If Lived Experience Could Speak: A Method For Repairing Epistemic Violence In Law And The Legal Academy, Terrell Carter, Rachel Lopez Nov 2024

If Lived Experience Could Speak: A Method For Repairing Epistemic Violence In Law And The Legal Academy, Terrell Carter, Rachel Lopez

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Terrell Carter grew up only a stone’s throw from Drexel University, the institution of higher learning where the other coauthor of this Article, Rachel López, would find her academic home years later. Even as a child, Terrell remembers feeling like other institutions that were miles away, like State Correctional Institution Graterford where he would spend most of his adult life, were much more proximate. Paradoxically, he would later come to learn that behind the walls of institutions like Drexel, academics like Rachel would develop ideas and theory that would shape his fate and define his existence behind other walls. Through …

As Punishment For Arrests: Involuntary Servitude Under The Housekeeping Exception To The Thirteenth Amendment, Elissa Bowling Nov 2024

As Punishment For Arrests: Involuntary Servitude Under The Housekeeping Exception To The Thirteenth Amendment, Elissa Bowling

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

The Thirteenth Amendment reads: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Yet, in contemporary American jails and prisons, pretrial detainees have been forced to perform work for these carceral facilities despite not being convicted of a crime. When tasked with assessing the constitutionality of such pre-conviction labor policies, courts employed a narrow reading of the Thirteenth Amendment and ruled that jails and prisons can compel pretrial detainees to perform maintenance and operational tasks under the …

Navigating Race, Equity, And Whiteness: A Case Study Exploring The Culturally Relevant Practices Of English And Social Studies Teachers In A Long Island School District, Betyne Bordes Farrell

Theses & Dissertations

Today, American K-12 classrooms are becoming increasingly racially and ethnically diverse, creating a vital need for culturally relevant pedagogical (CRP) approaches and teacher training to support the achievement of all students. However, despite an expanding body of literature on creating culturally responsive schools, implementation remains challenging for many educators. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand how, if at all, a group of six English and Social Studies teachers in two demographically different high schools, one a predominantly Black school and the other a predominantly Asian school, within the same district enact CRP and navigate issues of …

Chronologically Inappropriate Morphogenesis (Chinmo) Is Required For Maintenance Of Larval Stages Of Fall Armyworm, Xien Chen, Jinmo Koo, Surjeet Kumar Arya, Subba R. Palli Nov 2024

Chronologically Inappropriate Morphogenesis (Chinmo) Is Required For Maintenance Of Larval Stages Of Fall Armyworm, Xien Chen, Jinmo Koo, Surjeet Kumar Arya, Subba R. Palli

Entomology Faculty Publications

Broad complex (Br-C) and eip93F (E93) transcription factors promote insect metamorphosis from larva to pupa and from pupa to adult, respectively. Recently, chronologically inappropriate morphogenesis (Chinmo) has been proposed as a larval specifier in Drosophila melanogaster. However, whether Chinmo is required for larval maintenance in lepidopteran insects, the underlying mechanisms involved in maintaining the larval stage, and its interactions with the JH signaling pathway are not well understood. Here, we used a binary transgenic CRISPR/Cas9 system to knockout Chinmo and Kr-h1 (primary response gene in the JH signaling pathway) in the fall armyworm (FAW). Kr-h1 knockout induced premature metamorphosis only …

Comparative genomic studies of social insects suggest that changes in gene regulation are associated with evolutionary transitions in social behavior, but the activity of predicted regulatory regions has not been tested empirically. We used self-transcribing active regulatory region sequencing, a high-throughput enhancer discovery tool, to identify and measure the activity of enhancers in the socially variable sweat bee, Lasioglossum albipes. We identified over 36,000 enhancers in the L. albipes genome from 3 social and 3 solitary populations. Many enhancers were identified in only a subset of L. albipes populations, revealing rapid divergence in regulatory regions within this species. Population-specific enhancers …

Addressing health disparities through community engagement and interprofessional partnerships is increasingly critical. However, learner-led approaches that integrate medical students, resident physicians, and social work students are not well-studied. We designed a learner-led, interprofessional, public health campaign for a majority Hispanic community, with the goals of building interprofessional leadership skills, engaging learners to address COVID-19 inequities, and disseminating lessons learned. Faculty and students from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Schools of Medicine and Social Work partnered with community leaders to pilot an interprofessional project supported by the American Association of Medical Colleges’ Nurturing Experiences for Tomorrow’s Community Leaders (AAMC …

Osteosarcopenia Predicts Greater Risk Of Functional Disability Than Sarcopenia: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Fradysmex Cohort Study, Oscar Rosas-Carrasco, Betty Manrique-Espinoza, Juan Lopez-Alvarenga, Beatriz Mena-Montes, Isabel Omaña-Guzmán Nov 2024

Osteosarcopenia Predicts Greater Risk Of Functional Disability Than Sarcopenia: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Fradysmex Cohort Study, Oscar Rosas-Carrasco, Betty Manrique-Espinoza, Juan Lopez-Alvarenga, Beatriz Mena-Montes, Isabel Omaña-Guzmán

School of Medicine Publications

Objectives

Aging involves significant changes in body composition, marked by declines in muscle mass and bone mineral density alongside an increase in fat mass. Sarcopenia is characterized by low strength and muscle mass, and osteosarcopenia is the coexistence of sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis. Physiologically, there is a crosstalk between muscle and bone tissues mediated by several pathways. Both, sarcopenia and osteosarcopenia, have been related with adverse outcomes such as functional disability. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether sarcopenia and osteosarcopenia phenotypes increased the risk of functional disability in a longitudinal cohort of …

Overview Of Threat And Risk Assessment Measurement: A State Of The Science Review, Samuel Hunter, Katherine Parsons, Kelsey Ciagala, Sydney L. Reichin, Matthew T. Allen, Erin M. Kearns, Austin C. Doctor, Joel Elson Nov 2024

Overview Of Threat And Risk Assessment Measurement: A State Of The Science Review, Samuel Hunter, Katherine Parsons, Kelsey Ciagala, Sydney L. Reichin, Matthew T. Allen, Erin M. Kearns, Austin C. Doctor, Joel Elson

Reports, Projects, and Research

Threat and risk assessment are the processes of identifying, assessing, and managing threats of targeted violence prompted by warning behaviors. Threat and risk assessment differs from the traditional operations of law enforcement as it may provide predictive information rather than investigating threats after a violent offense has been committed. Threat and risk assessment examine the escalation of behavior over time and validates information from multiple sources

to reach a level of concern. Initially developed to prevent assassinations, the tools and approaches involved in threat assessment have emerged as a violence prevention measure useful in many different types of settings, including …

Summary Report: Examining Soft Target Vulnerability Assessments, Sydney L. Reichin, Kat Parsons, Kelsey Ciagala, Samuel T. Hunter

Reports, Projects, and Research

The purpose of this effort was to gain a better understanding of the current state of vulnerability assessments used in the evaluation of soft targets and crowded places (ST-CPs). First, we reviewed the existing vulnerability assessments and tools used in the assessment of ST-CPs. The assessments reviewed included broad tools that can be used across contexts, as well as more narrow tools that are used in specific facilities or for certain events. We also explored analogous contexts where standardized tools are used to gain insight into creative ways of adapting a tool for use in multiple contexts. Finally, we conducted …

Causal Neuro-Symbolic Ai For Root Cause Analysis In Smart Manufacturing, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

Root cause analysis is the process of investigating the cause of a failure and providing measures to prevent future failures. It is an active area of research due to the complexities in manufacturing production lines and the vast amount of data that requires manual inspection. We present a combined approach of causal neuro-symbolic AI for root cause analysis to identify failures in smart manufacturing production lines. We have used data from an industry-grade rocket assembly line and a simulation package to demonstrate the effectiveness and relevance of our approach.

Causal Knowledge Graph For Scene Understanding In Autonomous Driving, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth Nov 2024

Causal Knowledge Graph For Scene Understanding In Autonomous Driving, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

The current approaches to autonomous driving focus on learning from observation or simulated data. These approaches are based on correlations rather than causation. For safety-critical applications, like autonomous driving, it’s important to represent causal dependencies among variables in addition to the domain knowledge expressed in a knowledge graph. This will allow for a better understanding of causation during scenarios that have not been observed, such as malfunctions or accidents. The causal knowledge graph, coupled with domain knowledge, demonstrates how autonomous driving scenes can be represented, learned, and explained using counterfactual and intervention reasoning to infer and understand the behavior of …

Ontology Design Metapattern For Relationtype Role Composition, Utkarshani Jaimini, Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth Nov 2024

Ontology Design Metapattern For Relationtype Role Composition, Utkarshani Jaimini, Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

RelationType is a metapattern that specifies a property in a knowledge graph that directly links the head of a triple with the type of the tail. This metapattern is useful for knowledge graph link prediction tasks, specifically when one wants to predict the type of a linked entity rather than the entity instance itself. The RelationType metapattern serves as a template for future extensions of an ontology with more fine-grained domain information.

Effect Of Surgical Fixation Timing On In-Hospital Mortality And Morbidity Of Distal Femur Fractures, Joseph T Gutbrod, Dustin Stwalley, Anna N Miller Nov 2024

Effect Of Surgical Fixation Timing On In-Hospital Mortality And Morbidity Of Distal Femur Fractures, Joseph T Gutbrod, Dustin Stwalley, Anna N Miller

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: The literature lacks a large-scale study investigating the effect of surgical fixation timing on early mortality and morbidity outcomes in distal femur fractures. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of fixation timing on in-hospital mortality and morbidity outcomes for operatively treated distal femur fractures retrospectively using large database data.

METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis using data from the National Trauma Data Bank. Patients were stratified into a fragility cohort (age ≥ 60, ISS < 16) and polytrauma cohort (age < 60, ISS ≥16), with both cohorts analyzed separately. Within each cohort, patients were split into three fixation timing groups: within 24 h, between 24 and 48 h, and greater than 48 h from presentation to the hospital. Fixation-timing groups were compared based on the primary outcome of in-hospital mortality rate. Secondary outcomes included hospital length of stay (LOS), ICU length of stay (ICU LOS), days on a ventilator, and complications.

RESULTS: The fragility and polytrauma cohorts included 22,045 and 5,905 patients, respectively. The in-hospital mortality rate was 1.23 % in …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLDs) remain a feared complication of transplantation, with significant morbidity and mortality. The oncogenic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a key pathogenic driver in 50%-80% of cases. Numerous prognostic indices, comprising multiple clinical, epidemiological and tumor characteristics, including EBV tumor positivity, do not consistently associate with worse patient survival, suggesting a potential role for EBV genome variants in determining outcome. However, the precision medicine tools for determining if a viral genome variant is pathogenic are very limited compared with human genome variants. Further, targeted studies have not implicated a specific viral etiological agent in EBV-negative PTLD. Using novel …

Concurrent Optogenetic Motor Mapping Of Multiple Limbs In Awake Mice Reveals Cortical Organization Of Coordinated Movements, Nischal Khanal, Jonah A Padawer-Curry, Trevor Voss, Kevin A Schulte, Annie R Bice, Adam Q Bauer

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Motor mapping allows for determining the macroscopic organization of motor circuits and corresponding motor movement representations on the cortex. Techniques such as intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) are robust, but can be time consuming and invasive, making them non-ideal for cortex-wide mapping or longitudinal studies. In contrast, optogenetic motor mapping offers a rapid and minimally invasive technique, enabling mapping with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, motor mapping has seen limited use in tracking 3-dimensonal, multi-limb movements in awake animals. This gap has left open questions regarding the underlying organizational principles of motor control of coordinated, ethologically-relevant movements involving multiple limbs.

Structural Behavior Of Corroded Reinforced Concrete Beam Elements Repaired With Fabric-Reinforced Matrix Composites, Youssef Ibrahim Elmezayen

Dissertations

Advanced methods for rehabilitation of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with corroded reinforcement were designed and implemented in this research. The nonlinear flexural and shear behaviors of RC beams with corroded reinforcement repaired with fabric-reinforced matrix (FRM) composites were investigated. Numerical simulation models were developed to predict the flexural response of flexure-deficient continuous RC beams before and after repair with FRM composites. A novel sustainable repair solution that involves the use of cement-free geopolymeric matrix reinforced with nonmetallic fabrics was also introduced for rehabilitation of shear-critical RC beams with corroded stirrups. Simplified and easy-to-use analytical approaches were adopted to estimate the …

A Systematic Review Of Privacy Policy Literature, Yousra Javed, Ayesha Sajid

Faculty Publications - Information Technology

An organization’s privacy policy states how it collects, stores, processes, and shares its users’ personal information. The growing number of data protection laws and regulations, as well as the numerous sectors where the organizations are collecting user information, has led to the investigation of privacy policies with regards to their accessibility, readability, completeness, comparison with organization’s actual data practices, use of machine learning/natural language processing for automated analysis, and comprehension/perception/concerns of end-users via summarization/visualization tools and user studies. However, there is limited work on systematically reviewing the existing research on this topic. We address this gap by conducting a systematic …
