Marching Backwards Into Battle: On The Use Of Dignity / "كرامــة" In The Syrian Revolution, Stefan Tarnowski Oct 2024

Marching Backwards Into Battle: On The Use Of Dignity / "كرامــة" In The Syrian Revolution, Stefan Tarnowski

Regards

The concept of dignity takes on a strange complexion when thinking through its double use by both the regime and its opponents in Syria since 2011. Like Bashar al-Assad, dignity seems to have two bodies. One belongs to the period of the Arab revolutions, events that some scholars once hoped would herald the end of postcoloniality (Dabashi Hamid); the other to the anticolonial struggle for dignity enshrined in the postcolonial state (Harkin Juliette). Drawing on Quentin Skinner and Reinhart Koselleck, the essay proposes a method for analysing lexical continuity and semantic shift in the lexicon of the Syrian revolution. Through …

Moments Of Silence In Syria Place And Self In The State Of Exception, Ammar Almamoun Oct 2024

Moments Of Silence In Syria Place And Self In The State Of Exception, Ammar Almamoun

Regards

This research discusses “silence” within the concept of “necropolitics” in the Syrian context, aiming to observe the conceptual “space” that silence refers to and creates, along with its political and performative meanings—especially when violently imposed on individuals. We examine the term “officers of silence” in artistic and literary works, as well as in forms of obedience and protest-oriented public performances, in an attempt to understand their authority and political impact.
Our study adopts an intersectional approach that combines political theory with forms of daily performance, performative theory, and elements of performance art. We also use artistic and literary works from …

Background: The concept of health literacy (HL) is constantly evolving, and social determinants of health (SDoH) have been receiving considerable attention in public health scholarship. Since a 1-size-fits-all approach for HL fails to account for multiple contextual factors and as a result poses challenges in improving literacy levels, there is a need to develop a deeper understanding of the current state of HL and digital health literacy (DHL) research. Objective: This study examined scholars’ conceptualization and scope of work focused on HL and DHL. Methods: Using a search string, investigators (N=2042) focusing on HL, DHL, or both were identified from …

Should Legal Writing Professors Continue To Teach Traditional Legal Citation Rules For Parentheticals Despite The Increased Usage Of (Cleaned Up) Parentheticals?, Donna L. Eng

UF Law Faculty Publications

With the rise of (cleaned up) citations from practitioners and courts, Legal Writing Professors should continue to teach traditional legal citation rules for parentheticals. Teaching traditional legal citations for parentheticals will not only prepare students for the real world of legal writing expected by many courts, but will also help them to avoid ethical pitfalls that may result from the use of (cleaned up) citations. The author also calls for a return to the use of traditional legal citation rules for parentheticals to mitigate any further impacts on the evolution of jurisprudence, and to comply with a lawyer’s ethical duty …

Cascading Hazards In Volcanic Environments: Monitoring, Modelling And Impact Analysis Of Tsunamigenic Flows For Risk Reduction, Irene Manzella, Symeon Makris, Daniele Casalbore, Paul Cole, Karim Kelfoun, Aggeliki Georgiopoulou, Anna Hicks, Cees Van Westen

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Volcanic environments present complex multi-hazard scenarios where primary volcanic activity can trigger cascading hazards or where multiple hazards can occur simultaneously, leading to cascading and compounding impacts on communities and ecosystems. Stromboli, one of the most active volcanoes globally, exemplifies these challenges with its frequent eruptions, pyroclastic density currents, landslides, and tsunamis. In the present study, the mechanisms behind tsunamigenic flows at Stromboli are investigated by using extensive monitoring data from previous studies and numerical modelling. Key findings from simulations and parametric analysis are presented, showing the relationships between mass flow dynamics, morphological factors, and tsunami generation. A more comprehensive …

Towards An Understanding Of Black Girls’ Digital Activism: What The Black Girls’ Literacy Framework Reveals About The Digital Literacy Practices Of Adolescent Black Girls, Lakisha Odlum

Publications and Research

This qualitative study explored the digital literacy practices of adolescent Black girls who actively engaged on social media in the aftermath of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. I employ intersectionality and the Black Girls’ Literacies (BGL) framework (Haddix & Muhammad, 2016) to analyze six qualitative interviews I conducted with adolescent Black girls who avidly used video sharing social media during that time. The data analysis aligned with the following components of the BGL Framework: Black girls’ literacies are intellectual, political, and critical. Moreover, the data analysis also revealed that Black girls espoused two different identities while using …

Significance Of Color Dimorphism In Female Florida Scrub Lizards, Dylan F. Styers, Lance D. Mcbrayer

Honors College Theses

Color dimorphism refers to the variation in color, color frequency, and physical traits between male and female individuals of the same species. It manifests in most dioecious species, presenting as differences in size, color, marking, and behavioral sexual characteristics. Sceloporus woodi, the Florida scrub lizard, is a species endemic to Florida that exhibits color dimorphism, particularity in size, and coloration of secondary sex characteristics. Despite the significance of color dimorphism in the social structure and sexual selection in these lizards, little is known about the factors that are correlated to sexual secondary characteristics present in females. This study explored the …

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This dissertation explores the dynamics between parenting practices, family structure, community violence exposure, and adolescent development through three interrelated studies. Collectively, these papers address how family environments shape adolescent experiences and outcomes, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using data from the Add Health study, this dissertation offers insights for researchers and clinicians supporting youth in vulnerable contexts. Chapter 1 examines the influence of average perceived communication and involvement, as well as differences in these behaviors between parents, on adolescent community violence exposure. This study critiques the conventional focus on averages, emphasizing the impact of discordant parenting. Chapter 2 investigates how …

Well Presence, Well Performance: The Effect Of Online Presence On Indonesian Remote Employees’ Performance Through Workplace Well-Being, Iqbal Maesa Febriawan

Psychological Research on Urban Society

Accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and driven by technological advances as well as changing attitudes toward traditional office environments, the workplace landscape has experienced a rapid shift toward remote work. Regardless of urban employees’ interest in remote work, studies have yet to explore the impact of online presence on employee performance as mediated by workplace well-being. A total of 132 private and government employees completed three questionnaires. The results supported the hypothesis that workplace well-being mediates the effect of online presence on performance. The findings also suggest that employees with stronger online presence tend to have better workplace well-being, which …

Introduction, Abdullah Alkafri Oct 2024

Introduction, Abdullah Alkafri

Regards

Speaking of Pierre Bourdieu, John Lechte says, “Given the complexity that characterizes Bourdieu’s work, there is always a risk of misunderstanding him. It is therefore necessary to read his complete works with care – the same care that he himself took with his writings”. We begin with this quote to emphasize that the foundations of knowledge production, when approached from a sociological perspective, require studying complex conditions and determinants. These are a prerequisite for learning, recognition and research. Without them, learning can be misunderstood or misinterpreted, especially as knowledge production always takes place in a complex and complicated world that …

Sijniyya: New Prison Songs In Sednaya, Eylaf Bader Eddin Oct 2024

Sijniyya: New Prison Songs In Sednaya, Eylaf Bader Eddin

Regards

The research Sijniyya: New Prison Songs in Sednaya seeks to study and analyze musical practices from the perspective of personal expression, rather than through the lens of authority and control, contrasting with studies that primarily focus on Syrian prisons. This approach is based on the belief that focusing on personal practices will indirectly reveal the power dynamics within Syrian prisons, especially in Sednaya. Unexpectedly, and by chance, a conversation with a friend suggested that even Syrian torture facilities may hold traces of musical practices. To explore this, the research examines political prisoners affiliated with the Syrian Communist Party, who were …

Zero Degree Cinema Documenting The Syrian Uprising, And The Utopia Of Cinema, Zaher Omareen

Regards

This research investigates “Zero Degree Cinema” in the 2011 Syrian uprising, focusing on how low-resolution imagery, handheld filming, and ambient sound contribute to the formation of a distinctive audiovisual identity in documentary cinema. By employing theoretical frameworks from Roland Barthes, John Ellis, and Hito Steyerl, the study contextualizes Syrian protest videos within the broader landscape of documentary film movements. It reveals the impact of spontaneous, citizen-led documentation in conflict zones and examines how experiences of fear and mortality inform new artistic characteristics in this genre. The findings highlight the innovative use of technology and aesthetics in capturing the immediacy of …
