Core Concepts: Views From Physiology And Neuroscience, Jennifer E. Schaefer, Joel Michael

Biology Faculty Publications

Core concepts are “big ideas” that are central to a discipline, provide frameworks of understanding for disciplinary content, and aid student transfer of learning. Core concept lists have been developed for increasing numbers of higher education STEM disciplines. This mini-review uses physiology and neuroscience core concepts as examples to inform core concept pedagogies in these and other disciplines. The article reviews the development of physiology and neuroscience core concepts and compares the resulting concept lists. It then provides suggestions or “lessons learned” for educators and researchers who wish to utilize core concept pedagogies or who wish to develop core concepts …

Calm Mid-Century Playlist, Charlene Muyargas-Duque

Illustration Student Work

This illustration is a cover for a mid-century music playlist. Inspired by old jazz vinyl covers and Rene Gruau‘s fashion illustrations, it has a plain cream background with a thick pink border, mid-century styled typography, and an elegant woman in a turquoise dress. The woman is modeled off of Julie London, a prominent jazz singer from the 1940s to 1960s.

Mitigating The Impact Of Remote Work Challenges On Employee Productivity, Michael Gamble

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Challenges encountered in remote working during and after the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affect the performance and productivity of employees as they are not familiar with remote working strategies. Fabrication And Optimization Of A Silodosin In Situ-Forming Plga Implants For The Treatment Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: In Vitro And In Vivo Study, Eman Gomaa

Nanotechnology Research Centre

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are common in older men, and alpha-adrenoceptor blockers continue to be a key part of managing these symptoms. This study aimed to formulate injectable poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) in situ-forming implants (ISFIs) loaded with silodosin (SLD) to address symptoms associated with BPH. This method, which ensures prolonged therapeutic effects of SLD, is intended to decrease dosing frequency and improve treatment outcomes, leading to better patient adherence. Methods: An appropriate solvent with favorable PLGA solubility, viscosity, and in vitro release profile was selected. Additionally, an I-optimal design was employed as …

The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski Oct 2024

The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper argues that the mode and historical context in which piracy ascended in the Caribbean after the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as the historical interrelation between maritime technology and pirate tactics, coalesced into a diachronic Damocles Sword that resulted in the downfall of piracy in the Golden Age. Sanctioning piratical enterprises as a subconventional maritime strategy displayed a geopolitical reliance on piracy by great powers. However, the depraved treatment conventional sailors received across all major European navies generated a social stratum that eventually bore the Golden Age of Piracy, while simultaneously contributing significantly to British naval …

Beyond The Battlefield: The Social And Legal Status Of Women In Sparta, Kiera Clark Oct 2024

Beyond The Battlefield: The Social And Legal Status Of Women In Sparta, Kiera Clark

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The social and legal status of women in Sparta differed from other ancient societies, as they were afforded more social mobility and rights to ownership of property than their counterparts in places such as Athens. While other ancient Greek societies secluded women in the home, women in Sparta were educated publicly and able to move freely in public. However, it is important to note that there is limited material and textual evidence from Sparta, which leaves much up to interpretation and requires scholars to make assumptions based on the practices of other Greek societies. Further, the majority of sources regarding …
