We characterize the performance of our computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) – a space-based observatory for MeV to TeV gamma-ray astronomy – and its smaller, balloon-borne prototype, the Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT), whose scientific focus will be the detection of MeV transients. These instruments observe scintillation light from multiple Compton scattering and photoabsorption of gamma-ray photons across a series of CsI detector layers. We infer the incident angle of each photon's first scattering to localize its source direction to a Compton ring about the vector defined by its …

The Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) is a planned space-based observatory designed to localize MeV to TeV transients such as gamma-ray bursts in real time using onboard computational hardware. The Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT) is a prototype high-altitude balloon mission scheduled to fly during the 2025–26 season. Gamma-ray-induced scintillations in CsI tiles will be captured by perpendicular arrays of optical fibers running across both tile surfaces, as well as SiPM-based edge detectors to improve light collection and calorimetry. An information-theoretic data mining method is employed to analyze categorical spatiotemporal Geographic Information System land use data. Reconstructability Analysis (RA) is a maximum-entropy-based data modeling methodology that works exclusively with discrete data such as those in the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The NLCD is organized into a spatial (raster) grid and data are available in a consistent format for every five years from 2001 to 2021. Disparities In Stage At Diagnosis Among Hispanic Patients With Gastric Cancer In The United States, Antoine Jeri-Yabar, Liliana Vittini-Hernandez, Renzo Aller-Rojas, Francisco Arias-Reyes, Sirish Dharmapuri

Simple Summary

This study investigates racial disparities in the stage of gastric cancer at diagnosis and overall survival among different racial groups using data from the SEER database (2018–2021). The retrospective cohort study of 18,984 patients found that Hispanics are 19% more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of gastric cancer compared to non-Hispanics. Additionally, both Hispanics and Black patients showed poorer overall survival compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. The disparities are attributed to factors such as healthcare access, insurance coverage, language barriers, and preventive health service utilization. Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder of chronically abnormal ovarian function and hyperandrogenism (abnormally elevated androgen levels). It is manifested by irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovaries, acne, excess unwanted hair growth, obesity, etc. PCOS can affect a female’s fertility. The global prevalence of PCOS varies from 5% to 18%, with an average prevalence of 276·4 cases per 100,000 people in Europe. The prevalence of PCOS in India ranges from 3.7 to 22.5% depending on the population studied. The great upsurge of witch trials in early modern Europe remains a historical puzzle. Popularly known as the “witch craze”, this eruption of persecution is puzzling because belief in witchcraft had existed for centuries, but large-scale witch-hunting appeared rather abruptly, spread widely, and was remarkably brutal in comparison with the past. We define a theory of ideational diffusion to describe the general process of the emergence and spread of a new idea along with its prescribed behavioral change, in this case the adoption of witch-hunting. In 1989, the first prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs were discovered by Saudi Aramco in the highly porous and permeable friable continental sandstones (Unayzah reservoirs) and shallow marine carbonates (Khuff reservoirs) of the Paleozoic successions in south of Riyadh, Central Arabia. These successions were strongly affected by tectonic movements (Caledonian and Hercynian orogenesis) and Early and Late Paleozoic Gondwana glaciations. Therefore, some sections were fully eroded or significantly reduced in their thickness. The sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the Paleozoic successions helped to understand the depositional environments and regional distribution of the source, reservoir and cap rock facies in an improved palynologic studies. …

An interactive velocity analysis method is introduced in this paper and its efficacy is tested on various walkaway vertical seismic profile (WVSP) modeled data sets. In WVSP surveys, interval velocity profiles are determined fairly accurately along the VSP borehole using first break travel time picks from the zero-offset VSP (ZVSP) data. However the accuracy of these vertical velocities fade away quickly as the source distance (offset) from the VSP borehole increases due to possible horizontal changes in the geology or dips of the horizons. Study Design: Cross-sectional survey.

Objectives: Injury classifications are important tools to identify fracture patterns, guide treatment-decisions and aid to identify optimal treatment plans. The AO Spine-DGOU Osteoporotic Fracture (OF) classification system was developed, and the aim of this study was to assess the reliability of this new classification system.

Methods: 23 Members of the AO Spine Knowledge Forum Trauma participated in the validation process. Participants were asked to rate 33 cases according to the OF classification at 2 time points, 4 weeks apart (assessment 1 and 2). Background: Although group work is increasingly used in STEM courses and may lead to improved academic outcomes, there is evidence that some implementations of group work may lead to unintended barriers for certain students’ learning. Despite the growing number of neurodivergent undergraduate students, there is limited research on neurodivergent students’ experiences with group work in STEM courses. Anhedonia, or a deficit in the liking, wanting, and seeking of rewards, is typically assessed via self-reported "in-the-moment" emotional and motivational responses to reward stimuli and activities. Given that mental imagery is known to evoke emotion and motivational responses, we conducted two studies to investigate the relationship between mental imagery use and self-reported anhedonia. Patients diagnosed with early-stage cancers have a substantially higher chance of survival than those with late-stage diseases. However, the option for early cancer screening is limited, with most cancer types lacking an effective screening tool. Here we report a miRNA-based blood test for multi-cancer early detection based on examination of serum microRNA microarray data from cancer patients and controls. First, a large multi-cancer training set that included 1,408 patients across 7 cancer types and 1,408 age- and gender-matched non-cancer controls was used to develop a 4-microRNA diagnostic model using 10-fold cross-validation. Social media influencers can grow their number of followers by endorsing products that are authentic for their social media persona or, alternatively, monetize their followers by endorsing a wider variety of products. We develop a dynamic model in which an influencer continuously decides whether to be authentic as she balances increasing awareness with generating revenues from sponsored posts. We derive conditions in which the influencer is authentic during an early growth phase, but she becomes inauthentic once a large enough fraction of potential followers are aware of her. In this study, amine-functionalized and Ni(II)-immobilized mesoporous silica materials were synthesized. This research aimed to synthesize mesoporous silica based on rice husk ash functionalized with amine and immobilized with Ni(II). The activity of amine-functionalized and Ni(II)-immobilized mesoporous silica materials was studied for the acetylation of benzyl alcohol with acetic anhydride as the acetylating agent. First, mesoporous silica was synthesized using rice husk ash using the sol–gel method, followed by amine functionalization using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and Ni(II) immobilization through ultrasonic treatment. Mechanoresponsive color-changing materials that can reversibly and resiliently change color in response to mechanical deformation are highly desirable for diverse modern technologies in optics, sensors, and robots; however, such materials are rarely achieved. Here, a fatigue-resistant mechanoresponsive color-changing hydrogel (FMCH) is reported that exhibits reversible, resilient, and predictable color changes under mechanical stress. At its undeformed state, the FMCH remains dark under a circular polariscope; upon uniaxial stretching of up to six times its initial length, it gradually shifts its color from black, to gray, yellow, and purple. Zygomycetous fungal infections pose an emerging medical threat among individuals with compromised immunity and metabolic abnormalities. Our pathophysiological understanding of these infections, particularly the role of fungal cell walls in growth and immune response, remains limited. Here we conducted multidimensional solid-state NMR analysis to examine cell walls in five Mucorales species, including key mucormycosis causative agents like Rhizopus and Mucor species. We show that the rigid core of the cell wall primarily comprises highly polymorphic chitin and chitosan, with minimal quantities of β-glucans linked to a specific chitin subtype. Background: Breast cancer outcomes are worse among Black women in the U.S. compared to White women. While extensive research has focused on risk factors contributing to breast cancer; the role of genomic elements in health disparities between these racial groups remains unclear. This study aims to identify genomic variants and socioeconomic status (SES) determinants influencing racial disparities in breast cancer survival through multiple mediation analyses. Methods: Our investigation is based on the NIH-supported All of Us (AoU) program and analyzes 7452 female participants with malignant tumors of breast, including 5073 with genomic data.
