Staff Education Project For Adult Icu Nurses, Hani Ayyad Oct 2024

Staff Education Project For Adult Icu Nurses, Hani Ayyad

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This staff education project is a crucial initiative designed to enhance nursing knowledge and skills in the care of central lines. Its overarching goal is to reduce the incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in a teaching hospital. Given that CLABSIs are a major concern in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), due to higher morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures, this project is very important. My goal was to fill these gaps by providing a comprehensive staff education program addressing this critical issue. The evidence-based practice question (EBP) guiding this Doctor of Nursing Project (DNP) project was: Does the Staff Education …

Effective International Corporate Diversification And Performance Improvement Strategies, Danielle L. Oswald Oct 2024

Effective International Corporate Diversification And Performance Improvement Strategies, Danielle L. Oswald

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ineffective international diversification strategies can potentially cause negative operational performance and return on investment (ROI). Business leaders are concerned with ineffective international diversification strategies, as performance improvement drives business growth, innovation, and profitability in international markets. Grounded in the Baldrige excellence framework (BEF) and stakeholder theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to identify and explore effective international diversification strategies senior leaders can use to create a franchise or growth platform for organizational expansion. Participants were two experts in the business consulting industry in New Zealand who contributed to international diversification strategies. Data were collected using semistructured …

Lived Experiences Of Low-Income African American Burn Survivors In Greater Washington, Dc, Angela White Oct 2024

Lived Experiences Of Low-Income African American Burn Survivors In Greater Washington, Dc, Angela White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Burn injuries are wounds that affect the skin and other organic tissue, categorized according to the mechanism of injury and brought on by heat, electricity, chemicals, fire, or flames. In the United States, researchers have shown that race and other healthcare inequalities lead to increased burn injuries among African Americans but have yet to explore their lived experiences after sustaining these injuries. This phenomenological study explored perceptions and understanding of the manifestation of burn injuries of seven African American burn survivors. Participants were recruited in health services public waiting areas, community storefronts, mailers, and on Facebook. Data were collected via …

(Un)Know Thy “Self”: Interconnected Consciousness And Different Ways Of Knowing, Laurel Waterman, Karyn Cooper Oct 2024

(Un)Know Thy “Self”: Interconnected Consciousness And Different Ways Of Knowing, Laurel Waterman, Karyn Cooper

The Qualitative Report

This paper draws on preliminary data from a qualitative study in curriculum and pedagogy, “Stories of Teaching about Consciousness: An Inquiry into Worldviews and Wellbeing.” An emerging theme is the concept of the self and how it entwines with perspectives on consciousness. Analyzing consciousness and the self through The Five Contexts framework reveals assumptions at the heart of research and education that often go unquestioned. We wonder, what might alternative perspectives on consciousness and the self offer to researchers and educators? The study aims to inform a larger project of “consciousness education,” defined as education about perspectives on the source …

Design Of End Bent Piles For Downdrag, Tanna Frye Oct 2024

Design Of End Bent Piles For Downdrag, Tanna Frye

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Embankments are commonly used for bridge approaches, with mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls being the preferred choice in Florida. However, the construction of embankments leads to the settlement of the underlying soil, regardless of soil type. When piles are driven before embankment construction, the initial settlement of the original soil creates relative movement between the pile and the surrounding soil, introducing frictional forces. When the existing soils move downward relative to the pile, a downward-oriented side shear known as downdrag is introduced. While downdrag is addressed in current codes and textbooks, it is often only briefly mentioned and primarily in …

Assessing The Impact Of Ai Assisted Software Development And User Experience Of A College Football Simulation Game: A Study Of Player And Industry Professional Perspectives, Augustus J. Scarlato Iii

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the design of video games, specifically the development of a college football simulation game. This study documents the creation of an alpha version college simulation game assisted by Open AI’s Chat GPT 4.0 API, to potentially improve game development, gameplay realism, and user interaction. The study then assesses how both student players and industry professionals perceive AI-enhanced gaming, emphasizing the usability, gameplay experience, and overall quality of the game using a Likert scale survey. The analysis also highlights differences in perceptions between students and industry professionals, with the latter group …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

COVID-19 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and is associated with hypercoagulability and increased incidence of thrombotic events. In this study, we investigated the levels of neutrophil extracellular trap biomarkers and von Willebrand factor to assess if these could predict the occurrence of a thrombotic event in COVID-19 patients. We enrolled 202 patients hospitalized with symptomatic COVID-19 infection. Of those, 104 patients did not experience any type of thrombotic events before or during their hospitalization. These patients were compared to the other cohort of 98, who experienced thrombotic events before or during their hospitalization. In total, …

Toward A Theory Of Exposure, Brian Rappert, Gustav Kuhn Oct 2024

Toward A Theory Of Exposure, Brian Rappert, Gustav Kuhn

School of Psychology

Excited attention towards the disclosure of methods – what is termed ‘exposure’– infuses both popular and practitioners’ portrayals of entertainment magic. As an art associated with ‘doing the impossible’, the disclosure of methods is widely held as ruining the prospects for experiencing astonishment. For all its familiarity, however, exposure is rarely subject to extended consideration in the thoughts and theories of professional magicians. In line with a tradition of conceiving of magic as a form of social interaction constituted through the relations between audiences and performers, this article offers a theorization of exposure; one grounded in empirical research with magicians. …

Multiscale & Multiphysics Model Of Damage In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Edris Akbari Oct 2024

Multiscale & Multiphysics Model Of Damage In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Edris Akbari

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The demand for safer and more reliable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in electric vehicles has increased significantly, especially in addressing mechanical failures like internal short circuits (ISCs), which can lead to thermal runaway. This research investigates the mechanical behavior and damage mechanisms in lithium-ion pouch cells through a multiscale and multiphysics approach, focusing on Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries.

The study involved quasi-static and dynamic mechanical tests, including indentation and high-speed penetration, to evaluate stress-strain responses and fracture behaviors. Anisotropic mechanical properties were measured for individual battery components (anode, cathode, separator, and shell) using …

Introduction: We investigated the genetic determinants of variation in the hemoglobin glycation index (HGI), an emerging biomarker for the risk of diabetes complications. Methods: We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for HGI in the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial (N = 7,913) using linear regression and additive genotype encoding on variants with minor allele frequency greater than 3%. We conducted replication analyses of top findings in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study with inverse variance-weighted meta-analysis. We followed up with stratified GWAS analyses by sex and self-reported race. Results: In ACCORD, we identified single …
