A growing number of college students are nontraditional learners (age 21–65) who are people of color. These students face unique challenges in a higher education system increasingly shaped by neoliberalism and the ongoing context of institutionalized racism. In Oregon, policymakers have established ambitious goals to address racial disparities in educational attainment. In this study, focus groups and interviews were conducted with 111 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) adult learners in Oregon to better understand their perspectives and experiences in regard to educational and career pathways. Micro quasars are one of the classes of powerful Galactic particle accelerators that emit gamma rays beyond multi-TeV energies. Recently, gamma-ray emission above tens of TeV has been detected from some of these objects. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory has previously reported gamma-ray emission with a median energy of 25 TeV from the micro quasar SS 433, suggesting that gamma-ray binaries can accelerate particles to above 100 TeV inside the jets. With 2,321 days of data and better reconstruction algorithms, the HAWC observatory detected emissions above 20 TeV from two other binaries, V4641 Sagittarii and LS 5039. The V4641 …

Before 2016, the Eskişehir city landfill was an irregular landfill. Since then, it has been transformed into a regulated landfill. This study aimed to investigate the presence of pollution in the landfill drainage area. For this purpose, water samples were collected from the landfill drainage area and the Kadirbey Farm Spring, upstream of the landfill area, during the rainy and dry seasons of 2021. Analyses of the heavy metal content, total dissolved soil (TDS), chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, pH, phenol material content, ammonia nitrogen content, and conductivity were conducted on the samples. Directional derivative-based edge detectors are commonly used to outline the abrupt lateral variations in densities or magnetizations of geologic sources from potential-field datasets. Some subtle traces of faults, lithological contacts, and lineaments can be made more visible on anomaly maps using these algorithms. However, these algorithms generally suffer from common limitations such as blurry edges with low-resolution or faulty boundaries. To minimize these challenges, we proposed a new efficient edge detector that benefits from the hyperbolic tangent function. The demetallation reaction of sulfanyl magnesium(II) porphyrazine with N-ethylphthalimide substituents, followed by remetallation with manganese(II) salts, yields the corresponding manganese(III) derivative (Pz3) with high efficiency. This novel manganese(III) sulfanyl porphyrazine was characterized by HPLC and analyzed using UV-Vis, MS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Electrochemical experiments of Pz3 conducted in dichloromethane revealed electrochemical activity of the new complex due to both manganese and N-ethylphthalimide substituents redox transitions. Subsequently, Pz3 was deposited on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and this hybrid material was then applied to glassy carbon electrodes (GC). Background: Limited treatment options exist for damaged nerves and despite impressive advances in tissue engineering, scientists and clinicians have yet to fully replicate nerve development and recruitment. Innervation is a critical feature for normal organ function. While most organs are innervated prior to birth, a rare example of postnatal nerve recruitment occurs in the natural development of secondary teeth during adolescence. Many animals undergo postnatal shedding of deciduous teeth with development and eruption of secondary teeth, a process requiring recruitment of nerve and vasculature to each tooth pulp for viability. Androgen receptor (AR) overexpression has been identified in gliomas and its stem cells, suggesting that AR plays an important role in tumor carcinogenesis. The prognostic significance of AR overexpression in gliomas remains unknown. AR mRNA expression in gliomas and relevant clinical data were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas databases. AR expression levels were compared across gliomas of different histopathologic grades and molecular subtypes. Kaplan–Meier analyses in patients with different AR expression levels were investigated for the potential prognostic values of AR. Background: A growing body of research supports the role of the microbial communities residing in the digestive system in the host's cognitive functioning. Most of these studies have been focused on the gut microbiome and its association with clinical phenotypes in middle-aged and older adults. BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Past research has highlighted the importance of the relationship between female-specific demographics and traditional risk factors. The present analysis aimed to identify the prevalence of modifiable risk factors in women attending a community cardiovascular health screening.

METHODS: Data collected between 2011 and 2019 were obtained from the Houston HeartReach Registry. KAGRA conducted its first joint observation with GEO 600 for two weeks in April, 2020. We performed two types of all-sky searches and two searches dedicated to gravitational wave signals associated with gamma-ray burst events observed during the run. We did not detect any gravitational wave signals, which was expected given the sensitivity of both detectors at that time. However, we did confirm that several search pipelines used in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaborations worked effectively on the KAGRA data. In this presentation we will report on the data quality of detectors and the search results.

Histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, often mimics the appearance of lung cancer on fludeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans. The “flip-flop fungus,” due to its similar presentation on imaging modalities, can lead to false-positive results and unnecessary invasive testing. We present a 46-year-old male patient with a lung nodule and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on an FDG-PET scan who initially presented with chest discomfort. Histoplasma infection was confirmed through Grocott's methenamine silver (GMS) stains on bronchoscopy-guided biopsy specimens. An analysis of additional cases from the literature highlighted the diverse clinical presentations and outcomes associated with this condition that may be …

Each tenant argued the building had seven residential units—one apartment and six SROs—making it subject to rent stabilization. The lower court agreed with the tenants, granting summary judgment due to the landlord's failure to serve required statutory termination notices. The Appellate Term affirmed, ruling that the building’s rent stabilization status depends on the units’ function as residences, regardless of their legality under a certificate of occupancy.

The cAMP cascade is increasingly recognized to transduce physiological effects locally through spatially limited cAMP gradients. However, little is known about how adenylyl cyclase enzymes that initiate cAMP gradients are localized. Here we address this question in physiologically relevant striatal neurons and investigate how AC localization impacts downstream signaling function. We show that the major striatal AC isoforms are differentially sorted between ciliary and extraciliary domains of the plasma membrane, and that one isoform, AC9, is uniquely concentrated in endosomes. We identify key sorting determinants in the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain responsible for isoform-specific localization. We further show that AC9-containing endosomes …

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an invasive treatment option for patients suffering from chronic low-back pain (cLBP). It is an effective treatment that has been shown to reduce pain and increase the quality of life in patients. However, the activation of pain processing regions of cLBP patients receiving SCS has not been assessed using objective, quantitative functional imaging techniques. The purpose of the present study was to compare quantitative resting-state (rs)-fMRI and arterial spin labeling (ASL) measures between SCS patients and healthy controls and to correlate clinical measures with quantitative multimodal imaging indices in pain regions.

Background: Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is an episodic, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by fluctuations in mood state and energy. It affects more than 1% of the world’s population. ntroduction: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an autosomal recessive ectopic calcification disorder clinically affecting the skin, eyes, and vascular system. Most cases of PXE are caused by inactivating pathogenic variants in the ABCC6 gene encoding a hepatic transmembrane efflux transporter, which facilitates the extracellular release of ATP, the precursor of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a potent endogenous inhibitor of calcification. Pathogenic variants in GGCX, encoding γ-glutamyl carboxylase required for activation of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors as well as matrix Gla protein (MGP) and Gla-rich protein (GRP), two inhibitors of ectopic calcification, have also been reported to cause cutaneous changes like those seen …

Background: Women with high-risk breast lesions, such as atypical hyperplasia (AH) or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), have a 4- to tenfold increased risk of breast cancer compared to women with non-proliferative breast disease. Despite high-quality data supporting chemoprevention, uptake remains low. Interventions are needed to break down barriers.

Methods: The parent trial, MiCHOICE, is a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness and implementation of patient and provider decision support tools to improve informed choice about chemoprevention among women with AH or LCIS. For this pre-implementation analysis, 25 providers participated in semi-structured interviews prior to accessing decision support tools. …

Despite significant progress made in understanding NEC pathogenesis over the last 50 years, the inability of current definitions to discriminate the various pathophysiological processes underlying NEC has led to an umbrella term that limits clinical and research progress. In this mini review, we provide a historical perspective on how NEC definitions and pathogenesis have evolved to our current understanding of NEC endotypes. We also discuss how artificial intelligence-based approaches are influencing our knowledge of risk-factors, classification and prognosis of NEC and other neonatal intestinal injury phenotypes.

This research explores the optimization of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) strategies for offshore wind farms using a sophisticated O&M simulator built on the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. By integrating real-world constraints such as vessel availability and weather conditions, the study assesses O&M logistics’ impacts on wind farm availability, energy production, and overall costs across different scenarios in the Celtic Sea.
