Mitochondrial Memory: Transgenerational Trauma, Functional Medicine, And Quantum Physics, Rosalynn A. Vega Oct 2024

Mitochondrial Memory: Transgenerational Trauma, Functional Medicine, And Quantum Physics, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Building from Karen Barad’s “diffractive methodological approach” (2007, 71), this article combines Mariella Pandolfi’s notion of the female body as a transgenerational “physiological memoir” (1990, 255) with functional medicine perspectives on mitochondria and advances in quantum physics around “entanglement” to explore a new concept—“mitochondrial memory.” Recent findings in biological research depict a communicating collective of mitochondria distributed across different “human” organs and describe how this collective controls many aspects of human health through epigenetic mechanisms. Since exact copies of mitochondria are inherited through the maternal line, I draw from anthropological theory, functional medicine research, and recent discoveries in physics to …

Exploitation, Gentrification, And Commercialization: The Evolution Of Third Spaces For Marginalized People In Post-Democratization Cape Town, Nicole Overbay

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper explores the impact of high-cost leisure spaces that are emerging in low-income marginalized communities within the Cape Town metropolitan area of South Africa after democratization. The resilience and cultural significance of unregulated third spaces, like shebeens, despite governmental suppression demonstrates the importance of these venues to marginalized South Africans. Through the examination of the gentrification of Bo Kaap and Khayelitsha, this paper argues that the pervasive trend of commercialization (which is supposedly for economic empowerment of said areas), can exclude non-White residents and corrode the generations-long cultural significance created in third spaces. This barrier disproportionately harms Black and …

Selective Pericyte Recruitment To Ec-Lined Tubes, Vessel Assembly Enhancement Through Pericyte Timp-3 Induction, And Pericyte Tbx2 In Capillary Formation And Maturation, Ksenia Marilyn Yrigoin Kaluguina

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Capillaries, the smallest blood vascular networks, are formed by narrow and elongated endothelial cell (EC)-lined tubes with associated pericytes anchored to the abluminal tube surface. Our laboratory demonstrated that dynamic interactions between ECs and pericytes during capillary tube network assembly are required for basement membrane matrix deposition and maturation. We have also shown that key EC-derived factors promote pericyte recruitment, proliferation, and pericyte-induced basement membrane formation during capillary assembly. In the first section, we aim to identify if vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) respond to the same factors and have the same invasive ability as pericytes since they are both …

Rictor, A Mtorc2 Protein, Regulates Lymphatic Valve Formation And Maintenance Through The Akt-Foxo1 Signaling Axis, Richa Banerjee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The lymphatic vasculature maintains tissue fluid homeostasis by absorbing interstitial fluid to form lymph and transporting it back to the bloodstream. Collecting lymphatic vessels have lymphatic valves (LVs) that prevent the retrograde flow of lymph generated by hydrostatic pressure from the blood vasculature. Backflow and accumulation of lymph leads to a lymphatic pathology called lymphedema. This implicates the involvement of defective LVs in the pathogenesis of lymphedema and warrants the study of lymphatic valve development and maintenance. The LVs are formed through a process called mechanotransduction which signals through the intracellular PI3K-AKT pathway in lymphatic endothelial cells. However, the activation …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Background: Collaborative Software Package Registries (SPRs) are an integral part of the software supply chain. Much engineering work synthesizes SPR package into applications. Prior research has examined SPRs for traditional software, such as NPM (JavaScript) and PyPI (Python). Pre-Trained Model (PTM) Registries are an emerging class of SPR of increasing importance, because they support the deep learning supply chain.
Aims: Recent empirical research has examined PTM registries in ways such as vulnerabilities, reuse processes, and evolution. However, no existing research synthesizes them to provide a systematic understanding of the current knowledge. Some of the existing research includes qualitative …

Background: Male sex has been identified as a risk factor for worse COVID-19 outcomes. This sex difference has been mostly attributed to the complex role of sex hormones. Cell surface entry of SARS-CoV-2 is mediated by the transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) which is under transcriptional regulation by androgens. P450 aromatase enzyme converts androgens to estrogens. This study measured concentrations of aromatase enzyme, testosterone, estradiol, and TMPRSS-2 in plasma of hospitalized COVID-19 patients to elucidate the dynamics of sex-linked disparity in COVID-19 and correlate them with disease severity and mortality.

Methods: In this prospective cohort study, a total of 265 …

The choice of appropriate physical quantities to characterize the biological effects of ionizing radiation has evolved over time coupled with advances in scientific understanding. The basic hypothesis in radiation dosimetry is that the energy deposited by ionizing radiation initiates all the consequences of exposure in a biological sample (e.g., DNA damage, reproductive cell death). Physical quantities defined to characterize energy deposition have included dose, a measure of the mean energy imparted per unit mass of the target, and linear energy transfer (LET), a measure of the mean energy deposition per unit distance that charged particles traverse in a medium. The …

Background: One in eight children experience early life stress (ELS), which increases risk for psychopathology. ELS, particularly neglect, has been associated with reduced responsivity to reward. However, little work has investigated the computational specifics of this disrupted reward response - particularly with respect to the neural response to Reward Prediction Errors (RPE) - a critical signal for successful instrumental learning - and the extent to which they are augmented to novel stimuli. The goal of the current study was to investigate the associations of abuse and neglect, and neural representation of RPE to novel and non-novel stimuli.

Shade, Height Of Cut, And Plant Growth Regulator Effects On Bermudagrass And Zoysiagrass Putting Greens, Thomas E. Walton, John Mccalla, Douglas E. Karcher, W. J. Hutchens, Ambika Chandra, Michael D. Richardson

Horticulture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Warm-season turfgrasses, especially hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers × Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy), continue to be widely used on golf course putting greens in tropical and subtropical climates globally and are also gaining popularity in the transition zone region of the United States. Hybrid bermudagrass produces a high-quality putting green surface; however, it has relatively poor shade and cold tolerance. Recently, fine-textured zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) cultivars have been released and may be another potential option for golf course putting greens, especially since zoysiagrass is generally considered more shade tolerant than bermudagrass. “Lazer (DALZ 1308)” zoysiagrass (Zoysia …

Troubleshooting And Diagnostics Of Electronic Computing Devices Using The Object Model Creation Method, Gulmira Shuxratovna Abidova, Asad Xolboy O’Gli Shosalmanov

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

This paper presents a major challenge in fault diagnosis for electronic computing equipment is developing an object model tailored to support diagnostic tasks. Effective fault localization requires establishing a link between the diagnostic process and the object model. This connection should enable direct observation of diagnostic points and organize all potential defect and fault sources to clearly show their impact on each diagnostic point and the relevant parameters. Achieving this necessitates comprehensive information about parameter values, expected variations, and the permissible relationships between network elements that generate these parameters. Therefore, building a robust model is essential to facilitate accurate fault …

Algorithms For Minimizing The Boundary Values Of The Quadratic Quality Criterion Based On Approximation Methods, Yulduz Mukhtarkhodzhaevna Abdurakhmanova Oct 2024

Algorithms For Minimizing The Boundary Values Of The Quadratic Quality Criterion Based On Approximation Methods, Yulduz Mukhtarkhodzhaevna Abdurakhmanova

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

This paper considers approximation methods for solving optimization problems while discussing the possibility to reduce the large amount of calculations. Hence, the approximation range is selected in accordance with the optimal value of the quality indicator. To do this, the upper and lower boundaries are being calculated followed by generating the control sequences that minimize the specified boundaries. The next step is to find an approximate solution. An approximate solution to the dual control problem comes from the problem of optimal control of a linear Gaussian system with a quadratic quality criterion and unknown parameters. For the dual control problem, …

Numerical Simulation Of Gas Flow In A Direct-Flow Cyclone, V.S. Toptalov, S.U. Ganieva, O.M. Flisyuk, Kh.S. Nurmukhamedov

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

A numerical model of gas flow in a direct-flow cyclone of two different configurations is presented. The main task of the simulation was to determine the gas velocity field in the apparatus and analyze the presence of a turbulent wake of the stabilizer swirled, which can have a negative impact on the efficiency of the apparatus. During the study, it was found that when the gas flow is disrupted by the stabilizer of the swirler, a turbulent wake is formed, into which trapped particles can fall. The solution to this problem is to lengthen the stabilizer and increase its diameter. …
