Statues In Plutarch's Lives, Donald Lateiner Oct 2024

Statues In Plutarch's Lives, Donald Lateiner

New England Classical Journal

This article surveys where Plutarch mentions statues in the Lives and how they enrich his biographies. He alludes to statues in introductions, after death in conclusions, and in synkriseis. 1] They describe his subjects’ appearance. 2] They expressed community appreciation. 3] After some Hellenic and Roman honorands lost favor or were assassinated, their images suffered destruction. 4] Several communities compensated victims for ignominy by replacing their statues. 5] Several subjects erected statues as propaganda. 6] Several “heroes” address other men’s statues. 7] Statues or their absence counterpoint deaths and funerals. 8] Statues ironically embody excessive ambition. 9] Subsequent ancient …

Avoid Getting Burned: Lessons From The Mckinley Wildfire In Rural Alaska, Usa, N/A N/A Oct 2024

Avoid Getting Burned: Lessons From The Mckinley Wildfire In Rural Alaska, Usa, N/A N/A

ISER Articles

Background Climate change and continued development in the wildland–urban interface (WUI) have increased risks to property and infrastructure from destructive wildfires. Aims A better understanding of the factors associated with building survival will promote resilience of WUI communities. Methods We studied factors associated with the likelihood that a building burned during the 2019 McKinley fire in the Alaska boreal forest, USA. We examined the potential influence of both ecological or socio-economic factors on building loss. Key results The probability of a building burning was significantly associated (P < 0.001) with a building burning nearby (within 30 m). Having less flammable deciduous cover nearby (within 100 m) improved survival. Buildings with lower value on larger parcels were more likely to burn, as were buildings with larger perimeters. Other important factors associated with burning included the number of buildings both nearby (within 30 m) and within the property parcel boundary. Conclusions Our results suggest that social and ecological factors contribute to building survival, indicating that a comprehensive social-ecological approach would provide the most effective support to WUI communities with wildfire risks. Implications Implications A comprehensive approach that integrates social, economic, and ecological factors is important in understanding building loss in WUI wildfires.

The Pulse Of Connection: Trust And Confidentiality In Internal Coaching Dynamics, Mehdi Ebrahimi Oct 2024

The Pulse Of Connection: Trust And Confidentiality In Internal Coaching Dynamics, Mehdi Ebrahimi

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Internal coaching is growing in popularity across various industries and sectors, either as a standalone resource or in conjunction with external coaching and other relevant programs and initiatives. Despite the growing popularity and reported benefits, there is a substantial dearth of research on the dynamics of “internal coaching” relationships, making it one of the least explored areas in organizational coaching literature. This paper contributes to addressing the research gap by presenting the outcomes of a study that explores the coach–client relationship and captures perspectives from internal coaches, external coaches, managers, and, notably, coachees, also known as coaching clients. Employing a …

A National Analysis Of P–12 Equity Director Role Establishment, Andrew Matschiner Oct 2024

A National Analysis Of P–12 Equity Director Role Establishment, Andrew Matschiner

Education Faculty Articles and Research

District “equity director” (ED) roles have grown rapidly over the past decade. Drawing on interviews and surveys with over 70 EDs across nearly 30 states, this study documents dramatic ED role growth from 2018 to 2022 specifically and examines why, according to EDs, such roles were established locally. Findings, drawing on scholarship on social activism, demonstrate how insider influence from district educators and leaders; intermediate pressure from community coalitions, parents, and students; and external coercion from state and federal education departments and civil rights agencies spurred ED role establishment. Challenges to ED efficacy are discussed, including ED role establishment as …

An Autonomous Implantable Device For The Prevention Of Death From Opioid Overdose, Joanna L Ciatti, Victoria E Brings, Brian Ruyle, Michael R Talcott, Prashant Gupta, Richard A Slivicki, Nicolas Massaly, Michael C Montana, Mitchell Pet, Jose A Morón, Robert W Gereau, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Opioid overdose accounts for nearly 75,000 deaths per year in the United States, now a leading cause of mortality among young people aged 18 to 45 years. At overdose levels, opioid-induced respiratory depression becomes fatal without the administration of naloxone within minutes. Currently, overdose survival relies on bystander intervention, requiring a nearby person to find the overdosed individual and have immediate access to naloxone to administer. To circumvent the bystander requirement, we developed the Naloximeter: a class of life-saving implantable devices that autonomously detect and treat overdose while simultaneously contacting first responders. We present three Naloximeter platforms, for fundamental research …

A Method For Assessing The Efficiency In Two-Stage Production Systems In The Presence Of Dual-Role Factors, Chongyu Ma, Jianwei Ren, Lijun Tang, Chunhua Chen, Chenxi Feng Oct 2024

A Method For Assessing The Efficiency In Two-Stage Production Systems In The Presence Of Dual-Role Factors, Chongyu Ma, Jianwei Ren, Lijun Tang, Chunhua Chen, Chenxi Feng

Plymouth Business School

Due to the existence of dual-role factors, it is difficult to evaluate the production efficiency of two-stage systems. Unlike single-stage systems, two-stage systems involve intermediate products that serve as both inputs and outputs. Hence, to overcome existing obstacles, we propose a novel approach called the two-stage enhanced Russell model with dual-role factors (T-ERM-D) to assess the overall efficiency of two-stage production systems. Furthermore, divisional models are developed to evaluate the efficiency of each individual stage. The 0-1 programming is applied to deal with dual-role factors. To handle the non-linearity of these models, the Charnes-Cooper transformation is employed to convert them …

Evaluating Video Self-Modeling To Teach Poison Safety Skills To Children With Autism, Samantha Groom-Sheddler Oct 2024

Evaluating Video Self-Modeling To Teach Poison Safety Skills To Children With Autism, Samantha Groom-Sheddler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accidental poisoning of children in the United States is a problem, especially for vulnerable children with developmental disabilities. Research has shown that active learning approaches such as behavioral skills training are more effective for teaching poison safety skills to children with disabilities. Some research also suggests that video modeling and video self-modeling (VSM) may be effective for teaching safety skills to children with disabilities. As only one study has evaluated VSM for teaching gun safety skills, more research is needed to evaluate this intervention. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using VSM to teach …

Bike Buses: An Evaluation Of An Emerging Active Transportation To School Intervention, Evan Howington, John H. Macarthur, Nathan W. Mcneil

PSU Transportation Seminars

Bike Buses are a relatively new form of Active Transportation to School (ATS) that have gained popularity in Europe and the United States in recent years. Generally, a bike bus consists of one or more adult supervisors, often parents, who guide a group of students along a defined ‘route’ to one or more schools. Using literature from the last 15 years published on ATS in North America, we identify four thematic areas of influence on Bike Buses: school policies, parent and student attitudes and behaviors, the urban environment, and the street environment. We conclude that Bike Buses can be situated …

Decentralized Clinical Trials (Dcts): Facilitators & Barriers For A Pediatric Research Site, Abby Kietzman

Presentations

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered the way clinical research is conducted through a widespread adoption of telemedicine practices. Using telehealth/telemedicine services allowed researchers to conduct “decentralized clinical trials”, or DCTs, for all or portions of study protocol procedures while maintaining safety measures implemented for pandemic control. However, current review of available literature details the explosion in use of decentralized clinical trials, resulting in gaps in evidence-based outcomes and lack of standardization across research entities. While sponsors and contract research organizations (CROs) tend to lead the charge around adoption of DCTs, research sites are hesitant to make the transition …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Self-efficacy is an important ingredient in successful disease management, especially in patients with chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the information on self-efficacy and its influencing factors among RA patients is scarce. This study investigated the level of self-efficacy and its pertinent predictors among RA patients in Taiwan. This cross-sectional study recruited patients with RA from a hospital in Taiwan between January and October 2023. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on respondents’ demographic and job characteristics and included a Chinese version of the Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES). Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis was employed to …
