Changes in land use and land cover (LULC) are critical for evaluating global spatiotemporal trends, especially regarding climate change and urbanization. This study investigates the dynamics of Landsat surface temperature (LST) in response to LULC changes and their effects on the seasonal microclimate in Kasur District, Pakistan. Using the Google Earth Engine platform, we employed a random forest algorithm to detect LULC changes (cropland, forest, built-up, fallow, barren, and water) and analyze seasonal spectral indices from Landsat imagery for 1988, 2002, and 2022. Significant LULC changes were observed, including a 9.8% increase in built-up areas, a 4.2% decrease in cropland, …

Automation & Ai In Southern Nevada: A High Stake Game For Hospitality Workers, An Pham
Student Research
After a year filled with excitement around artificial intelligence, it’s easy to overlook that both AI and automation have already been present in various capacities. Thankfully, fanfare in AI and automation has come at a critical time as it shifts the focus from questioning whether machines will replace human workers to understanding when that will happen. In my paper, titled “Automation & AI in Southern Nevada: A High-Stakes Game for Hospitality Workers,” I aim to highlight both the disruptive consequences of automation and AI on the hospitality workforce in Southern Nevada and the importance of addressing these issues without delay. …

Development Of Electrically Conductive Asphalt Pavements For Deicing Applications In Cold Regions, Ashith Marath Padinhare Purakkal
Theses and Dissertations
Winter conditions often lead to significant traffic delays and safety risks due to ice or snow accumulation on pavement surfaces. This study evaluates the potential of electrically conductive asphalt (ECA) pavements to prevent such accumulations by melting ice and snow under real-world conditions. The study involved preparing ECA mixtures using graphite and carbon fibers, three carbon fiber lengths (3 mm, 6 mm, and 24 mm), and aggregates with two nominal maximum aggregate sizes (NMAS) (4.75 mm and 9.5 mm). Electrical resistivity, rutting susceptibility and cracking resistance of compacted ECA mixtures were evaluated. Results indicated that ECA mixtures with 15% graphite …

Are Otolaryngologists Seeing More Cough? Longitudinal Trends And Patterns, James R. Xu, Paul C. Bryson
Student Scholarship
Objective: Otolaryngologists play an increasing role in managing cough, but little data exists examining the demographics of this patient population and the referral patterns that influence their access to care. This study sought to elucidate these factors using a longitudinal, nationwide database to minimize sampling bias and identify trends representative of the national population. Study Design: Nationally representative survey. Setting: National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). Methods: Visits with a diagnosis and chief complaint of cough between 2005 and 2019 in NAMCS were examined. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to compare patient demographics between visits to surgical specialists, medical …

Notes From The Field - A Militarização Do Espaço Urbano Do Rio De Janeiro: Grupos Armados, Forças De Segurança E Forças Armadas E A Disputa Por Território, Thiago Sardinha
Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
The Militarization of the Urban Space of Rio de Janeiro is the synthesis of different historical processes: The state through massive incarceration of black and racialized people, and the systematic elimination of black poor people from favelas through urban policing operations by security and armed forces, traffic patrols, and paramilitary/vigilante groups. Together, they result in the production of different actors that exert violent territorial domination for economic exploitation and social control.

Patriotism is often described as the “love of country” that individuals display in the acclamation of their national community. Despite the prominence of this sentiment in various societies around the world, organizational research on patriotism is largely absent. This omission is surprising because entrepreneurs, human resource (HR) divisions, and firms frequently embrace both patriotism and patriotic organizational practices. These procedures include (among other interventions) national symbol embracing, HR practices targeted toward military members and first responders, the adulation of patriots and celebration of patriotic events, and patriotic-oriented corporate social responsibility (CSR). Here, the authors argue that research on HR management …

Effective weed management is a significant challenge in agronomic crops which necessitates innovative solutions to reduce negative environmental impacts and minimize crop damage. Traditional methods often rely on indiscriminate herbicide application, which lacks precision and sustainability. To address this critical need, this study demonstrated an AI-enabled robotic system, Weeding robot, designed for targeted weed management. Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) was selected as it is the most troublesome weed in Nebraska. We developed the full stack (vision, hardware, software, robotic platform, and AI model) for precision spraying using YOLOv7, a state-of-the-art object detection deep learning technique. The …

Pro-regenerative lipid mediator 1 (PreM1) is a specialized pro-resolving lipid mediator that promotes wound healing and regenerative functions of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial cells, and macrophages. The healing of third-degree (3°) burns and regenerative functions of MSCs are enhanced by ACgel1, an arginine-and-chitosan-based protein-mimic hybrid hydrogel. Adipose-tissue derived microvascular fragments (MVFs) are native vascularization units and a rich source of MSCs, endothelial cells, and perivascular cells for tissue regeneration. Here we describe an innovative PreM1-MVFs-ACgel1 construct that incorporated PreM1 and MVFs into ACgel1 via optimal design and fabrication. This construct delivered PreM1 to 3°-burn wounds at least up to …

Experiences Of Incivility And Ageism In Currently Enrolled Rn To Bs Nursing Students And Their Intent To Quit, Kimberly A. Balko
Dissertations
Student registered nurses face barriers to successful completion of a bachelor's of science degree program when faced with memories of incivility within their basic nursing program and their current experiences of incivility and ageism in the classroom, as well as in the workplace. This incivility, along with generational differences, adds to the growing concerns of nurses' intent to quit their employers or the profession, which adds to the current and future nursing shortage. The incorporation of multigenerational education for nurses could enhance generational awareness including ageism, communication skills, conflict resolution, coaching, and mentoring to guide employed RNs and nursing students …

Design, Characterization, And Simulation Of A 2d Dual-Rail Quantum Processor, Diego Barrutia
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Bosonic systems, such as three-dimensional (3D) λ/4 coaxial cavities and two-dimensional (2D) λ/2 coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators, are quantum harmonic oscillators that encode information in phase space, offering a hardware-efficient route toward quantum error correction and simulation in superconducting circuits. In this thesis, we present the design, characterization, and simulation of a dual-rail processor constructed with a 2D λ/2 coplanar waveguide resonators, demonstrating a percent error between experimental and analytical results within a range of 3.31% - 13.16%. The analytical results exhibit high precision but lower accuracy relative to experimental measurements. By integrating both closed-source and open-source software tools, we …

Relationship Between Opioid Treatment And Nonpharmacological Chronic Pain Management Interventions And Perceived Effectiveness Of Managing Chronic Pain In African American Adults, Bona Eze
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic pain impacts all areas of life for most Americans, but the issue is particularly salient among African Americans (AAs) as they face adverse pain outcomes. There is little understanding of pain management strategies used by AAs to inform pain management recommendations. The purpose of this study, guided by the COM-B model and biopsychosocial theory, was to determine if there were a relationships between opioid treatment and perceived effectiveness of managing chronic pain in AA adults who are 18 years and older as well as between nonpharmacological interventions (physical therapy, chiropractic care, talk therapy, self-management program, yoga, massage) and perceived …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
It is an error of the State to give an instruction to the Grand Jury that is not supported by evidence and which does not address a necessary element, which in this case must be under NRS 172.095(2). The State exceeded its statutory duty in the case at hand and gave the grand jury an instruction on grooming that was improper and prejudicial. As a result, and because the State failed to provide exculpatory evidence, the district court abused its discretion in denying pretrial habeas corpus relief. The petitioned relief is affirmed.
