Eastern Baccharis Control In Newly Planted Wetland Reserve Programs, Lucas Stamper
Eastern Baccharis Control In Newly Planted Wetland Reserve Programs, Lucas Stamper
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley is a high-priority region for restoration of bottomland hardwood forests. Restoration of these forests is facilitated through conservation easement programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), which focus on retiring marginal agriculture land and restoring bottomland hardwoods. A prominent issue that reduces hardwood establishment success is the failure to suppress competing vegetation, like eastern baccharis (Baccharis halimifolia L.), that aggressively colonize a site after seedlings are planted. Eastern baccharis is a frequent woody invader of disturbed bottomland sites throughout northeast Louisiana. There are few chemical options for …
Learning Problems Related To Stochastic Differential Equations, Jinpu Zhou
Learning Problems Related To Stochastic Differential Equations, Jinpu Zhou
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are essential for modeling systems influenced by both deterministic dynamics and random fluctuations, with applications in a wide variety of disciplines. This thesis develops a Bayesian framework for nonparametric learning in SDEs, addressing key challenges in inference, particularly when dealing with complex systems and incomplete data. The thesis begins by establishing a theoretical foundation in optimization over Hilbert spaces, including a generalized representer theorem to address infinite-dimensional optimization problems encountered in nonparametric inference. Building on this, we introduce a Bayesian framework with shrinkage priors to learn drift functions from high-frequency data. Bayesian approach incorporates low-cost sparse …
Precision Bottlebrush Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Structure-Property Relationship, Nduka D. Ogbonna
Precision Bottlebrush Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Structure-Property Relationship, Nduka D. Ogbonna
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Bottlebrush polymers, a type of non-linear polymer characterized by densely grafted side chains on a linear backbone, offer a versatile platform for material design due to their unique thermomechanical and rheological behavior. Addressing the grand challenge of achieving structural precision for bottlebrush polymers remains crucial because traditional disperse mixtures are plagued with batch variability, limiting our ability to control their functions, and correlate theoretical predictions with experiments. To date, narrow-dispersity bottlebrush polymers remain highly heterogeneous, as they are typically synthesized from disperse linear building blocks.
To address this longstanding challenge of structural heterogeneity in brush polymers, the primary objective of …
Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Maude Valérie White (1866-1937) was an English composer during the Victorian Era. Her main output was in the genre of art song, of which she wrote more than two hundred during her life. Her music was very popular at the height of her career around 1880-1890, but fell out of favor with the general public in line with the general reaction against Victorian art and ideals. This written document focuses on the life of Maude Valérie White contextualized within the ideals of Victorian womanhood. It will explore the development of her musical style through eight song analyses: The Devout Lover, …

Peripheral nerve damage can cause debilitating symptoms ranging from numbness and pain to sensory loss and atrophy. To uncover the underlying mechanisms of peripheral nerve injury, our research aims to develop a relationship between biomechanical peripheral nerve damage and function through finite element modeling. A noncontact, ex vivo electrophysiology chamber, capable of axially stretching explanted nerves while recording electrical signals, was used to investigate peripheral nerve injury. Successive stretch trials were run on eight sciatic nerves (four females and four males) excised from Sprague-Dawley rats. Nerves were stretched until 50% compound action potential (CAP) amplitude reduction was obtained. A constitutive …

BACKGROUND: Acetabular dysplasia has been theorized as a risk factor instability amongst common acetabular fractures, such as posterior wall (PW) fractures. However, common radiographic measurements often cannot be acquired in trauma patients. We evaluated axial computed tomography (CT) scans to identify novel, easily-obtained measurements that correlate with acetabular dysplasia for use in surgical indications and planning.
METHODS: Patients with known acetabular dysplasia undergoing elective periacetabular osteotomy were selected. A different group of patients without pelvic ring or acetabular fractures from an institutional trauma registry were selected as a comparison group. Standard indices of dysplasia were collected, such as center-edge angle …

Psychiatric neuroimaging faces challenges to rigour and reproducibility that prompt reconsideration of the relative strengths and limitations of study designs. Owing to high resource demands and varying inferential goals, current designs differentially emphasise sample size, measurement breadth, and longitudinal assessments. In this overview and perspective, we provide a guide to the current landscape of psychiatric neuroimaging study designs with respect to this balance of scientific goals and resource constraints. Through a heuristic data cube contrasting key design features, we discuss a resulting trade-off among small sample, precision longitudinal studies (e.g., individualised studies and cohorts) and large sample, minimally longitudinal, population …

Breast cancer (BC) is defined by distinct molecular subtypes with different cells of origin. The transcriptional networks that characterize the subtype-specific tumor-normal lineages are not established. In this work, we applied bulk, single-cell and single-nucleus multi-omic techniques as well as spatial transcriptomics and multiplex imaging on 61 samples from 37 patients with BC to show characteristic links in gene expression and chromatin accessibility between BC subtypes and their putative cells of origin. Regulatory network analysis of transcription factors underscored the importance of BHLHE40 in luminal BC and luminal mature cells and KLF5 in basal-like tumors and luminal progenitor cells. Furthermore, …

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Activating mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the oncogene epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are responsible for ~10–50% of all LUAD cases. Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been effective in prolonging patient survival and quality of life, acquired resistance and disease progression are inevitable, presenting a clear unmet need for alternative or adjuvant therapeutics. Here we show that an anti-EGFR aptamer (EGFRapt) decreases viability and tumor growth of LUAD cell lines harboring the L858R ± T790M mutation in EGFR. Additionally, we elucidate …

In mice, the fetal brain is dependent upon the placenta for factors that guide its early development. This linkage between the two organs has given rise to the term, the placenta–brain axis. A similar interrelationship between the two organs may exist in humans. We hypothesize that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from placental trophoblast (TB) cells transport small RNA and other informational biomolecules from the placenta to the brain where their contents have pleiotropic effects. Here, EVs were isolated from the medium in which human trophoblasts (TBs) had been differentiated in vitro from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and from cultured …

Craniotubular dysplasia, Ikegawa type (OMIM #619727) denotes the autosomal recessive skeletal disease identified in 2021 featuring blindness acquired in childhood. Five young members of four Indian families harbored a homozygous indel within TMEM53 (OMIM *619722), the gene that encodes transmembrane protein 53 (TMEM53). When intact, TMEM53 spans the nuclear envelope of osteoprogenitor cells, dampens BMP-SMAD signaling, and thereby slows bone formation. Consequently, defective TMEM53 accelerates osteogenesis. Herein, an American boy is compound heterozygous for a novel deletion and a novel missense mutation within TMEM53. His vision and sensorineural hearing became impaired. Radiographic survey revealed diploic thickening of his skull, broad …

BACKGROUND: Substance use stigma poses a barrier to treatment and recovery from substance use disorder. Stigma is amplified when intersecting with other stigmatized identities, particularly Black racial identity. Despite increasing attention to the intersecting roles of racial and substance use stigma, it is unknown how these stigmas interact to impact treatment and health outcomes among Black people who use drugs. This scoping review examines empirical research documenting differential impacts of race and racism on substance use stigma.
METHODS: We systematically searched PsychInfo and PubMed databases. Eligible studies were conducted in the U.S.; examined a Black sample, subsample, or experimental condition/variable …

Millets are recognized as future foods due to their abundant nutrition and resilience, increasing their value on the global stage. Millets possess a broad spectrum of nutrients, antinutrients, and antioxidants, making it imperative to understand the effects of various processing methods on these components. Antinutritional factors interfere with the digestibility of macro-nutrients and the bioavailability and bio accessibility of minerals. This necessitates methods to reduce or eliminate antinutrients while improving nutritive and antioxidant value in food. This review aims to elucidate the rationale behind processing choices by evaluating the scientific literature and examining the mechanisms of processing methods, categorized as …
