Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Dr. Lesh's second presentation, "The Digital Renaissance in Education: Adapting Generative AI in Pre-Service Teacher and Provider Strategies," offered insights into the transformative role of generative AI in teacher education. Collaborating with Dr. JeVaughn Lancaster virtually, Lesh and Lancaster shared data from a recent study examining teachers' perceptions of AI in academic research. Findings underscored the potential for AI to enhance educational efficiency while also identifying ethical considerations that must be addressed. Lesh and Lancaster advocated for responsible AI training, stressing that generative AI should augment, not replace, educators' expertise and critical thinking.

3d Printed Microfluidic Fabrication Methodology, Characterization, Mechanical Design, And Applications In Electrostatic Artificial Muscles And Benthic Microbial Fuel Cells, Terak B. Hornik
Master's Theses
The fabrication of microfluidic devices often requires specialized methods. The development of these methods requires careful characterization and understanding of the processes involved. Using primarily PolyJet 3D printing technology, microfluidics offers a wide scope of applications such as microfluidic benthic microbial fuel cells (MBMFCs) and electrostatic artificial muscles. MBMFCs benefit from the confinement of the microbes resulting in close proximity between the electrode and the organisms. Using a modular design called the Sponge, assembly and upscaling is possible. Electrostatic artificial muscles benefit from a microfluidic approach due to the non-linearity of electrostatic attraction creating disproportionate benefits when miniaturized. When designed …

Exploring Boaters’ Intentions And Awareness To Explain Why Some Anchor On Coral Reefs, Caroline P. Caton, Graham E. Forrester
Exploring Boaters’ Intentions And Awareness To Explain Why Some Anchor On Coral Reefs, Caroline P. Caton, Graham E. Forrester
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Coral reefs provide a variety of ecosystem services to humans, but are also degrading due to human activities such as damage from boat anchoring. Anchoring on reef could occur intentionally, because boaters prioritize other considerations that outweigh any desire to not anchor on reef, or unintentionally, because they lack true awareness of the seabed habitat. We conducted structured interviews, informed by the Theory of Planned Behavior, with 130 boaters in the British Virgin Islands to uncover the motivations and awareness underlying their anchoring behavior. Perceived awareness is rarely ground-truthed, so we checked interview responses of anchored boats by snorkeling to …
Financial Resilience And Innovation Among Generation Z In The Face Of Economic Adversity, David Spohn
Financial Resilience And Innovation Among Generation Z In The Face Of Economic Adversity, David Spohn
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Generation Z (born 1997-2012) faces unprecedented financial challenges due to economic upheavals such as the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation, and stagnant wages. This study investigates how Generation Z demonstrates financial resilience and adapts through innovative strategies, using a mixed-methods approach comprising quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Key findings reveal that digital tools, social media platforms, and financial influencers ('finfluencers') play a pivotal role in shaping Gen Z’s financial behavior, driving a preference for non-traditional investment products like cryptocurrencies and socially responsible investments. Furthermore, the study identifies the rise of 'Loud Budgeting' on TikTok as a significant movement toward financial transparency, …
Fatherhood, Family Law, And The Crisis Of Boys And Men, June Carbone, Clare Huntington
Fatherhood, Family Law, And The Crisis Of Boys And Men, June Carbone, Clare Huntington
Faculty Scholarship
Boys and men in all racial and ethnic groups and across most socioeconomic groups are struggling on many fronts, including education, employment, physical and mental health, and social integration. In these areas and more, boys and men are much worse off than they were only a few decades ago. The crisis — which is concentrated among men without college degrees — is rooted in large-scale structural changes to the economy that have decimated jobs for this group and policy choices that emphasize incarceration while doing little to address economic inequality.
The decline in male well-being is not just a problem …

低收入年長照顧者面對的挑戰研究報告, Chak Kwan, Dickon Chan, Ka Chung, Tom Kwong, Meng Soi, Florence Fong, Sheung Wan, Wanda Wong, Chi Ho Liu, Shuk Yan Yuen, Wai Tung Ng
APIAS Research Report

Assessment Of Hemoglobin Concentration In Sows And Their Offspring Over Consecutive Reproductive Cycles, Katlyn A. Mcclellan, Merlin D. Lindemann, Crystal L. Levesque
Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Objective: Evaluate hemoglobin concentration (HbC) in sows and their offspring over consecutive parities. Materials and methods: Twenty-three females were monitored for HbC during parities 1, 2, and 3 at 7 timepoints (30 [± 2], 60 [± 2], 90 [± 2], and 112 days of gestation, 2 and 16 [± 1] days of lactation, and 5 [± 1] days post weaning). Piglet HbC was measured within 18 hours after birth and at 16 (± 1) days of age. Pigs were classified as anemic (HbC < 10 g/dL) or nonanemic (HbC ≥ 10 g/dL) at each timepoint. Results: On gestation day 90, 71.1% of sows were anemic across parities. In parity 1, HbC was less on lactation day 16 than all gestational timepoints (P < .001). In parity 2, HbC on lactation days 2 and 16 was less than all gestational timepoints (P < .001). In parity 3, HbC on lactation days 2 and 16 was less than gestation days 30 and 60 (P = .015). Piglet anemia prevalence at 1 day of age was 55.8%, 36.3%, and 46.1% for parity 1, 2, and 3, respectively (X2 < .001). Piglet anemia prevalence at 16 days of age was 35.6%, 18.7%, and 15.9% for parity 1, 2, and 3, respectively (X2 < .001). Implications: Decreasing sow HbC over the reproductive cycle and lack of post-weaning recovery in parity 3 indicates iron declines with advancing parity and may impact long-term health. Piglet anemia prevalence declined with advancing parity, suggesting a need to reevaluate piglet iron supplementation in litters from younger females.
