Efficacy Of An Online Mindfulness Training For Adolescents: A Pilot Study, Gus C. Salazar
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Adolescence represents a period in a person’s life where they develop skills and competencies necessary to flourish in the physical, social, emotional, and academic areas of their lives. Additionally, adolescents are facing unprecedented social and mental health challenges. As such, it is important to equip adolescents with tools to help them succeed. Mindfulness is one resource which has been shown to improve symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety, while also improving mindfulness ability and overall well-being. Aims: The purpose of this study was to conduct a pilot study to examine the efficacy of a self-guided, internet-delivered mindfulness training with …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) disproportionately impacts Black Americans, who are three times more likely to develop AD. While heart-healthy diets have shown potential in reducing AD risk, research on adapted dietary interventions for Black American communities remains limited. This pilot study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted brain healthy diet intervention (MIND + SOUL) and explored changes in cardiometabolic risk and cognition. Twenty-nine participants completed the 12-week intervention, which included culturally tailored health education, cooking classes, health coaching, and groceries. Feasibility was assessed by attendance and retention rates, while acceptability was measured by two questionnaires. Participants had a mean …
A Trans-Theoretical Systematization Of Clinical Interventions Based On Dynamical Systems Research (Dsr), Giulio De Felice, David Pincus
A Trans-Theoretical Systematization Of Clinical Interventions Based On Dynamical Systems Research (Dsr), Giulio De Felice, David Pincus
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The scientific literature focused on the categorization of therapists’ interventions in clinical sessions, and their effects on patients, is not very extensive and often autoreferential. The most relevant findings clearly show the eclecticism of clinicians, grounding only 10–14% of their interventions on the specific theoretical approach to which they belong. Despite that, a trans-theoretical systematization of clinical interventions is lacking. The present work aims to verify the feasibility of a trans-theoretical categorization of clinical interventions based on Dynamical Systems Research in psychotherapy (DSR). For this purpose, the authors present the results of three literature reviews. The first sections of this …
Psychosocial Influences On African American Men Who Viewed Videos Of Police Killing Unarmed African American Men, Shaterrica Denae Maloney
Psychosocial Influences On African American Men Who Viewed Videos Of Police Killing Unarmed African American Men, Shaterrica Denae Maloney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The strained relationship between the African American community and law enforcement is not a new phenomenon. However, these interactions have become a focal point in research given the current use of smartphones and other technologies that capture video footage of these interactions, including those that result in the fatality of an African American male. The purpose and research questions of this phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African American men and how their psychosocial development is influenced by watching videos of unarmed African American men being killed by police. The research questions were: What is the experience of African …
Gender Ideology And Gender Equality Policy Adoption, Wendell Christopher Lewis
Gender Ideology And Gender Equality Policy Adoption, Wendell Christopher Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gender-based violence threatens the social and economic security of countries. Gender equality policies, which address the ideological and material relations of gender equality that support gender-based violence, are being stymied by antigender coalitions. Little is known of the concept called gender ideology used by this coalition to facilitate policy intractability of gender equality policies. This mixed-method study was intended to fill the theoretical and methodological gaps in the literature using the narrative policy framework to explore the concept of gender ideology and policy intractability during the National Gender Policy debate in Trinidad and Tobago between 2010-2018. The research questions focused …
Military To Civilian Life: Transition And Reintegration Experiences Of Army Wives, Marquita Crudup
Military To Civilian Life: Transition And Reintegration Experiences Of Army Wives, Marquita Crudup
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have identified that military-to-civilian transition (MCT) and civilian reintegration is a difficult time for military spouses; as veterans receive transitional assistance and benefits to assist with adjustment, the nonveteran family leaves behind a community of supportive peers and resources. Military spouses feel disconnected and isolated and lack access to service in their civilian community. In this generic qualitative study, the transactional model of stress and coping was used to explore the participants’ appraisal of events during MCT and civilian reintegration, and the coping resources used to address them. Purposeful selection was used in recruiting 18 female participants with no …

How Can Nature-Based Early Childhood Learning Environments Support Whole Child Development?, Greta Miller
How Can Nature-Based Early Childhood Learning Environments Support Whole Child Development?, Greta Miller
Graduate Teacher Education
Learning experiences and environments have a profound influence on young children’s learning and development (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2022; Zosh et al., 2022). When young children are afforded inadequate opportunities to engage with and explore a nature-based outdoor learning environment, children’s growth, learning, and development can be negatively impacted (Louv, 2008; Suttie, 2016). Current research and literature regarding how nature-based early learning environments support whole child development was analyzed. Research indicated that when children spent more time exploring nature, children had improved learning outcomes (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2022). Outdoor play promoted creativity, curiosity, and critical …
The True Legacy Of Stono: How The Stono Rebellion Of 1739 Changed South Carolina, David S. Wilkie
The True Legacy Of Stono: How The Stono Rebellion Of 1739 Changed South Carolina, David S. Wilkie
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Most of the research surrounding South Carolina’s Stono Slave Rebellion revolves around the planning and execution of the rebellion, the motivation of the slaves that chose to participate in the rebellion, and the immediate response of white slaveowners to the rebellion. Conversely, my research focuses on the long-term impact of the rebellion on the institution of slavery in South Carolina. Over the course of my research, I have explored the impact that the rebellion had on South Carolina slaveholders and lawmakers. I argue that the Stono Rebellion generated a fear response among whites in South Carolina that led to the …

Qualified But Not Good Enough: The Perspectives And Barriers From Black Women In Educational Leadership Roles, Jeanetta Searcy-Cooper
Doctorate in Education
From teachers to principals to superintendents, Black women continue to struggle for opportunities to lead in the educational setting. This qualitative, phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of eight Black women who achieved educational leadership positions in K-12 education to understand how their race and gender have informed their personal lives and professional journeys. Participants were obtained via a convenience sample and individually interviewed on four main topics: their perceptions of the impact of race and gender on the availability of contemporary educational leadership positions, their own experiences attempting to secure leadership roles, how stereotypes and biased ideology have affected …
Therapeutic Approaches To Modulate The Immune Microenvironment In Gliomas, Andreas Sarantopoulos, Chibawanye Ene, Elisa Aquilanti
Therapeutic Approaches To Modulate The Immune Microenvironment In Gliomas, Andreas Sarantopoulos, Chibawanye Ene, Elisa Aquilanti
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Immunomodulatory therapies, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, have drastically changed outcomes for certain cancer types over the last decade. Gliomas are among the cancers that have seem limited benefit from these agents, with most trials yielding negative results. The unique composition of the glioma immune microenvironment is among the culprits for this lack of efficacy. In recent years, several efforts have been made to improve understanding of the glioma immune microenvironment, aiming to pave the way for novel therapeutic interventions. In this review, we discuss some of the main components of the glioma immune microenvironment, including macrophages, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, neutrophils …

In this nonpayment proceeding, the tenant moved to dismiss due to lack of an active lease. The court dismissed the case, agreeing that under Second Department precedent, a nonpayment proceeding requires a valid rental agreement at the commencement of the action. Since the rent-stabilized lease last renewed in 2015, no active agreement existed at filing, and the landlord's claim of an implied agreement based on subsidy recertifications was insufficient. Other issues raised by the tenant were dismissed as moot.

All Decisions
The pro se tenant filed an Order to Show Cause seeking restoration to possession after a default judgment led to eviction. The landlord's counsel failed to appear on time, exhibiting inappropriate behavior when contacted by court staff. As a result, the court granted the tenant's motion by default, vacating the judgment and warrant of eviction, and ordered the tenant's immediate restoration to possession. The court set a later date for the landlord's counsel to present cause for avoiding sanctions and possible referral to a disciplinary committee due to his conduct.
Efsher, Llc V. Hall
All Decisions
The landlord initiated a holdover proceeding against the tenant, alleging various acts of nuisance. The tenant requested a bill of particulars and, when that was denied, moved for discovery. The landlord argued that discovery was unnecessary in a summary proceeding and that the tenant should be aware of his own conduct. The court granted the tenant's motion in part, allowing discovery of specific information necessary to prepare a defense, while limiting the disclosure of the identities of complaining neighbors to those the landlord intends to call as witnesses.

Background: Neoadjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved survival outcomes compared with chemotherapy in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the impact of actionable genomic alterations (AGAs) on the efficacy of neoadjuvant ICIs remains unclear. We report the influence of AGAs on treatment failure (TF) in patients with resectable NSCLC treated with neoadjuvant ICIs.
Methods: Tumor molecular profiles were obtained from patients with stage I-IIIA resectable NSCLC (American Joint Committee on Cancer seventh edition) treated with either neoadjuvant nivolumab (N, n=23) or nivolumab+ipilimumab (NI, n=21) followed by surgery in a previously reported phase-2 randomized study (NCT03158129). The development and progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) depend on genetic abnormalities and on the immunosuppressive microenvironment. We have explored the possibility that genetic drivers might be responsible for the immune cell dysregulation that shapes the protumor microenvironment. We performed a transcriptome analysis of coding and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) during leukemia progression in the Rag2-/-γc-/- MEC1-based xenotransplantation model. The DLEU2/miR-16 locus was found downmodulated in monocytes/macrophages of leukemic mice. To validate the role of this cluster in the tumor immune microenvironment, we generated a mouse model that simultaneously mimics the overexpression of hTCL1 and the germline deletion of the …

Synthesis Of Neuronal Network Dynamics For Optimal Stimulus Encoding And Retention, Bethanna Thompson
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A central goal in neuroscience is to understand the relationship between the structure and activity of the brain and the resulting experience of thought and behavior that the brain underpins. Within this goal is the specific study of working memory: the process of storing, managing, and integrating incoming sensory information in the context of ongoing tasks. The process of working memory is foundational to higher cognition and reasoning, determining how we comprehend and interact with the world around us. The neural circuits responsible for working memory are seemingly able to store and process afferent stimuli with other recent or relevant …

Subjective well-being (SWB) is often described as being U-shaped over adulthood, declining to a midlife slump and then improving thereafter. Improved SWB in later adulthood has been considered a paradox given age-related declines in health and social losses. While SWB has mostly been studied in high-income countries, it remains largely unexplored in rural subsistence populations lacking formal institutions that reliably promote social welfare. Here, we evaluate the age profile of SWB among three small-scale subsistence societies (n = 468; study 1), forest users from 23 low-income countries (n = 6987; study 2), and Tsimane’ horticulturalists (n = …

Traditional cryptographic methods often need complex designs that require substantial memory and battery power, rendering them unsuitable for small handheld devices. As the prevalence of these devices continues to rise, there is a pressing need to develop smart, memory-efficient cryptographic protocols that provide both high speed and robust security. Current solutions, primarily dependent on dynamic permutations, fall short in terms of encryption and decryption speeds, the cryptographic strength, and the memory efficiency. Consequently, the evolution of lightweight cryptographic algorithms incorporating randomised substitution properties is imperative to meet the stringent security demands of handheld devices effectively. In this paper, we present …
