No. 30: Pandemic Shocks And The Food Security Of Somali Migrants And Refugees In Nairobi, Kenya, Zack Ahmed, Jonathan Crush, Samuel Owuor
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The COVID-19 pandemic triggered severe shocks to food security for marginalized populations in urban areas. Somali migrants and refugees in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighbourhood faced disproportionate impacts due to strict containment measures, disrupted food supply chains, and the shutdown of informal markets. These disruptions exacerbated existing socio-economic inequities, leading to heightened food insecurity. This paper examines the multi-dimensional effects of the pandemic on the food security of Somali migrants and refugees, focusing on their access to informal food networks and the broader socio-economic factors influencing their livelihoods. Utilizing a household survey and in-depth interviews conducted in August 2022, the study reveals …

The Future Of Human Germline Genome Editing: Analyzing He Jiankui’S Experiment, Amanda Bolton
Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work
When He Jiankui announced the births of twins Lulu and Nana, the first genome-edited babies, the scientific community responded in an uproar, raising questions about the implications of human germline genome editing (GGE). This paper examines the intricate medical, ethical, and social aspects of Jiankui's experiment. Advocates argue that GGE could eradicate genetic disorders and enhance disease resistance, particularly targeting diseases like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) through techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9. However, critics emphasize ethical concerns relating to the potential for eugenics, unintended genetic consequences, and the autonomy of future generations. Off-target mutations could lead to permanent problems, as modifications …

Art And Anatomy: Influence Of Combined Studies During The Italian Renaissance And Today, Sylvie Bechtold
Art And Anatomy: Influence Of Combined Studies During The Italian Renaissance And Today, Sylvie Bechtold
Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work
In the sixteenth century, the disciplines of art and anatomy provided valuable insights to one another. This paper explores the question: in what ways did the intertwined studies of art and anatomy during the Italian Renaissance contribute to advancements in each field, and what influence does this still have on studies today? First, to accurately portray humans in art, artists had to turn to dissection as a way to improve their knowledge of the human body. Some artists who used dissections were Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. One resulting advancement was how da Vinci’s anatomical notes were later published to …

Covid-19 And Access To Healthcare At The Crossing Of Race, Poverty, And Rurality, Shavonnie R. Carthens
Covid-19 And Access To Healthcare At The Crossing Of Race, Poverty, And Rurality, Shavonnie R. Carthens
Journal of Law and Health
Black Americans make up 7.7 percent of the rural population in the United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic many in this population found themselves at a unique intersection of inequity - being Black, poor, and residing in a rural area. Poverty is a known contributor to negative health outcomes and is a risk factor for death from coronavirus infection. The association between race and poverty, when examining infectivity and mortality rates of COVID-19, have disproportionately devastated Black Americans and other minorities. Further, research indicates the presence of a general “rural mortality penalty” wherein rural Black communities have higher death rates …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The reconstruction of craniomaxillofacial bone defects remains clinically challenging. To date, autogenous grafts are considered the gold standard but present critical drawbacks. These shortcomings have driven recent research on craniomaxillofacial bone reconstruction to focus on synthetic grafts with distinct materials and fabrication techniques. Among the various fabrication methods, additive manufacturing (AM) has shown significant clinical potential. AM technologies build three-dimensional (3D) objects with personalized geometry customizable from a computer-aided design. These layer-by-layer 3D biomaterial structures can support bone formation by guiding cell migration/proliferation, osteogenesis, and angiogenesis. Additionally, these structures can be engineered to degrade concomitantly with the new bone tissue …

This paper investigates strategies to enhance operational efficiency in course scheduling at higher education institutions. Efficient course scheduling is crucial for maximizing utilization of facilities, faculty expertise, and student enrollment, ultimately enhancing educational outcomes and institutional effectiveness. The literature is clear in that common challenges such as underutilization of resources, scheduling conflicts, and high rates of course cancellations not only disrupt student academic plans but also strain institutional resources and diminish student confidence. Data driven decision making empowers administrators to identify potential enrollment trends and make timely adjustments to course schedules. In order to continuously improve operational efficiency, administration in …

Operational Risk, Capital Regulation, And Model Risk, Robert T. Stewart
Operational Risk, Capital Regulation, And Model Risk, Robert T. Stewart
Business: Faculty Presentations
Operational risk capital regulation is moving from internal to standardized models - from the advanced measurement approach (AMA) to the standardized measurement approach (SMA). All know the results of these changes: politically connected banks will further decrease their equity financing making bank failures and taxpayer-backed bailouts more likely. Yet the goal of operational risk modeling must be to create useful models that capture relevant aspects of reality and improve decision-making. Therefore, operational risk modeling should assimilate seven fundamental properties into an operational risk managerial framework: well-aligned incentives, inaccuracies in the data, accounting for empirical realities, acknowledging unknown unknowns, communicating uncertainty, …

In today's competitive business landscape, organizations strive to differentiate themselves and gain sustainable advantages. The Strategy Map, derived from the Balanced Scorecard framework, has been instrumental in aligning strategy implementation with design intent. However, many companies struggle to comprehensively analyze customer needs when crafting objectives under the Customer Perspectives section, often resulting in generic and ineffective goals. To address this gap, this paper proposes the Customer Experience Spectrum, an innovative framework designed to enhance the Strategy Map's Customer Perspectives component. By systematically analyzing customer needs and expectations across various touchpoints, the Customer Experience Spectrum enables organizations to construct tailored objectives …

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown
Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown
Animal Sentience
This commentary examines the potential of tests of judgment bias to assess fish welfare in aquariums and zoos. Judgment bias offers a non-invasive approach to interpreting affective states in animals, using cognitive responses to ambiguous stimuli as indicators of mental wellbeing. Despite the constraints of captive environments—such as limited handling and species diversity in exhibits—recent adaptations of judgment-bias protocols make them suitable across taxa, including fishes. Collaborations with progressive zoos and aquariums could facilitate this research, based on the shared goal of enhancing animal welfare and promoting public education.

Theorizing The Effect Of Organizational Identification On Vacation Time Usage Among Remote Workers, Brian O'Neill, Jaclyn Schuman
Business: Faculty Presentations
Remote work, a type of flexible work arrangement, has become increasingly common, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shift in the nature of work (Barrero et al., 2023; Shifrin & Michel, 2022). Approximately 35% of U.S. workers who have jobs that can be done remotely are working remotely all of the time, equivalent to approximately 14% of all employed adults, or 22 million individuals (Parker, 2023). Working remotely provides employees more opportunities to balance work and non-work priorities than working in a corporate office (Bowen, 2023). In the conservation of resources model (Hobfoll, 1989) and the personal resources allocation …

Rollup strategies have been effectively executed across many sectors, including funeral homes, pawn shops, regional casinos, ski resorts, golf clubs, veterinarian offices, institutional laundry, and car wash sectors. Amusement parks may be next, with over 400 prospective acquisition targets in the US alone; smaller parks offer untapped potential—family-owned properties priced between $1.7 million and $5.4 million. Roll-up strategies leverage enhanced purchasing power, shared resources, and best practices exchange. Still, it is unclear if they should maintain local brand identity(covert) even if they are part of a large chain or should be overt and nationally branded. The Federal Trade Commission has …
