Law Enforcement Agency Practices And Policies For The Investigation Of Child Sex Trafficking: Are Agencies Using Victim-Centered Approaches?, Kimberly J. Mitchell, Jennifer E. O'Brien, Lisa M. Jones, Alli Puchlopek-Adams

Faculty Publications

Over the past decade, efforts have been made to reform the way in which law enforcement responds to child sex trafficking (CST). Law enforcement agencies are being urged or required to use victim-centered approaches that provide exploited youth with support and services. However, researchers have yet to empirically examine law enforcement’s recognition of CST at the agency-level, their arrest practices, or the services that are being offered to CST victims. We have little information about the utilization and effectiveness of various law enforcement agency policies, practices and training programs related to CST. The National Law Enforcement Agency Child Sex Trafficking …

Reforming Nova Scotia's Secure Care Model: Gender Bias And Calls To Action, Abby Metcalf Oct 2024

Reforming Nova Scotia's Secure Care Model: Gender Bias And Calls To Action, Abby Metcalf

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The following paper is a critical analysis of Nova Scotia’s secure care model which is legislated under ss. 55-56 of the Children and Family Services Act. Under these provisions, children who are in the care of the Minister of Community Services or Mi’kmaw Family & Children’s Services of Nova Scotia may be confined against their will at the Wood Street Centre in Truro, Nova Scotia. This paper makes two critical arguments. The first is that the legislation concerning secure care in this province is notably overbroad, leaving children who are in crisis vulnerable to being subjected to what is …

Fighting For Abortion Access In Canada: A Constitutional Analysis, Jordana Borzellino Oct 2024

Fighting For Abortion Access In Canada: A Constitutional Analysis, Jordana Borzellino

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Access to abortion is a controversial matter that creates a labyrinth of polarizing issues. Perspectives on abortion range from anathema to overzealous support, with stakeholders occasionally resorting to legal avenues to control access one way or another. This paper will explore the possibility of protecting and expanding access to abortion through constitutional mechanisms in the Canadian legal landscape. By analyzing Canada's current degree of access, this paper will explain that abortion services for those in need are inadequate. In order to advocate for greater access, this paper examines a multitude of legal tools and doctrines to constitutionally protect access to …

The Potential Impact Of Charter Section 28 On Quebec's Controversial Secularism Law And The Pursuit Of Gender-Equality In Canadian Courts, Nywani Albert Oct 2024

The Potential Impact Of Charter Section 28 On Quebec's Controversial Secularism Law And The Pursuit Of Gender-Equality In Canadian Courts, Nywani Albert

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The Western liberal democratic order, anchored in respect for individual rights and constitutional norms, faces a critical challenge as Quebec follows the pattern of several European nations in enacting laws restricting religious attire. While the Quebec Law 21, “An Act Respecting the Laicity of the State,” is ostensibly neutral, it particularly restricts Muslim women's rights. This paper explores an ongoing, novel legal strategy challenging Quebec's secularism law, focusing on Section 28 of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. While Section 28 mandates gender equality in Charter implementation, its potential remains largely unexplored in the decades since Charter enactment. Drawing …

Prescription Practices, Anti-Psychotics, And Covid-19: An Intersectional Examination Of The Long-Term Care Home Setting In Canada, Olivia Ramos Oct 2024

Prescription Practices, Anti-Psychotics, And Covid-19: An Intersectional Examination Of The Long-Term Care Home Setting In Canada, Olivia Ramos

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Public discourse and concern over the state of long-term care homes in Canada has been ongoing over the last two decades. One of the main sources of these concerns is the off-label prescription of anti-psychotic medications to long-term care home residents. Off-label use of pharmaceuticals is common and can be beneficial in certain contexts, however, there is a risk of anti-psychotics being used as an inappropriate means of managing patients chemically in the long-term care home setting. This paper engages in three lines of inquiry: first, the regulatory landscape of on and off-label prescription in Canada; second, the off-label use …

Nivolumab-Induced Immune Mediated Colitis Localized To The Distal Colon: Seven Years Into Therapy, Christian Nassif, Imad I. Nassif, Mouna Todorov Oct 2024

Nivolumab-Induced Immune Mediated Colitis Localized To The Distal Colon: Seven Years Into Therapy, Christian Nassif, Imad I. Nassif, Mouna Todorov

Student Publications

Nivolumab targets programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and is used in cancer treatment by increasing the immune response. It has rarely been associated with immune-mediated colitis (IMC). We present a 66-year-old man with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma, treated with nivolumab for seven years, who developed tenesmus and mucoid bloody diarrhea. Colonoscopy revealed endoscopic and histopathological ulcerative colitis (UC)-like changes, limited to the distal 25cm of the colon. Although nivolumab-induced IMC resembling UC is a known adverse effect, there are very few reports of nivolumab-induced IMC localized to the distal colon and occurring seven years after treatment initiation.

New Materialism And Public Lands: Opportunities For Human And Nonhuman Interactions At Petroglyph National Monument, Madilynn M. Nolen

Geography ETDs

Petroglyph National Monument (PETR) resides at the intersection of geology, urban development, and environmental preservation. As the site of convergence for these complex systems, this National Park site is an example of what kinds of interactions occur between humans and nonhumans and how these interactions mediate our broader understanding of material world. This project utilizes literature from more-than-human geographies and new materialism to examine how these interactions inform the management strategies of PETR. Through the interviews of 15 Volunteers-in-Parks and a focus group of five PETR employees, this project investigates what nonhuman entities are present on and around the monument, …

Pre-Service Teachers Conceptions Of Equity In Secondary Mathematics Education, Mariah Walton Oct 2024

Pre-Service Teachers Conceptions Of Equity In Secondary Mathematics Education, Mariah Walton

Dissertations

This study investigated how pre-service mathematics teachers (PSMTs) understand equity-based pedagogies and apply equity-based pedagogical methods in their instructional planning. A central goal among educators is improving the academic achievement of racially minoritized groups, such as Black and Latinx students, who are often overlooked by traditional pedagogies. This goal has shaped the foundation of culturally relevant pedagogy and other equity-based teaching approaches. This research study focused on the intersection of equity-based pedagogical methods and secondary mathematics teaching and learning involving PSMTs in the third year of their teacher education program. Through an analysis of a discussion post assignment, a focus …

Integrating Risk And Vulnerability: Exploring A Unified Model For Supply Chain Resiliency, William G. Cook Oct 2024

Integrating Risk And Vulnerability: Exploring A Unified Model For Supply Chain Resiliency, William G. Cook

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The world has entered an era of retreating globalization, mounting geo-political tensions, rising protectionism, and increasing focus on the fragility of complex supply chains. The negative impacts of supply chain disruptions have been increasingly documented since the turn of the century. Given the global scale of recent disruptions, supply chain resiliency has become a national imperative. The Global Financial Crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and other major disruptive events demonstrate the active role of government in mitigating damage, the enduring effects of regulation, and the resultant re-evaluation of supply chain strategies by the private and public sectors. In this environment, supply …

A Phenotypic Characterization Of Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteremia Clinical Isolates, Sara Dj Daniels Oct 2024

A Phenotypic Characterization Of Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteremia Clinical Isolates, Sara Dj Daniels

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a human pathogen of serious concern because of its ability to cause serious and wide-ranging disease. Of particular concern is the ability of S. aureus to cause bacteremia (SAB), allowing the bacteria to disseminate and spread to various organs. This study addressed this issue through the phenotypic characterization of two methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates taken from patients with sustained complicated bacteremia at Tampa General Hospital, referred to as SA1097 and SA1098. A battery of phenotypic tests was conducted on these strains, including a growth curve, hemolysis and proteolysis screenings, cytotoxicity assays using human neutrophils, blood …

86-02 Forest Parkway, Llc V. Rojas

All Decisions

The landlord initiated a non-payment holdover proceeding against the rent-stabilized tenant. The tenant asserted an affirmative defense of fraudulent overcharges. The landlord moved to dismiss the defense and for summary judgment. The court denied the motion, finding that the tenant had raised a colorable claim of fraud and that the landlord had not met its burden for summary judgment. The court held that the tenant's allegations of fraudulent overcharges, including unexplained rent increases and false representations about improvements, were sufficient to warrant further investigation. The court distinguished this case from previous decisions that required a more explicit intent to deregulate, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Certain health-related risk factors require legal interventions. Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) are collaborations between clinics and lawyers that address these health-harming legal needs (HHLNs) and have been shown to improve health and reduce utilization.

Objective: The objective of this study is to explore the impact, barriers, and facilitators of MLP implementation in primary care clinics.

Methods: A qualitative design using a semistructured interview assessed the perceived impact, barriers, and facilitators of an MLP, among clinicians, clinic and MLP staff, and clinic patients. Open AI software (otter.ai) was used to transcribe interviews, and NVivo was used to code the data. Braun …

Insects All Around Us: A Four-Session Bug Club Lesson Plan For Grades 3-5 Covering The Biology And Importance Of Insects In Nebraska, Carolyn Almonte Oct 2024

Insects All Around Us: A Four-Session Bug Club Lesson Plan For Grades 3-5 Covering The Biology And Importance Of Insects In Nebraska, Carolyn Almonte

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Insects are often overlooked in science curricula when talking about conservation due to the surrounding fear and disgust regarding insects. This disgust not only permeates the mindsets of students, but also teachers, which leads to a hesitance to incorporate an insect-based curriculum or club into a lesson. In response to this, I have created a four-session club curriculum that can be used across four two hour long sessions spread out across four weeks. The goals of this club are: to explain the key traits of insects and arthropods, differentiating the two groups; to explain and define the basic stages of …

Leveraging Large Language Models For Enhancing Literature-Based Discovery, Ikbal Taleb, Alramzana Nujum Navaz, Mohamed Adel Serhani

All Works

The exponential growth of biomedical literature necessitates advanced methods for Literature-Based Discovery (LBD) to uncover hidden, meaningful relationships and generate novel hypotheses. This research integrates Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly transformer-based models, to enhance LBD processes. Leveraging LLMs’ capabilities in natural language understanding, information extraction, and hypothesis generation, we propose a framework that improves the scalability and precision of traditional LBD methods. Our approach integrates LLMs with semantic enhancement tools, continuous learning, domain-specific fine-tuning, and robust data cleansing processes, enabling automated analysis of vast text and identification of subtle patterns. Empirical validations, including scenarios on the effects of garlic on …

Confronting The War On International Law In The United States, Rebecca Ingber Oct 2024

Confronting The War On International Law In The United States, Rebecca Ingber

Online Publications

Harold Hongju Koh’s The National Security Constitution in the 21st Century is a code red threat assessment of the state of public law in America today. True to Koh’s nature, he does not leave us without hope; rather he devotes a sizeable portion of the book to calls for reform, from the legal frameworks governing war powers and intelligence to the division of labor in the national security legal bureaucracy plodding away within the deepest (secure) chambers of the executive branch itself.

Identification And Characterization Of Resistance To Meloidogyne Enterolobii And M. Incognita In Sweetpotato Genotypes, David M. Galo Espinal Oct 2024

Identification And Characterization Of Resistance To Meloidogyne Enterolobii And M. Incognita In Sweetpotato Genotypes, David M. Galo Espinal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Root-knot nematodes (RKN), Meloidogyne spp., are significant agricultural pests that cause severe economic losses on a wide range of agricultural crops worldwide, including sweetpotato. The economic viability of the sweetpotato industry in the United States is threatened by Meloidogyne enterolobii, which reproduces on sweetpotato cultivars resistant to other RKN species. To address this issue, 69 sweetpotato genotypes were evaluated to identify sources of resistance to M. enterolobii (Me) and M. incognita (Mi). Results showed that twenty-six genotypes were highly resistant to Me and eleven were resistant to Mi, with three genotypes showing resistance to …

Twenty Years Of Microplastic Pollution Research—What Have We Learned?, Richard C. Thompson, Winnie Courtene-Jones, Julien Boucher, Sabine Pahl, Karen Raubenheimer, Albert A. Koelmans

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Twenty years after the first publication that used the term microplastic, we review current understanding, refine definitions, and consider future prospects. Microplastics arise from multiple sources, including tires, textiles, cosmetics, paint, and the fragmentation of larger items. They are widely distributed throughout the natural environment, with evidence of harm at multiple levels of biological organization. They are pervasive in food and drink and have been detected throughout the human body, with emerging evidence of negative effects. Environmental contamination could double by 2040, and wide-scale harm has been predicted. Public concern is increasing, and diverse measures to address microplastic pollution are …

Failure In Fully-Funded Pensions. Voluntary Exchange And Coercion, Mark Hyde, Jonathan Moizer, Jonathan Lean, Sue Farrar

Plymouth Business School

Private pension failure for much of the economics mainstream would be regarded as an artifact of markets that are insufficiently regulated, such that suppliers are able to exploit monopoly advantages, and are free to make serious errors of judgment. Market failure analysis is flawed, however, by its own failure to acknowledge salient elements of the institutional context of private pension provision, which, while it has been regulated according to approved public interest ends, has been prone to suboptimal investment performance. Drawing on classical liberal political economy, an alternative account of private pension failure would emphasize the perverse consequences of state …
