What Do Echolocating Bats Perceive?, James A. Simmons Nov 2024

What Do Echolocating Bats Perceive?, James A. Simmons

Animal Sentience

Donald Griffin, who discovered that bats use echolocation to orient in the dark, also reintroduced to scientific consideration the question of whether animals are consciously aware of their worlds. What bats perceive by echolocation has become an important variant of the question. Bats sense the surrounding scene but use intrinsically auditory representations in which the timing of neural responses to their broadcasts and echoes directly affects what they perceive. They do not seem to transpose pulses and echoes entirely into vision-like spatial neural displays, but instead retain the timing of responses as a cause of perception.

A Reward Self-Bias Leads To More Optimal Foraging For Ourselves Than Others, Luis Sebastian Contreras-Huerta, M. Andrea Pisauro, Svenja Küchenhoff, Arno Gekiere, Campbell Le Heron, Patricia L. Lockwood, Matthew A.J. Apps Nov 2024

A Reward Self-Bias Leads To More Optimal Foraging For Ourselves Than Others, Luis Sebastian Contreras-Huerta, M. Andrea Pisauro, Svenja Küchenhoff, Arno Gekiere, Campbell Le Heron, Patricia L. Lockwood, Matthew A.J. Apps

School of Psychology

People are self-biased for rewards. We place a higher value on rewards if we receive them than if other people do. However, existing work has ignored one of the most powerful theorems from behavioural ecology of how animals seek resources in everyday life, the Marginal Value Theorem (MVT), which accounts for optimal behaviour for maximising resources intake rate. Does this self-bias help humans maximise rewards when foraging for their own benefit compared to foraging for the benefit of others? Participants had to decide when to leave patches where reward intake was gradually depleting, in environments with different average reward rates. …

Advancements Of A Vibration-Based Sound Power Method For Direct And Indirect Applications, Ian Charles Bacon Nov 2024

Advancements Of A Vibration-Based Sound Power Method For Direct And Indirect Applications, Ian Charles Bacon

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation advances the Vibration-Based Sound Power (VBSP) method for measuring the sound power of vibrating structures, expanding its applicability to a wider range of geometries and acoustic environments. The research addresses limitations of traditional sound power measurement techniques by developing an alternative method that achieves near Precision (Grade 1) accuracy while maintaining feasibility for in situ testing under uncontrolled acoustic conditions. After reviewing the current VBSP method in Unit 1, Unit 2 introduces stitching techniques for Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV) measurements, enabling accurate 3D scans and extending the method to complex geometries. Experimental validation is provided for baffled …

Impact Of Coverage And Guest Residue On Polyproline Ii Helix Peptide Antifouling, Rebecca S. Ahn, Henry T. Grome, Sogol Asaei, Geeta Verma, Christina S. Dang, Harihara Baskaran, Julie N. Renner

Faculty Scholarship

Polyproline II (PPII) peptide sequences are recognized as promising biomaterials because of their attractive antifouling properties. However, the mechanisms behind their antifouling behavior have not been fully characterized. In this work we show that PPII peptide coverage, controlled by adsorption time, significantly reduces the fouling of bovine serum albumin (BSA, a model foulant). In addition, guest residues introduced into the PPII sequence are shown to significantly impact BSA adsorption as well as human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) spreading. This research will help guide future PPII peptide designs for incorporation into novel biomaterials.

Purdue AI in P-12 Education Conference

This comparative study investigated barriers to AI integration in K-12 education across South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States, addressing a gap in understanding educators' perspectives (Casal-Otero et al., 2023). Semi-structured interviews with 45 educators were conducted and analyzed using Ertmer's first-and-second-order barriers to change framework (1999), revealing first-order and second-order barriers. Despite challenges, participants expressed positive views toward AI integration. The study identified four themes and highlighted differences between countries with and without clear AI integration policies. This contributes to a comprehensive understanding of AI integration in K-12 education across different national contexts.
