A Framework To Conceptualize Social Prescribing Services From A Prevention Perspective, Adrienne Alayli, Kerryn Husk, Vashti Berry, Freia De Bock
Peninsula Medical School
Objective: Social prescribing models are expanding worldwide to serve multiple goals, such as attending to social conditions that affect people's health, supporting patients with mental health issues or other long-term conditions, facilitating community building and reducing demands on the health care system. Implicitly, many social prescribing services seek to promote health, prevent morbidity or deterioration of disease. Given that the scientific literature currently does not systematically describe these services as preventive service models, we propose a framework to explicitly conceptualize social prescribing from a prevention perspective. Methods: Based on concepts from prevention science (e.g., classifications of prevention approaches), and a …

Climate change is impacting our patients’ health through increased heatwaves, wildfires, vector-borne illnesses and worsening air quality. Known as a threat multiplier, climate change’s impacts amplify existing health disparities in vulnerable communities. [1] While most clinicians are “concerned” about climate change, only a few have knowledge and skills about climate changes specific impacts on health and how to discuss the implications with their patients. [2,3] While a literature and google search revealed numerous curricula and resources on climate advocacy particularly in medical student education there was limited work in graduate …

Metaproteomics is an increasingly popular methodology that provides information regarding the metabolic functions of specific microbial taxa and has potential for contributing to ocean ecology and biogeochemical studies. A blinded multi-laboratory intercomparison was conducted to assess comparability and reproducibility of taxonomic and functional results and their sensitivity to methodological variables. Euphotic zone samples from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) in the North Atlantic Ocean collected by in situ pumps and the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Clio were distributed with a paired metagenome, and one-dimensional (1D) liquid chromatographic data-dependent acquisition mass spectrometry analysis was stipulated. Analysis of mass spectra from …

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is critical for maintaining brain homeostasis but is susceptible to inflammatory dysfunction. While transporter-dependent efflux of some lipophilic substrates across the BBB shows circadian variation due to rhythmic transporter expression, basal transporter-independent permeability and leakage is nonrhythmic. Whether daily timing influences BBB permeability in response to inflammation is unknown. Here, we induced systemic inflammation through repeated LPS injections either in the morning (ZT1) or evening (ZT13) under standard lighting conditions; we then examined BBB permeability to a polar molecule that is not a transporter substrate, sodium fluorescein. We observed clear diurnal variation in inflammatory BBB permeability, …

All Decisions
Plaintiff, the tenant, sought relief from a fire-related dispute involving a breach of contract, negligence, and other claims against both the cooperative and the lender. The court dismissed the case, ruling that the claims were time-barred and failing to establish a cause of action for breach of contract, negligence, or fiduciary duty. The landlord and lender were acting within their contractual rights, and the tenant's failure to maintain insurance and comply with lease obligations led to the dismissal of the claims.

In vertebrate spindles, most microtubules are formed via branching microtubule nucleation, whereby microtubules nucleate along the side of pre-existing microtubules. Hepatoma up-regulated protein (HURP) is a microtubule-associated protein that has been implicated in spindle assembly, but its mode of action is yet to be defined. In this study, we show that HURP is necessary for RanGTP-induced branching microtubule nucleation in Xenopus egg extract. Specifically, HURP stabilizes the microtubule lattice to promote microtubule formation from γ-TuRC. This function is shifted to promote branching microtubule nucleation through enhanced localization to TPX2 condensates, which form the core of the branch site on microtubules. …

Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) assess genetic susceptibility to alcohol use disorder (AUD), yet their molecular implications remain underexplored. Neuroimmune interactions, particularly in microglia, are recognized as notable contributors to AUD pathophysiology. We investigated the interplay between AUD PRS and ethanol in human microglia derived from iPSCs from individuals with AUD high-PRS (diagnosed with AUD) or low-PRS (unaffected). Ethanol exposure induced elevated CD68 expression and morphological changes in microglia, with differential responses between high-PRS and low-PRS microglial cells. Transcriptomic analysis revealed expression differences in MHCII complex and phagocytosis-related genes following ethanol exposure; high-PRS microglial cells displayed enhanced phagocytosis and increased

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer and tobacco use pose significant global health challenges, necessitating a comprehensive translational roadmap for improved prevention strategies such as cancer screening and tobacco treatment, which are currently under-utilised. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) may further motivate health behaviour change in primary care for lung cancer in diverse populations. In this work, we introduce the GREAT care paradigm, which integrates PRSs within comprehensive patient risk profiles to motivate positive health behaviour changes.
METHODS: We developed PRSs using large-scale multi-ancestry genome-wide association studies and standardised PRS distributions across all ancestries. We validated our PRSs in 561,776 individuals of diverse ancestry …

Communication Resilience In Suicide Prevention (Crisp): An Institutional Ethnography Of Community-Based Suicide Prevention In Florida, Kelli R. Agrawal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The concept of Communication Resilience in Suicide Prevention (CRISP) offers a conceptual framework for exploring communication strategies in community-based suicide prevention. A constructivist paradigm informs this study and utilizes an approach heavily influenced by Dorothy Smith’s critical feminist sociological work of institutional ethnography (IE). The study intentionally interweaves critical research praxis with a dual etic/emic positionality through constructivist understandings of dialectical sensemaking. It uses the Communication Theory of Resilience (CTR) and Institutional Logics Theory (ILT) as analytic tools of inquiry. The study includes purposive sampling and multiple qualitative methods, including unstructured interviews, text analyses, and observational data. Fifteen unstructured interviews …

Emergent Magnetism And Magneto-Transport Phenomena In Helimagnet-Based Heterostructures For Spin-Based Device Applications, Nivarthana Waruni Yapa Abeyrathna Yapa Mudiyanselage
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The study of magnetoresistance (MR) phenomena in magnetic materials has been pivotal for advancing magnetic sensors and spintronic devices. Helimagnets, characterized by a non-collinear arrangement of magnetic moments that form a helical or spiral configuration, present an intriguing avenue for MR-based device applications. Theoretical predictions suggest that the MR magnitude in the helimagnetic (HM) regime can exceed that in the ferromagnetic (FM) regime by over an order of magnitude. However, in metallic helimagnets like manganese phosphide (MnP), the MR in the HM phase remains modest (< 10%), limiting its applicability in MR devices. This dissertation investigates the emergent magnetism and magneto-transport phenomena in nanostructured MnP helimagnets and their interfaces with ferromagnets (Fe) and ferrimagnets (Fe3O4), aiming to enhance device performance.
In the first part of the dissertation, we present a novel approach to achieve …
The Monsters In Twentieth And Twenty-First Century Illustrated Adaptation Of Beowulf For Children And Young Adults, Johanna Katharine Burton
The Monsters In Twentieth And Twenty-First Century Illustrated Adaptation Of Beowulf For Children And Young Adults, Johanna Katharine Burton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I examine how some authors and illustrators of children’s and young adult literature adapt the old English Beowulf, how critics receive their works, and the functions these adaptations serve. My focus is on how the interplay between the visual and verbal text modifies or amplifies the overall story as well as how theories of translation/adaptation, monster, gender, and post-colonialism provide insight and aid in analysis. My ultimate objective is to demonstrate the significance of children’s and young adult adaptations of Beowulf and how these texts contribute to a rich and varied corpus. I argue that the adapter’s social/cultural context affected …
The Impact Of Hearing Aid User Speech On Environment Classification And Own Voice Listener Preferences, Robert Andrew Budinsky Iii
The Impact Of Hearing Aid User Speech On Environment Classification And Own Voice Listener Preferences, Robert Andrew Budinsky Iii
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hearing aids (HA) have improved over the past few decades with advanced signal processing, such as environment classification and background noise reduction, but are still limited by challenges related to when the user is speaking. These challenges include the potential interference a HA user’s voice has on device environment classification and the potential influence a HA has on own voice (OV) sound quality. However, the effects of OV on HA environment classification and signal processing are not well established, nor are the desired HA program settings regarding OV listening preferences. In this study, a combination of electroacoustic and behavioral methods …
