Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra–high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 yr of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above 4 EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in R.A. above 8 EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the 8–16 EeV energy bin is now also above the 5σ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above 8 EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of …

Let G be a simple graph with vertex set V (G) and edge set E(G). Graph labeling is an assignment of integers to the vertices or the edges, or both, subject to certain conditions. For a graph G(V, E), a friendly labeling f : V (G) → {0, 1} is a binary mapping such that |vf(1) − vf(0)| ≤ 1, where vf(1) and vf(0) represents number of vertices labeled by 1 and 0 respectively. A partial edge labeling f∗ of G is a labeling of edges such that, an edge uv ∈ E(G) is, f∗(uv) = 0 …

Background: Paediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major public health challenge in children, requiring accurate and timely diagnosis of causative pathogens for effective antibiotic treatment. We aimed to explore the utility of next-generation sequencing (NGS) in precise diagnosis of pediatric CAP and its effect on treatment outcome of these children. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to compare NGS-guided antibiotic therapy with conventional methods in pediatric CAP. The study followed PRISMA guidelines and searched for electronic databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Sciences from 2012 to 2023. Studies on pediatric CAP (<18 years) using NGS alongside conventional diagnostics, were included. Results: Database search identified 721 studies and 6 were finally included for review, published between 2019 and 2023. Meta-analysis revealed an overall odds ratio of 2.39 (95 % CI 1.22, 3.56) for NGS vs conventional methods. Detection rates using NGS ranged from 86% to 100 %, surpassing conventional methods (26%–78.51 %). Five out of selected 6 studies (83.33 %) have documented that change in treatment based on NGS finding resulted in clinical improvement of patients. There was no significant heterogeneity and potential bias among the studies. Nearly 80 % of the studies were of good quality. Conclusion: The NGS (particularly metagenomic sequencing) is a promising tool for diagnosing paediatric CAP with high accuracy. It can improve antibiotic usage practices and patient outcomes, potentially reducing antibiotic resistance. Based on meta-analysis, training of healthcare professionals in NGS methodologies and result interpretation is highly recommended.

Vascular dementia (VaD) is a complex neurodegenerative condition, with cerebral small vessel dysfunctions as the central role in its pathogenesis. Given the lack of suitable animal models to study the disease pathogenesis, we developed a mouse model to closely emulate the clinical scenarios of recurrent transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) leading to VaD using vasoconstricting peptide Endothelin-1(ET-1). We observed that administration of ET-1 led to blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and detrimental changes in its components, such as endothelial cells and pericytes, along with neuronal loss and synaptic dysfunction, resulting in irreversible memory loss. Further, in our pursuit of understanding potential interventions, …

Open Access archive

Low back pain is a serious health concern prevalent in majority of the people around the world, especially in case of the elderly. The root cause for this is mostly observed to be the development of lesions/ tears complemented by degenerative effects in the intervertebral disc of L4-L5 and L5-S1 segments. This study aims to analyse the effects of disc degeneration and tears on the mechanical responses of the L5-S1 spinal unit, which has not been investigated. The annulus is represented by an anisotropic hyperelastic Gasser-Ogden-Holzapfel (GOH) model wherein the effect of degeneration is defined by varying the constants responsible …

Myofibroblasts Persist Through Immune Privilege Mechanisms To Mediate Oral Submucous Fibrosis: Uncovering The Pathogenesis, Mohit Sharma, Smitha Sammith Shetty, Sonal Soi, Raghu Radhakrishnan

Open Access archive

Immune privilege is the ability to tolerate foreign antigens without eliciting an inflammatory immune response. Several mechanisms explain a structure's immune privilege status, which is regulated by innate and adaptive immune responses. The role of myofibroblasts in perpetuating fibrosis by acquiring an immune privileged phenotype against the backdrop of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is evolving. Myofibroblasts persist through the Fas/FasL autocrine pathway and induce apoptosis in epithelial cells, explaining the juxtaposition of apoptotic cells in areas of fibrosis. However, increased matrix stiffness, in addition to activating TGF-β, reduces Fas surface expression in myofibroblasts, increasing their resistance to apoptosis. The reciprocal …

The Internal Law Of Democracy, Kevin M. Stack Nov 2024

The Internal Law Of Democracy, Kevin M. Stack

Vanderbilt Law Review

The conventional focus of election law is the constitutional, statutory, and judicial constraints on election officials. But the operation of elections also depends on the law that election officials themselves create. This “internal law of democracy”—produced by state and local election officials and addressed to election personnel and workers—provides on-the-ground guidance on registration, voting, and vote counting; specifies internal processes and protocols; and interprets and translates the meaning of constitutional and statutory law for use within the election bureaucracy.

This Article initiates examination of the internal law of democracy. The Article begins by introducing the idea of internal law—developed in …

Genealogy In Constitutional Law, Charles W. Tyler Nov 2024

Genealogy In Constitutional Law, Charles W. Tyler

Vanderbilt Law Review

Genealogy is a form of argument that seeks to discredit social phenomena by exposing their pernicious ancestry. In recent years, the U.S. Supreme Court has used genealogy to undermine key provisions of written law, doctrinal rules, longstanding practices, and private conduct in cases involving a wide range of constitutional issues.

After comprehensively documenting this development, this Article contends that genealogy can advance conclusions within several widely recognized modalities of constitutional interpretation. More specifically, genealogy can be used to undermine assertions of authority implicit in arguments from precedent, tradition, and ethos. And it can be used to reveal its object’s function …
