Death: The Great Antagonist In Poe’S “The Cask Of Amontillado”, Majed S. Al-Lehaibi

Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” has been read as a story of a premeditated crime, of revenge and the protagonist’s ultimate pride in his well-executed crime. Readers are repulsed by the sheer evil of Montresor, the main character of the story. However, this paper argues that this reading barely scratches the surface of the depth and complexity of this story. It argues that the story is told in the form of a confession. The narrator, an elderly Montresor, is full of remorse, and in telling the story, he is seeking absolution. In its deeper meaning, “The Cask of Amontillado” …

Half of state residents envision bad times for the national and state economies over the next year. Most Rhode Islanders say their cost of living has increased in the past year, particularly those with the highest incomes. Groceries, gasoline, and energy are mentioned by three-quarters or more as areas where they have seen notable increases. More than three-quarters of Granite Staters say their cost of living has increased in the past year, especially gasoline, groceries, and energy. More than three-quarters expect tariffs to cause prices to increase and a majority disapprove of President Trump's use of them so far. Overall, Granite Staters are largely pessimistic about the wider national economy, with a majority expecting a recession within the next year, but are more ambivalent about the New Hampshire economy.

Ischial pressure ulcer reconstruction requires durable coverage while preserving local donor options for possible recurrence. The inferior gluteal artery perforator (IGAP) flap is a muscle-sparing option, but superthin elevation requires precise knowledge of the superficial fascial plane and the subcutaneous course of the selected perforator. This technical note describes colour Doppler ultrasonography-guided superficial fascial plane mapping before superthin IGAP flap elevation in a 27-year-old paraplegic patient with a chronic left ischial pressure ulcer who presented in 2025 to a tertiary care university hospital in Muğla, Turkey. Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma Arising From Somatic-Type Malignant Transformation Of A Nonseminomatous Germ Cell Tumor: A Case Report, Abdel Martinez Borrego, Brandon Cantazaro, Fatimah Bello, Christine Vega, Natacha Vargas, Payal Bhakta, Renzo Arauco

Somatic-type malignant transformation (STM) is a rare but aggressive complication of nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCTs), most commonly arising from the teratomatous component and frequently occurring in metastatic sites. We report the case of a man in his 20s with a history of mixed NSGCT (50% yolk sac tumor, 40% teratoma, and 10% embryonal carcinoma) treated with left orchiectomy and chemotherapy in 2023, who initially responded to treatment but was subsequently lost to follow-up. He presented with one week of progressive dyspnea and pleuritic left-sided chest pain. Serum alpha-fetoprotein was markedly elevated at 2,966.7 ng/mL. Retained encrusted ureteral stents represent a complex urologic problem, particularly in patients with limited healthcare access. We present a 28-year-old undocumented female with a 10-month retained ureteral stent who developed massive right-sided encrustation, including a 3 cm proximal renal stone near the renal pelvis and a 5-6 cm bladder stone, classified as FECal Grade IV-V. A single-session combined approach consisting of robot-assisted cystolithotomy, intraoperative ureteroscopy with stent exchange, and robot-assisted pyelolithotomy was performed successfully. Intraoperative ureteroscopy between operative phases confirmed ureteral clearance and enabled immediate stent placement without repositioning delay. Dementia is an umbrella term for progressive conditions affecting memory, thinking, communication and other cognitive functions. These changes can make social interaction challenging, particularly in unfamiliar or overstimulating environments. Although social interactions between staff and people living with dementia are recognised as an aspect of care, existing literature across health and social care settings largely focuses on general care needs and experiences rather than social interaction specifically. Consequently, there is limited understanding of the types of social interactions that occur and the contextual factors influencing them. With an ever-increasing population, regular drought cycles, and environmental concerns, there is a public discourse about agricultural irrigation water use. This fact sheet is an effort to step back in time to consider the heritage of irrigated agriculture in Utah, from prehistory to the present, and the modernization of irrigation driven by global industrialization and the information age.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections (BSI) are a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. Rapid diagnosis of BSI is critical for timely and appropriate clinical management, but current diagnostic strategies have a prolonged turnaround time or only identify select pathogens with minimal prognostic information.

METHODS: We examined serial serologic samples from 77 intensive care unit (ICU) patients at time points before, during, and after diagnosis of presumptive BSI to identify host-derived protein biomarkers associated with specific organisms and with clinical outcomes in BSI. BACKGROUND: Point-of-care testing (POCT) has expanded rapidly across healthcare systems, increasing both program scale and operational complexity. However, quantitative benchmarking data describing how POCT programs are structured and supported across institutions remain limited.

METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to characterize POCT program support, including program scope, staffing, operational practices, governance, and challenges. The survey was distributed electronically through professional networks, and 93 institutional responses were analyzed. Descriptive analyses were performed, and derived metrics, including sites per point-of-care testing coordinator (POCC), were used to evaluate the relationship between program scale and staffing.

The Africa Working Group, under the auspices of the Global Laboratory Quality Initiative of the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM), conducted several educational workshops in Africa to promote laboratory quality in the region. The challenges faced in maintaining quality in clinical laboratories in low-resource countries may differ from region to region and country to country. To better understand current gaps and inform our engagement with partners in Africa, a needs assessment survey was distributed to 1427 ADLM members in Africa and further disseminated through local partners, resulting in 121 responses from participants across 8 countries in the region. …

This review synthesizes current evidence on the application of machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and the Internet of Things (IoT) across the food production continuum, from raw material inspection to consumer-facing nutrition guidance. Centralized cloud-based approaches to anomaly detection are hindered by their inherent latency and privacy issues while independent or stand-alone approaches to edge-based anomaly detection do not have enough data to effectively detect anomalies. Two heat treatment processes for a nickeliferous laterite sample are presented, one by the conventional muffle route and the other by microwave. The heating was carried out in order to improve the dissolution of nickel in an acid medium. The study describes the changes observed in the mineral for the increase in temperature as a consequence of radiation in the microwave and in the muffle. The changes in the mineral crystalline phases were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The leaching media consisted of a 1 M sulfuric acid solution at ambient conditions for 7 h. We study a time-inhomogeneous nonlinear SDE with drift and diffusion governed by state-dependent variable exponents. This framework generalizes models like the geometric Brownian motion (GBM) and the constant elasticity of variance (CEV), offering flexibility to capture complex dynamics while posing analytical challenges. Using a fixed-point approach, we prove existence and uniqueness, analyze higher-order moments, derive asymptotic estimates, and assess stability. Finally, we illustrate an application where Poisson’s equation admits a probabilistic representation via a timehomogeneous nonlinear SDE with state-dependent variable exponents.

Companion Matrices Associated To Stochastic Matrices, Andreas Boukas, Philip Feinsilver

Starting with a stochastic matrix, we study the behavior of powers of an associated companion matrix, which has the same characteristic polynomial as the original matrix. In general the companion matrix will have negative entries while maintaining rowsums equal to 1. We will find the growth rate even if the Ces`aro limit of the sums of the companion matrix diverge. Surprisingly, in the irreducible aperiodic case the powers of the companion matrix will converge even though the norm of the matrix exceeds 1 and it has possibly negative entries.
