. Plants were subjected to drought priming, waterlogging priming, or no priming prior to progressive waterlogging stress for 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 days. Waterlogging priming consistently alleviated growth inhibition, maintained chlorophyll content, and reduced oxidative damage under prolonged stress. Background:

Inclusive music-making requires instruments that support varied bodies, abilities, musical backgrounds, and forms of participation. Digital musical instruments provide diverse approaches to sound creation, and fabric-based interfaces offer an alternative interaction modality that may support participation for some users and contexts. Their tactile and deformable properties enable forms of interaction that differ from conventional rigid or screen-based controllers and may offer inclusive possibilities in particular settings.

Matching And Mentoring: Effects Of Managers On Worker Productivity, Chengyuan Hua

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper studies how managers matter for worker productivity by exploiting manager moves in Major League Baseball. I first show that manager effects are primarily match-specific using an AKM-type model. Then, staggered difference-in-differences results show positive effects of shared characteristics, including same position, both lefties, and same hometown. Effects of same position and both lefties are larger than same hometown. Effects are more pronounced for younger and less productive workers, indicating that mentoring is the primary mechanism while in-group bias is secondary. Finally, there is suggestive evidence that a manager’s productivity as a worker is not a positive characteristic.

Adventitious root formation in stem cuttings of Phoebe bournei, an economically and ecologically significant woody species, is a major bottleneck in clonal propagation. To elucidate the impact of spectral quality on early adventitious root development, we characterized the morphological, hormonal, and transcriptomic dynamics of primordium initiation and differentiation under white, red, and blue light. Under red light, cuttings exhibited the earliest and most pronounced formation of white filamentous structures at lenticels, indicative of root primordium initiation, as early as 20 days after cutting, whereas white and blue light treatments showed delayed responses.
