Sound, Gentrification, And Ephethereal Justice, Allie Martin

Dartmouth Scholarship

Gentrification transforms neighborhoods and erodes intimacies, creating spaces of displacement and exclusivity. Where, then, is justice in a gentrifying city? In this article, I argue that sound offers an opening into a fleeting—“ephethereal”—justice; that is, a portmanteau of ephemeral and ethereal. This is a justice that is short lived and ephemeral, and yet offers an impression of something not of this world, something ethereal. Drawing on my work on listening to gentrification in Washington, DC, I consider how sound invokes this ephethereal justice and offers us the tools to explore the temporal and spatial contours of liberation.

The American Bar Association now requires law schools to provide "education to law students on bias, cross-cultural competency, and racism." But how can a law professor navigate these challenges in the current cultural climate fraught with polarizing divisiveness? In this present-day charged atmosphere, law students may be particularly sensitive to statements they perceive as offensive and may seek accountability for such remarks. Implicit bias and micro-aggressions can reveal biases that are unconscious and unintentional. How then can a law professor make students feel comfortable discussing these important and relevant topics in class?

In September 1794, the French army, after conquering much of Belgium and the Netherlands, marched into Aachen. This early campaign of military conquest turned into the first laboratory for the systematic plunder of cultural assets enacted by various post-revolutionary and Napoleonic regimes from 1794 to 1815. Works of art “liberated” from the tyranny of aristocratic and religious ownership were earmarked for the newly opened Musée Central des Arts (now the Louvre) to showcase the enlightened cultural supremacy of Paris. Past research on subjective well-being (SWB) in Western society and China has revealed various contributing factors. This study conducted a series of interviews with Chinese urban residents to systematically analyze those factors based on Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological System Theory. The results revealed that 5 layers, 23 factors, and 55 elements, many of which had distinct Chinese characteristics, contributed to Chinese urban residents’ SWB. The Top Model of SWB, visualized as a spinning top or gyroscope, showcased the interdependent layers of factors impacting Chinese urban residents’ SWB. This study presents a novel reanalysis dataset of dead fuel moisture content (DFMC) across California from 2000 to 2020 at a 2 km resolution. Utilizing a data assimilation system that integrates a simplified time-lag fuel moisture model with 10-h fuel moisture observations from remote automated weather stations (RAWS) allowed predictions of 10-h fuel moisture content by our method with a mean absolute error of 0.03 g/g compared to the widely used Nelson model, with a mean absolute error prediction of 0.05 g/g. For context, the values of DFMC in California are commonly between 0.05 g/g and 0.30 g/g. The presented …

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of shiftwork among young adults poses significant health risks, primarily due to its disruptive effects on sleep, nutrition and physical activity. Addressing these risks necessitates the development of tailored, evidence-based resources to support these key health behaviours. Participatory research approaches, engaging those with relevant lived experience (i.e., co-design) are a novel and effective approach in developing these resources. Language identity, an understudied factor, can influence isolation and discrimination, leading to disparities in well-being and mental health among immigrants. This study aims to investigate the role of language identity on structural racism and discrimination among 1.5 generation Asian/Asian American immigrants in a diverse U.S. state. We developed a three-step sequential approach: Stage 1—qualitative analysis (1A, focus group discussion; 1B, in-depth interviews); Stage 2—quantitative analysis (2A, language identity measurement scale; 2B, cross-sectional online survey; 2C, multivariate multiple linear regression); Stage 3—another round of qualitative analysis (3A, follow-up in-depth chronological interviews). Food allergies are associated with stress and anxiety in college students. This research study aims to explore the findings of students with known food allergies and their perspectives on how one large urban university campus dining service accommodates their dietary needs. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, and a non-probability, purposive sampling was used for a campus-wide online self-reported survey from August to October 2023. The survey included twenty close-ended and open-ended questions about the student’s food allergy attitudes, self-management, and barriers to on-campus dining services. This project utilizes artificial intelligence Agents to generate high-fidelity synthetic data for Major League Baseball hitters and their statistics over a single 162 game season. The AI evaluates each player based on a five-tool scale, comparing their abilities to one another. Finally, optimization techniques are applied to select an optimal set of thirteen hitters (half of a full MLB roster of twenty-six players), maximizing overall performance while adhering to a specified salary cap. Two developments have transformed the detection of corporate fraud in the last decade: the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Whistleblower Bounty Program (WBP) and the rise of activist short sellers. The WBP offers up financial bounties to individuals who bring forward actionable information about securities fraud. Activist shorts conduct due diligence to identify overvalued public companies, take short positions, reveal the negative information, and then enjoy trading profits if and when the stock tanks. Considered separately, these institutions are widely regarded as socially valuable innovations that help deter fraud.

The Dormant Commerce Clause jurisprudence of the United States has been one of the most widely criticized doctrines of American constitutional law. However, most of these criticisms fail to consider the economic implications of the Dormant Commerce Clause, namely the benefits this doctrine has provided in facilitating internal free trade amongst the states. This Comment argues that the Dormant Commerce Clause has given American courts an effective tool to promote interstate free trade by removing state regulations that create non-tariff barriers to trade. Enhancing Self-Compassion: An Empirical Comparison Of Expressive Writing And Meditation, Samantha De Souza

Self-compassion interventions show promise in reducing stress and enhancing self-compassion among college students, a population uniquely vulnerable to high stress. Two studies were conducted to explore the impact of self-compassion practices (i.e., expressive writing and meditations). Using a within group study design, Study 1 investigated whether a prewriting task designed to induce a self-compassionate mindset could enhance the effects of a self-compassion meditation. Results showed that when participants (n = 35) completed the prewriting task before the meditation, they reported significantly higher levels of state self-compassion compared to when they were in the meditation-only group, as predicted (p = .03, …

Macitentan is a dual endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA) approved for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). SOPRANO evaluated the efficacy and safety of macitentan versus placebo in pulmonary hypertension (PH) patients after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. SOPRANO was a phase 2, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study. Patients with an LVAD implanted within the prior 90 days who had persistent PH (i.e., mean pulmonary arterial pressure ≥25 mmHg, pulmonary artery wedge pressure [PAWP] ≤18 mmHg, and pulmonary vascular resistance [PVR] >3 Wood units [WU]) were randomized (1:1) to macitentan 10 mg or placebo once daily for 12 weeks. Starting the paper, I give historical context on the movement including the founder Andre Breton, surrealist painters that either had a significant contribution or interesting way to create, themes explored, and techniques used. The surrealist photographers I researched are Man Ray, Angus McBean, and Claude Cahun. In the summer of 2024, I participated in research under Dr. Wolfgang Kerzendorf, a professor at Michigan State University, and Dr. Joshua Shields, a postdoctoral researcher who works with Dr. Kerzendorf. Dr. Shields developed the open-source code STARDIS, which used photosphere models from databases such as MARCS to generate stellar spectra; within STARDIS, the elemental abundance of these stars can be adjusted. My objective was to use STARDIS to adjust generated spectra and compare the results to observed absorption spectrum from Galactic Center Stars to verify if certain stars contained an abnormal amount of certain heavy elements, such as Scandium. …

Pediatric oncology patients require consistent, specialized care that is strongly supported by parental advocacy. Advocacy is critical for ensuring timely interventions, articulating the child’s needs, and providing emotional support during hospitalization. However, some pediatric patients face gaps in advocacy when parents are unable to be consistently present due to unavoidable obligations, such as work commitments or caregiving responsibilities for other children. This lack of consistent parental presence can impact the quality of care, potentially causing delays in treatment and unmet health needs (Brady et al., 2020).
