Over twenty years ago, Congress developed a “mountain of evidence” that state criminal and civil remedies against sexual assault and battering were inadequate. The Supreme Court rejected that evidence in United States v. Morrison, striking down a federal civil rights remedy for sexual assault and battering. Since then, there have been many civil cases of sexual assault and battering against high-profile individuals, including the recent E. Jean Carroll lawsuit against a former President. This five-year study, surveying fifty states’ civil law, asks the question prompted by Morrison: Does the civil law today provide adequate remedies to survivors of sexual assault …

Personhood, Politics, Assisted Reproduction, And The Law Post-Dobbs, Myrisha S. Lewis

With the end of the federal constitutional right to abortion, state legislatures and state courts have become far more important in the sphere of reproductive rights. Before Dobbs, anti-abortion advocates had significant (albeit increasingly porous) ceilings on what they could prohibit in relation to reproductive health care. A significant check on those actions is now gone.
In the wake of Dobbs, societal debates about personhood have increased and expanded in terms of their practical implications. Before Dobbs, anti-abortion advocates admitted that Roe and subsequent cases limited the scope of their arguments, especially in relation to the legality …

Teaching Margaret Cavendish And Early Modern Women Writers: 1982 - 2013, James Fitzmaurice
Quidditas
I first came across Margaret Cavendish during the summer of 1982 in an innocuous trade collection of early modern women writers. Like many teachers of English, I made a habit of dropping into used book stores, and in such a place I found the collection. It contained a very few selections from Sociable Letters, in among the work of other women. Those few letters set me off on a new path of formal classroom teaching in person and online first at Northern Arizona University and later at the University of Sheffield. Those letters and other material from early modern …
Medieval Hypebeast: The Conspicuous Consumption Of Joan I Of Aragon, Jonathan Seyfried
Medieval Hypebeast: The Conspicuous Consumption Of Joan I Of Aragon, Jonathan Seyfried
Quidditas
Limited releases, celebrity culture, and insane profit margins: these features define the hypebeast phenomenon of the early twenty-first century. The rise and fall of this cycle of conspicuous consumption bears remarkable resemblance to the craze for French culture in the Crown of Aragon in the late fourteenth century. King Joan I, starting from the time of his youth as the Duke of Girona, funded several projects to import French culture. In 1380, Joan married Violante de Bar, niece of the French King Charles V and the Duc de Berry. Once Joan and Violante ascended to the throne, they co-created a …

Teaching Boccaccio's Decameron And The Black Death Post Covid-19, Vanessa Dimaggio
Quidditas
Giovanni Boccaccio’s introduction to the Decameron depicts one of the most gruesome and vivid portraits of the effects of the Black Death in Florence to come out of medieval Italy. Until 2020, students’ understanding of the plague in medieval Florence was, at best, one of lurid interest in the gory details of a disease that killed nearly 1/3 of the population of Europe, an interest far removed from their reality. However, with the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, students began to understand the difficulties medieval Florentines faced in a way that was all too familiar. This shift in students’ perspective …

A Novel Statistical Framework For Meta-Analysis Of Total Mediation Effect With High-Dimensional Omics Mediators In Large-Scale Genomic Consortia, Zhichao Xu, Peng Wei
A Novel Statistical Framework For Meta-Analysis Of Total Mediation Effect With High-Dimensional Omics Mediators In Large-Scale Genomic Consortia, Zhichao Xu, Peng Wei
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Meta-analysis is used to aggregate the effects of interest across multiple studies, while its methodology is largely underexplored in mediation analysis, particularly in estimating the total mediation effect of high-dimensional omics mediators. Large-scale genomic consortia, such as the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program, comprise multiple cohorts with diverse technologies to elucidate the genetic architecture and biological mechanisms underlying complex human traits and diseases. Leveraging the recent established asymptotic standard error of the R-squared (R2)-based mediation effect estimation for high-dimensional omics mediators, we have developed a novel meta-analysis framework requiring only summary statistics and allowing inter-study heterogeneity. Whereas the proposed …

What if core concepts in International Relations (IR) yielded multiple interpretations that were connected to various political projects, pursued with differing consequences for global governance? What would be the harm of teaching one interpretation as the only interpretation, connected to the only project, with a singular consequence? How might our analysis of the present and our expectations of the future shift if we pluralized our understandings of the political life of core concepts? Patrick Quinton-Brown's book challenges us to do so with one of the core concepts of IR: intervention.Intervention before interventionism joins recent critiques of the Responsibility to Protect …

Rights And Redress For Transgender Survivors Of Prison Rape: The Failures Of The Prison Rape Elimination Act, Natalie Hatton
Rights And Redress For Transgender Survivors Of Prison Rape: The Failures Of The Prison Rape Elimination Act, Natalie Hatton
William & Mary Law Review
This Note will argue that PREA [Prison Rape Elimination Act] provides meager protection and insufficient relief to transgender individuals who have been victims of sexual violence while incarcerated and that the existing mechanisms for relief are insufficient. Because PREA contains no private cause of action to allow survivors of rape to sue for violations of PREA, transgender rape survivors’ pain remains unredressed. To address this problem, this Note puts forth a combination of solutions to remove barriers to redress for transgender survivors of prison rape, including amending PREA to include a private cause of action and repealing provisions of the …

Persistent Post-Dural Puncture Headaches One Year After Lumbar Puncture: A Case Report, Zamanali Khakhar, Maeheq Mir, Soraiya Manji, Sheila Waa, Sayed Karar
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Post-dural puncture headaches usually occur when the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks due to trauma to the dura mater. This often results in spontaneous intracranial hypotension characterized by orthostatic headaches, neck stiffness, and nausea. In this case report, we discuss a 20-year-old male patient who developed symptoms of intracranial hypotension one year following a lumbar puncture. A spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a CSF collection in the epidural space. This was treated successfully by an epidural blood patch (EBP) which resolved the patient's symptoms. This case highlights the necessity of recognizing delayed lumbar puncture complications and the need for a …

The Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network common experiment addresses the aspirational practice of brush management (BM) to reverse the prevailing condition of woody plant encroachment (WPE) and increase perennial native grass production. Across the western United States, the decision to implement BM includes consideration of management objectives, cost, and the expected impact on a diverse suite of ecosystem services.Maintaining or restoring grass cover will help meet the LTAR sustainable production, economic, and social goals, and averting degradation will meet environmental goals. This common experiment, focused on hydrologic and erosion impacts of BM, aims to inform …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Objective: To examine the relationship between etiologically-based preterm birth sub-groups and early postnatal growth according to gestational age at birth.
Methods: Prospective, multinational, cohort study involving 15 hospitals that monitored preterm newborns to hospital discharge. Measures/exposures: maternal demographics; etiologically-based preterm birth sub-groups; very, moderate and late preterm categories, and feeding. Primary outcomes: serial anthropometric measures expressed as z-scores of the INTERGROWTH-21st preterm postnatal growth standards.
Results: We included 2320 singletons and 1180 twins: very=24.4% (n = 856, including 178 < 28 weeks’ gestation); moderate=16.9% (n = 592) and late preterm=58.6% (n = 2052). The median (interquartile range) postmenstrual age at the last measure was 37 (36–38) weeks. The ‘no main condition’ sub-group percentage increased from early to late preterm; the ‘perinatal sepsis’ sub-group percentage decreased. ‘Perinatal sepsis’, ‘suspected IUGR’ and ‘fetal distress’ very and late preterm infants had lower postnatal growth patterns than the ‘no main condition’ reference sub-group. This pattern persisted in late but not very preterm infants when postnatal growth was corrected for weight z-score at birth.
Conclusion: The proportional contribution of etiologically-based preterm sub-groups and their postnatal growth trajectories vary by preterm category. Postnatal growth is partially …

BACKGROUND: The Wnt pathway is involved in proliferation and tissue homeostasis. Aberrant activation promotes cancer cell proliferation and survival. Inhibition of the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5/6 (LRP5/6) coreceptors that regulate Wnt signaling could prevent cancer cell proliferation. BI 905681 is a novel LRP5 antagonist that has demonstrated potent in vivo antitumor activity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a phase I, dose escalation study (NCT04147247) evaluating BI 905681 in patients with advanced solid tumors over two dosing schedules (schedule A: every 3 weeks, 3-week cycles and schedule B: every 2 weeks, 4-week cycles). The primary endpoint was the maximum tolerated …

The description of new taxa and nomenclature updates to currently known taxa from aquatic animal species continues. After a review of the literature from 2022 and 2023, multiple lists of bacteria, including members of Phylum Planctomycetota, were compiled. As with the previous review, most bacteria are oxidase-positive Gram-negative bacilli with familiar families including new taxa in Aeromonadaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Vibrionaceae. A number of Gram-positive bacilli are described including new taxa in the Nocardioides, Paenibacillus, and Streptomyces genera. Two anaerobic species are listed, and one new member of Family Planctomycetaceae is noted. Revised taxa are …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 32. Wallace On The Tigers Of Singapore, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Historian John van Wyhe has written a good deal on Alfred Russel Wallace’s travels in the Malay Archipelago in the 1850s and 1860s, in so doing coming to a number of generally derogative surmises on Wallace’s thoughts and collecting efforts that disagree with the conclusions made by other scholars. In this work one example of such treatment is given, concerning Wallace’s estimation of the number of persons in Singapore attacked by tigers over the middle years of that century.

Postmortem Privacy, Anita L. Allen, Jennifer E. Rothman
Postmortem Privacy, Anita L. Allen, Jennifer E. Rothman
Michigan Law Review
Since their inception in the late nineteenth century, privacy rights have been widely understood to terminate with a person’s death. The “no-privacy-rights-for- the-dead” doctrine has been repeated for nearly 130 years. As demonstrated in this Article, the reality on the ground deviated from this common pronouncement even early on. The divergence is so great today that sustained consideration of postmortem privacy is essential. Subcortical brain structures are involved in developmental, psychiatric and neurological disorders. Here we performed genome-wide association studies meta-analyses of intracranial and nine subcortical brain volumes (brainstem, caudate nucleus, putamen, hippocampus, globus pallidus, thalamus, nucleus accumbens, amygdala and the ventral diencephalon) in 74,898 participants of European ancestry. We identified 254 independent loci associated with these brain volumes, explaining up to 35% of phenotypic variance. We observed gene expression in specific neural cell types across differentiation time points, including genes involved in intracellular signaling and brain aging-related processes. Polygenic scores for brain volumes showed predictive ability when applied to individuals of diverse …
