Screaming In Silence: Exploring Gender Empowerment & Representation In Contemporary Horror Narratives, Miranda Sanders
Screaming In Silence: Exploring Gender Empowerment & Representation In Contemporary Horror Narratives, Miranda Sanders
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, the horror genre has been associated with the objectification and victimization of women, portraying them as helpless and disposable. However, in recent years, there has been a significant shift in the portrayal of female characters in horror media, leading to the emergence of more overt feminist perspectives within the genre. This thesis investigates the evolution of the horror genre through a feminist lens, examining how contemporary horror narratives challenge and subvert traditional gender roles and power dynamics. The study employs an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing textual analysis and close readings of selected horror films, novels, and critical texts. By analyzing …

The impetus behind this report is to provide state legislators, their staff, other policymakers and community advocates with the necessary information in order to address community needs at the state legislative district level. It nevertheless serves to inform the community at large. The data and analysis contained in the report are descriptive and fairly basic. But they nevertheless provide a stark portrait of the Hispanic population in New York; powerful enough to substantiate the needs of constituents at the district level as well as statewide.

Madagascar is acclaimed for its floral and faunal endemism and biodiversity. Among the island nation's most emblematic fauna are its native mammalian carnivores; they are members of the threatened and endemic Eupleridae family. The Corridor of Marojejy, Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve, Tsaratanana (COMATSA) is a newly protected corridor system that faces deforestation and lacks detailed assessments of its native carnivore community. We deployed 44 motion-activated trail cameras to identify which terrestrial carnivores are found within the rainforest corridor landscape of COMATSA-Sud and Marojejy National Park, and to examine carnivore occupancy, relative activity and the impacts of habitat edge. Our sampling array …

Supporting Student-To-Student Mathematical Discourse With Conversation Mats, Stefanie Baker
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This study examined the impact of conversation mats (Appendix A) on student-to-student mathematical discourse, specifically focusing on challenging interactions, among elementary students in Grades 3, 4, and 5. Despite research highlighting the importance of mathematical discourse, many classrooms struggle to foster meaningful student-to-student mathematical discussions. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study compared discourse patterns between students using conversation mats (experimental group) and those who did not (control group) across six elementary classrooms. The research drew upon social constructivist theory and the Nine Levels of Mathematical Discourse framework, particularly Level 5: Challenging (Weaver et al., 2005).
Data collection occurred over six …

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the use of commercial semi-autonomous vehicles by consumers. This has led to a surge in concerns among users about the limitations of these systems, especially when it comes to safety. In order to address these concerns, users often seek out diverse educational resources to comprehend these constraints, explore alternatives, and determine whether their experiences are representative. This paper examines the viewpoints of users who are using a new AI system that has received minimal training from the vendor. We conducted interviews of the users of the AI to examine …

Magnesium (Mg) – based alloys are becoming attractive materials for medical applications as temporary bone implants for support of fracture healing, e.g. as a suture anchor. Due to their mechanical properties and biocompatibility, they may replace titanium or stainless-steel implants, commonly used in orthopedic field. Nevertheless, patient safety has to be assured by finding a long-term balance between metal degradation, osseointegration, bone ultrastructure adaptation and element distribution in organs. In order to determine the implant behavior and its influence on bone and tissues, we investigated two Mg alloys with gadolinium contents of 5 and 10 wt percent in comparison to …

Book V Of The Mathematical Collection Of Pappus Of Alexandria, Translated By John B. Little, Pappus Of Alexandria, John B. Little
Holy Cross Bookshelf
John B. Little is the translator.
Book V of the Mathematical Collection is addressed to a certain Megethion, about whom we know nothing else. From the context he may have been a student or patron of Pappus in Alexandria. In a heading at the start, Pappus says that the general theme will be comparisons between different geometric figures. The overall structure brings interesting relations and connections to the fore. The book opens with a very well-known and charming discussion of how the importance of such comparisons can be seen by considering the structures built by non-human creatures such as bees. …

Sometimes the role of a library can be misunderstood or underestimated. The common misconception is that a library is just a place for books, magazines, and videos. This concept is very last century, or indeed, last millennium. There are different types of libraries, librarians, and what is offered. When some people think of academic libraries, they think of the stereotype. A quiet place to read a book or journal and type a paper. An academic library is more than that. Part of an academic librarian’s role, as faculty themselves, is to assist other faculty (those who teach courses and are …

A Neutrosophic Model For Measuring Evolution, Involution, And Indeterminacy In Species: Integrating Common And Uncommon Traits In Environmental Adaptation, Antonios Paraskevas, Michael Madas
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In 2017, Professor F. Smarandache introduced the Neutrosophic Theory of Evolution, Involution, and Indeterminacy (or Neutrality) (NToEIaI). He concluded that every theory of evolution is characterized by a certain degree of truth, indeterminacy, and untruth, as in neutrosophic logic. In this perspective, he raised several open questions on evolution, neutrality, and involution that required further research effort. Very recently, in 2024, Smarandache conducted research, from a soft sciences/philosophical viewpoint, on identifying and studying common parts in uncommon things and uncommon parts in common things emphasizing the complexity and interconnectedness of concepts within the context of neutrosophy. In this article, we …

Neutrosophic Logic-Based Crop Yield Prediction And Risk Assessment Using Least Squares Regression, M. Srikanth, R.N.V. Jagan Mohan, M. Chandra Naik
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Agriculture faces significant challenges due to climate change and unpredictable environmental factors, which impact crop yields and threaten food security. This study proposes a novel approach to crop yield prediction and risk assessment using neutrosophic logic and least squares regression. By integrating these methods, we aim to improve accuracy in predicting crop losses under uncertain conditions. The model classifies crops based on profitability and environmental risks, utilizing the independence test to evaluate the relationships between crop attributes. Our approach leverages deep learning techniques, such as restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM), to enhance the analysis of crop data and provide farmers with …

Some Similarity Measures On Generalized Interval-Valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Soft Expert Sets And Their Applications In Medical Diagnosis, Afshan Qayyum, Noreen Mushtaq, Tanzeela Shaheen, Wajid Ali, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In recent years, the application of fuzzy sets has gained significant attraction in various fields, including medical diagnosis, due to their ability to manage uncertainties and imprecise information. This paper focuses on the comparative analysis of similarity measures within the realm of Generalized Interval-Valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Soft Expert Sets (GIVIFSESs) and explores their application in the domain of medical diagnosis. Most of the important topics in fuzzy set theory are the similarity measures between the generalizations of fuzzy set theory. Similarity measures are a crucial tool which was used in data science. In this process, we measure how much the …

Application Of The Neutrosophic Poisson Distribution Series On The Harmonic Subclass Of Analytic Functions Using The Salagean Derivative Operator, Adeniyi M. Gbolagade, Ibrahim T. Awolere, Olusola Adeyemo, Abiodun T. Oladipo
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The authors explore the innovative application of the Neutrosophic series, particularly the Neutrosophic Poisson Distribution Series (NPDS), to investigate various indeterminacy or uncertainties inherent in the classical univalent harmonic function class. The Neutrosophic Poisson Distribution Series is equipped with a Salangean derivative operator and convoluted with analytic univalent harmonic function class to derive new properties, such as inclusion relation, and coefficient inequalities for star-likeness. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in capturing the inherent uncertainties and complexities associated with harmonic functions. There are several other areas of importance of our results that can be unlocked by computer …

Where Did The Time Go?: Against Aktionsart In The Exegesis Of The Greek Verb, Caleb Scott Alons
Theology Undergraduate Work
This paper seeks to argue against the use of Aktionsart in the exegesis of the Greek verb. The four hotly debated components of the Greek verb in exegesis today are time, tense, aspect, and Aktionsart. The first section addresses necessary linguistic preliminaries concerning the literature on time, tense, and aspect from the perspective of biblical scholarship and from the camp of general linguistics. This discussion leads into the second section, which constructs a fourfold exegetical system (FES) consisting of four postulates that (a) explicitly define how significant linguistic terminology is used in the paper and (b) provide a testable method …
A Case Study Of Instructional Design Practices To Promote The Christian Faith And Worldview Within A Homeschool Education Program, Alexandria Mills
A Case Study Of Instructional Design Practices To Promote The Christian Faith And Worldview Within A Homeschool Education Program, Alexandria Mills
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This single case study explored instructional design (ID) practices to promote the integration of Christian faith and worldview within a homeschool education program, aiming to identify gaps in instructors' knowledge and skills and assess the applicability of the Four-Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model. The study sought to determine where instructors may need additional support to integrate a Christian worldview into their teaching effectively and whether the 4C/ID model could help address these gaps. Although the 4C/ID model was not directly implemented in the observed setting, its potential as a structured framework for enhancing instructors' abilities was evaluated.
Data was collected …

Personalized Learning Paths (PLP)s are a popular area of research in E-Learning where sequences of Learning Materials (LM)s and activities are returned based on a learner profile, the LM metadata, and a knowledge structure that describes the relationship between the underlying topics. Unfortunately, PLP researchers tend to not use an empirically supported cognitive science framework for their research, instead relying on such unsupported theories as learning styles or developing their own ad hoc approaches. While many of these researchers present and solve challenging PLP problems using a variety of algorithmic approaches, the PLP community in general would benefit from a …

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
Objective: This paper seeks to understand the meaning of the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) apart from its symbolism of political change, the democratization process and citizenship beyond the prism of occupation. Emphasizing the post-2007 eras of split political and geographical topographies in the Palestinian territories, this study may be expected to analyze, among others, the following research questions: To what extent did and/or does the student youth movement develop democratic agendas or/and reconciliation within and among Palestine's factions? Methodology: The research design used was largely exploratory, in which two major techniques of data collection were utilized: semi-structured interviews and post-analysis …
King Lear'S "Poor, Bare, Forked Animal" And The Cross, Paul J. Stapleton
King Lear'S "Poor, Bare, Forked Animal" And The Cross, Paul J. Stapleton
Quidditas
In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, King Lear describes the “unaccommodated man” as a “poor, bare, forked animal.” Lear’s comments are ostensibly about Edgar disguised as Poor Tom, but critics have detected in the passage a more general expression about human nature. The term “forked” is regularly glossed as “two-legged,” but there are philological problems with this reading. This paper, therefore, takes into consideration an alternate meaning for “forked” based on sixteenth-century usages that relate the noun “fork” to instruments of torture. The paper discusses the depiction of the cross as a “fork” (Latin – furca) in the antiquarian Justus Lipsius’s …
