Borrowing Within Malayic; The Role Of Exotericity, David Gil Oct 2024

Borrowing Within Malayic; The Role Of Exotericity, David Gil

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper presents a general survey of borrowing within the Malayic language family, in which both the source and the recipient languages are either varieties of Malay/Indonesian, or other closely-related Malayic languages. The survey provides empirical evidence for a generalization governing the directionality of borrowing, specifying that the donor variety tends to be higher than the recipient variety on a scale of exotericity, making reference to a set of features of a broadly sociolinguistic nature. In terms of a sociolinguistically-based typology of Malayic varieties, the most frequent instances of borrowing within Malayic are from Standard Malay and Indonesian into koiné …

Seventeenth-Century Malay Wordlists And Their Potential For Etymological Scholarship, Tom G. Hoogervorst Oct 2024

Seventeenth-Century Malay Wordlists And Their Potential For Etymological Scholarship, Tom G. Hoogervorst

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Early-modern wordlists and dictionaries provide an underexplored area for etymological scholarship. By critically comparing different sources written under the aegis of the Dutch East India Company, often compiled by autodidacts who were unable to gain fluency, this article makes some generalizations about the etymology and contact history of early-seventeenth-century Malay. I demonstrate that the Dutch materials provide concrete instances to study lexical change, both phonologically and semantically. When used advisedly, the material also casts light on the nature of language contact in an era in which the Indo-Malayan Archipelago was at the nexus of trade networks connecting speakers of Arabic, …

Don’T Be Cruel: Cruelty, Complicity, Self-Knowledge, And Growth, Sherman J. Clark Oct 2024

Don’T Be Cruel: Cruelty, Complicity, Self-Knowledge, And Growth, Sherman J. Clark

Articles

The papers in this symposium, and the larger body of scholarship to which this symposium is a contribution, ask us to attend to the often brutal and inhumane conditions in American jails and prisons. But why should we do that? Why should we confront the suffering of the incarcerated? Why should we ask ourselves whether that suffering is unjust, unnecessary, or even unconstitutional? The main reason, of course, is that we want to remedy those injustices. We care about the suffering of our fellow human beings, and people do not cease to be our fellow human beings merely because they …

Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan Oct 2024

Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan

LSU Master's Theses

The present thesis explores the intensification strategies employed by bilingual Spanish-English speakers in Southern Arizona, focusing on six distinct devices: lexical, phrasal, repetition, reformulation, hyperbole, and code-switching. While previous research has largely centered on adverbial and lexical intensifiers in monolingual contexts, this study broadens the scope by examining how bilingual speakers leverage their unique linguistic repertoire to amplify their speech. Using a sociopragmatic framework, the analysis reveals a marked preference for lexical intensification, which accounts for more than half of the recorded instances, with phrasal intensification and repetition following closely. Despite its lower frequency, code-switching stands out as a particularly …

Co nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on ceria have been widely studied as active catalytic materials for many industrially relevant reactions. The detailed nature of such particles and the factors affecting their interaction with ceria remain to be better understood. In this study, a very low coverage (∼0.02 ML) of Co is deposited on a model CeO2(111) thin-film surface and is examined using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The Co NPs that nucleate on terrace sites grow with coverage in this range to a maximum size of ca. 40 Co atoms, with an average diameter and height of …

The Politics Of Legal Theory Revisited, Dan Priel Oct 2024

The Politics Of Legal Theory Revisited, Dan Priel

Articles & Book Chapters

Most legal positivists today hold that legal positivism is a morally neutral and the purely scriptive account of the nature of law. This article signs this claim by Brian Leiter’s claim to the contrary. While I welcome the political presuppositions of jurisprudential theories, I show that the association of legal positivism with radicalism is not true. Examining the works of prominent legal positivists, I show that there is no basis for thinking of any of them as a political radical. I also show that many legal positivists were politically conservative. Beyond the Historical Question, I as that argue is no …

Resource Harvesting For Parallel Functions In Serverless Workflows, Peiman Fotouhi Oct 2024

Resource Harvesting For Parallel Functions In Serverless Workflows, Peiman Fotouhi

LSU Master's Theses

In the rapidly evolving landscape of cloud computing, serverless architectures have gained attention for their scalability and cost-effectiveness. This thesis aims to introduce a novel approach to maximize resource utilization in serverless environments through the concept of harvesting idle resources within Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based workloads. Our proposed solution targets resource harvesting at parallel stages by utilizing Machine Learning models to accurately harvest or accelerate serverless functions. Additionally, we present a scheduling algorithm specifically designed to address the unique requirements of DAG workloads in cloud environments.

The framework leverages dynamic resource allocation techniques to identify and exploit idle resources within …

Cp Decomposition Initialization Schemes For Speeding-Up Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Mollee M. Swift Oct 2024

Cp Decomposition Initialization Schemes For Speeding-Up Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Mollee M. Swift

LSU Master's Theses

While machine learning and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are making strides, a persistent effort remains to optimize classification techniques and target redundancies from a large number of parameters naturally present in CNNs. While CNNs have become more accessible across machine learning, the aim is to make their use optimal for central processing unit (CPU) schemes with varying degrees of computational power. Tensor decomposition methods, specifically canonical polyadic (CP) decomposition, look to reduce parameters by compressing specific layers in a CNN. However, they have certain inconsistencies, and their full potential remains untouched as decomposition research is endless, with many facets one …

Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo Oct 2024

Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo

LSU Master's Theses

Many animals use visual signals to evade predators, forage for food, and communicate with conspecifics. Some animals that shift into and out of breeding stages, such as fish, can modulate their visual sensitivity to better adapt to changing internal and external conditions. Previous work in our lab demonstrated that females of the cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni have improved visual sensitivity when they enter reproductive readiness. However, little is known about how fish and vertebrates more broadly modulate visual sensitivity across their reproductive cycle. We hypothesized that the hormone and neuromodulator gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) could modulate visual sensitivity because GnRH is …

Performance Analysis Of C++ Parallel Algorithms In Hpx, Srinivas Yadav Singanaboina Oct 2024

Performance Analysis Of C++ Parallel Algorithms In Hpx, Srinivas Yadav Singanaboina

LSU Master's Theses

The exponential growth in computational power and the increasing demand for high-performance applications have driven the need for greater parallel efficiency. Over the years, the number of cores in consumer-level CPUs and high-performance computing (HPC) systems has grown significantly. In response, numerous parallel programming li- braries have been developed. Each of these libraries offers unique mechanisms to enhance parallel performance. In this paper, we investigate the performance of five such paral- lel programming backends: C++ std::execution::par, OpenMP, TBB, Taskflow, and HPX. We evaluate these libraries using two sets of benchmarks. The first set focuses on standard C++ STL algorithms, including …

Improving Rice Yield Using Sensor Based Nitrogen Application And Best Management Practices (Bmps) In Rice-Soybean And Rice-Crawfish Rotational Systems, Charles Darnall Oct 2024

Improving Rice Yield Using Sensor Based Nitrogen Application And Best Management Practices (Bmps) In Rice-Soybean And Rice-Crawfish Rotational Systems, Charles Darnall

LSU Master's Theses

Sustainable rice farming requires effective nutrient management and conservation practices to maintain high yields and minimize environmental impact. Implementing best management practices (BMPs) promotes lower fertilizer application rates, increased N use efficiency, improves soil health, and water quality. Demonstration fields established in two different rotational cropping systems (rice-soybean and rice-crawfish) in Kaplan, LA in 2023. In each rotation system, the benefits of BMPs (sensor based mid-season N management and cover cropping) compared to farmer’s practice (FP) were evaluated using yield, yield components, soil and water quality as metrics. The rice-soybean fields in 2023 and 2024 were both planted with PVL03 …

Accumulation Of Road Salt In A Calcareous Fen: Kampoosa Bog, Western Massachusetts, Wayne Ndlovu, Andrew J. Guswa, Amy L. Rhodes

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Road salt poses a threat to the quality of soils and water resources. Wetlands located in salt contaminated areas are at risk of experiencing lower plant and animal species diversity. Therefore, it is critical to understand how modifications to salt application rates and hydrological events impact wetland water quality. Here, we use chloride mass flux, discharge, groundwater chloride concentration, meteorological, and salt application data from 2012– 2020 to estimate chloride accumulation and outflux rates in the Kampoosa Bog subwatersheds, located in Stockbridge and Lee, Massachusetts, and bordered by major highways (Interstate-90 and U.S. Route 7). We also investigate the correlation …

The Impact Of Film Cooling On The Heat Release Within A Rotating Detonation Combustor, Shreyas Ramanagar Sridhara, Antonio Andreini, Marc D. Polanka, Myles D. Bohon Oct 2024

The Impact Of Film Cooling On The Heat Release Within A Rotating Detonation Combustor, Shreyas Ramanagar Sridhara, Antonio Andreini, Marc D. Polanka, Myles D. Bohon

Faculty Publications

Rotating detonation combustors establish a detonation wave that continuously circulates inside a small annulus. The presence of the detonation wave and the downstream oblique shock within the small annulus coupled with high mass flow induces a high heat load to the combustor wall. Preliminary analysis shows that for higher thermal power, internal air cooling alone is not sufficient to remove the heat out of the walls to maintain them below the maximum temperature of the metal. A possible solution is to use film cooling to reduce the heat flux to the combustor walls. One issue, though, is that the introduction …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation On Post-Stroke Aphasia: A Single-Subject Design Study, Aswathy Anakkathil Pradeep Oct 2024

Exploring The Efficacy Of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation On Post-Stroke Aphasia: A Single-Subject Design Study, Aswathy Anakkathil Pradeep

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Anomia or word-retrieval difficulty is a common long-term language impairment for individuals with post-stroke aphasia. Several behavioral interventions like semantic feature analysis (SFA) have shown positive results in naming outcomes, but continue to face difficulty in generalizing the treatment effects to untreated items. With recent advancements in technology, researchers are developing newer neuromodulation devices that aim at promoting neuroplasticity and neural reorganization in post-stroke individuals. Transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a relatively new technology that aims at stimulating the auricular branch of the vagal nerve to promote neuroplasticity. Studies have shown taVNS to potentially facilitate positive improvements …

Evaluating Viability, Developmental Competence, And Chromatin Configurations Of Cryopreserved Equine Oocytes, Tricia Adams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Assisted reproduction technology and the use of specialized laboratories have increased in the horse breeding industry over the last decade. This expansion has highlighted the inability to routinely cryopreserve oocytes and preserve female genetics. Oocyte vitrification, a cryopreservation process, continues to be characterized as an experimental procedure in horses. The goal of this dissertation was to evaluate the viability, developmental competence, and nuclear structures of cryopreserved equine oocytes to illuminate potential areas of improvement in the vitrification process. Oocytes were collected from abattoir derived ovaries and exposed to either varying lengths of in vitro maturation (IVM) or pretreated with a …

Coloring Trivalent Graphs: A Defect Tft Approach, Amit Kumar Oct 2024

Coloring Trivalent Graphs: A Defect Tft Approach, Amit Kumar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We show that the combinatorial matter of graph coloring is, in fact, quantum in the sense of satisfying the sum over all the possible intermediate state properties of a path integral. In our case, the topological field theory (TFT) with defects gives meaning to it. This TFT has the property that when evaluated on a planar trivalent graph, it provides the number of Tait-Coloring of it. Defects can be considered as a generalization of groups. With the Klein-four group as a 1-defect condition, we reinterpret graph coloring as sections of a certain bundle, distinguishing a coloring (global-sections) from a coloring …

Countering Workplace Wellness Bias Through Wellness-Legal Partnerships, Barbara J. Zabawa Jd, Mph Oct 2024

Countering Workplace Wellness Bias Through Wellness-Legal Partnerships, Barbara J. Zabawa Jd, Mph

Journal of Law and Health

In the current United States economy, wellness is predominantly marketed to society’s privileged individuals, catering to a mostly white and high-income clientele. When marginalized communities encounter wellness services, such as in the workplace, they are faced with an implicitly biased industry. These biases include an emphasis on individual behavior change without considering social determinants of health (SDOH), cultural appropriation of wellness activities for capitalistic gain, use of biased health measures like Body-Mass Index (BMI), and constant images of and expectations of achieving a stereotypical healthy body. The legal community must wake up to these biases and advocate for more equitable …
