Telu Activation Function For Fast And Stable Deep Learning, Alfredo Fernandez Nov 2024

Telu Activation Function For Fast And Stable Deep Learning, Alfredo Fernandez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We propose the Hyperbolic Tangent Exponential Linear Unit (TeLU), a neural network hidden activation function defined as $TeLU(x)=x \cdot tanh(e^x)$. TeLU’s design is grounded in the core principles of key activation functions, achieving strong convergence by closely approximating the identity function in its active region while effectively mitigating the vanishing gradient problem in its saturating region. Its simple formulation enhances computational efficiency, leading to improvements in scalability and convergence speed. Unlike many modern activation functions, TeLU seamlessly combines the simplicity and effectiveness of ReLU with the smoothness and analytic properties essential for learning stability in deep neural networks. TeLU’s ability …

Links, Fit, And Sacrifice: How Job Embeddedness Impacts Work Modality And Intention To Stay In Public Accounting, Maryalice C. Trussell Nov 2024

Links, Fit, And Sacrifice: How Job Embeddedness Impacts Work Modality And Intention To Stay In Public Accounting, Maryalice C. Trussell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the public accounting profession has applied an in-person apprenticeship model to assimilate new professionals into the culture of the firm and client service profession. The COVID-19 pandemic quickly challenged this in-person apprenticeship model in early 2020 by forcing most professionals to work remotely. Initial post-pandemic research with public accountants highlighted issues related to remote work, including a lack of social bonds with coworkers, reduced organizational socialization as well as less commitment to the firm and profession. Notwithstanding the new obstacles with COVID-induced remote work, turnover and talent shortages have been persistent challenges in public accounting.

This study is the …

Leveraging The Power Of Storytelling To Encourage And Empower Children Towards Strong Passwords, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen Nov 2024

Leveraging The Power Of Storytelling To Encourage And Empower Children Towards Strong Passwords, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

With the increasing use of computer and smartphones by children, their online safety has been of major concern due to their limited security knowledge and skills. User authentication is pivotal for their security protection, where a body of work focused on children’s password practices. The insights from these studies highlight children’s lack of awareness and skills in creating a strong password. However, there is a dearth in existing literature to understand the scopes of designs for encouraging and empowering children towards strong passwords. As we begin to address this gap, we leveraged the power of storytelling to foster user attachment, …

Exploring Llm Integration And Its Influence On Agent Behavior And Productivity In Insurance Call Centers, Gerardo L. Wibmer Gonzalez Nov 2024

Exploring Llm Integration And Its Influence On Agent Behavior And Productivity In Insurance Call Centers, Gerardo L. Wibmer Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the theoretical impacts of supportive AI tools, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), on agent behavior and communication dynamics in call centers. While technological advancements have streamlined operations, limited research addresses the indirect ways these tools influence agent behavior. Using frameworks like context switching—the cognitive shift required when external stimuli prompt attention shifts—and the Hawthorne effect, where perceived observation modifies behavior, we examine how LLMs shape communication patterns. In call centers, this context switching occurs indirectly as agents adapt to AI note-taking features, whereas in industries like Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC), automation tools prompt more immediate changes …

The Importance Of Including Maternal Immune Activation In Animal Models Of Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy, Bailey Collins, Elise A. Lemanski, Elizabeth Wright-Jin Nov 2024

The Importance Of Including Maternal Immune Activation In Animal Models Of Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy, Bailey Collins, Elise A. Lemanski, Elizabeth Wright-Jin

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a perinatal brain injury that is the leading cause of cerebral palsy, developmental delay, and poor cognitive outcomes in children born at term, occurring in about 1.5 out of 1000 births. The only proven therapy for HIE is therapeutic hypothermia. However, despite this treatment, many children ultimately suffer disability, brain injury, and even death. Barriers to implementation including late diagnosis and lack of resources also lead to poorer outcomes. This demonstrates a critical need for additional treatments for HIE, and to facilitate this, we need translational models that accurately reflect risk factors and interactions present in …

The Impact Of Library Visits On Undergraduate Student Gpa: The Vital Role Of The Library As A Contributor To Student Success, Myra Bloom, Mark Hall, Angela Sample

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This study investigates the relationship between the frequency of student library visits and their academic performance. Library card swipe entry data during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters were anonymized and filtered to include only undergraduate residential students aged 17 and older. Semester GPA scores were correlated with the data resulting in a dataset of 3,340 student records. Comprehensive quantitative analysis reveals a significant correlation between library visits and GPAs. The findings demonstrate that increased visits to the library contribute to higher academic achievement, highlighting the library's essential role as a crucial space for student success.

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

"In pursuit of delivering 'the right care to the right patient at the right time,' the Military Health System (MHS) advocates for collecting and using patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to help demonstrate value-based care.1 PROs identify patients’ perceptions of their health, function, and well-being, which can enhance patient-centered communication and guide data-driven healthcare. 2 The MHS recognizes the value of incorporating PRO data into clinical decision-making and has established a number of platforms for PRO collection across health conditions (eg, behavioral health, traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal injuries). The Military Orthopedics Tracking Injuries and Outcomes Network (MOTION)3 was started as a research …

Data standards are available for spinal cord injury (SCI). The International SCI Data Sets were created in 2002 and there are currently 27 freely available. In 2014 the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke developed clinical common data elements to promote clinical data sharing in SCI. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of SCI data standards, describe learnings from the traumatic brain injury (TBI) field using data to enhance research and care, and discuss future opportunities in SCI. Given the complexity of SCI, frameworks such as a systems medicine approach and Big Data perspective have …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a lethal disease soon to become the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Beside surgery, current therapies have narrow clinical benefits with systemic toxicities. FOLFIRINOX is the current standard of care, one component of which is 5- Fluorouracil (5-FU), which causes serious gastrointestinal and hematopoietic toxicities and is vulnerable to resistance mechanisms. Recently, we have developed polymeric fluoropyrimidines (F10, CF10) which unlike 5-FU, are, in principle, completely converted to the thymidylate synthase inhibitory metabolite FdUMP, without generating appreciable levels of ribonucleotides that cause systemic toxicities while displaying much stronger anti-cancer activity. Here, …

Statutory Religious Accommodation In Employment And The Problems Of Judicial Intent And Outcome, George Wright Nov 2024

Statutory Religious Accommodation In Employment And The Problems Of Judicial Intent And Outcome, George Wright

Texas A&M Law Review

The Groff v. DeJoy case unhappily, but inevitably, generates a variety of realistically unresolvable fundamental problems in typical statutory religious accommodation cases. Perhaps even more important, though, are the unintended and perverse results of Groff’s placing a generally heavier burden of religious accommodation on employers. The Groff standard indeed incentivizes the bringing of more religious discrimination cases, and both the winning and losing of such cases by religious claimants. But our adversarial cultural circumstances, including the typical inseparability of religion, politics, and culture, crucially affect the actual, but unintended, results of judicial reforms. The Groff rule is likely to …

Exploring How Funds Of Knowledge Is Utilized Among Teacher Educators In A Teacher Preparation Program Focusing On Arts Integration And Language Diversity, Gabrielle H. Pretto Ph.D

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

In our current educational climate, teaching for social justice has become increasingly difficult. Teacher educators are faced with certification rules that prioritize test scores over teaching ability, scripted curriculums, and the limited understandings about differences related to culture, class, and race. This study examined how social justice teachings were sustained and enhanced through a Funds of Knowledge (FOK) learning approach. Case study was utilized and guided by the following research questions: (1) What are the FOK of teacher educators participating in the TEALi program? (2) In what ways are the FOK of teacher educators integrated or utilized in their university …

Exploring The Confines Of The Closet, Maddi Stillabower '28 Nov 2024

Exploring The Confines Of The Closet, Maddi Stillabower '28

Best First-Year Seminar Writing

Sedgwick’s “Epistemology of the Closet” and Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room both illustrate how the “closet” works within and between individuals. Unlike religious identity which can be easily explained through familial heritage, David is unable to trace his sexual orientation to any concrete reason. His inability to reconcile his identity with the beliefs of his culture highlights the conflicting experience of many in the queer community. His relationship with Giovanni reveals how internalized homophobia and the absence of queer role models play into feelings toward himself and all queer relationships. The constant dissonance between Giovanni’s genuine feelings and David’s fear of their …
