Improper Indeterminate Incarceration: Navigating The Constitutional Quandaries Of The Reagan Tokes Law's Powers And Procedures, Sophie M. Piteo

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article advocates for an amendment to the statutory provisions that make up Ohio’s indefinite sentencing scheme to better protect offender’s constitutional rights. Through an analysis of the Reagan Tokes Law and the Ohio Supreme Court’s ruling in State v. Hacker, this Article traces the evolution of Ohio’s indefinite sentencing framework, which was reinstated in 2019. It contrasts the current scheme with the previously invalidated, but very similar, Bad Time Law, which was struck down in 2000 for violating the separation of powers clause and due process rights. While the Reagan Tokes Law emerged from concerns for public safety …

Robust Data-Driven Run-To-Run Control Via One-Step Constrained Optimization For Automated Serial Sectioning, Rhianna M. Oakley Nov 2024

Robust Data-Driven Run-To-Run Control Via One-Step Constrained Optimization For Automated Serial Sectioning, Rhianna M. Oakley

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This Thesis develops a one-step predictive run-to-run controller (R2R-MPC) for automating a mechanical serial sectioning (MSS) system. MSS is a destructive material analysis process that iteratively removes slices of material and captures 2D images, reconstructing them into 3D representations. Commonly used in material science for characterizing materials and failure analysis, MSS typically operates in an open-loop fashion, which experiences high variability in material removal due to system disturbances. To address this, a robust closed-loop R2R-MPC is presented, modeling MSS process uncertainty using a linear differential inclusion identified from operational historical data. The R2R-MPC is posed as an optimization problem that …

Tumor-Infiltrating Mast Cells Confer Resistance To Immunotherapy In Pancreatic Cancer, Ying Ma, Xiangqin Zhao, Jingyan Feng, Suimin Qiu, Baoan Ji, Lu Huang, Patrick Hwu, Craig D Logsdon, Huamin Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) exhibits an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) contributing to its therapeutic resistance. Following our previous studies, we report that mast cells infiltrating the PDAC TME foster this immunosuppression and desmoplasia. Mast cell infiltration correlated with human PDAC progression, and genetic or pharmacological mast cell depletion reduced tumor growth and desmoplasia while enhancing survival in mouse PDAC models. Mechanistically, mast cell-derived IL-10 promoted PDAC progression. Strikingly, combining an agonistic anti-OX40 immunotherapy with mast cell blockade synergistically elicited durable anti-tumor immunity, marked by increased infiltration of CD8

Warrior Women And Trans Warriors: Performing Masculinities In Twentieth-Century Latin American Literature, Carolina Castellanos Gonella

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Latin American literature has depicted warrior woman and trans warrior characters in armed conflicts, but literary critics have not paid much attention to their empowerment. They also have critiqued these characters using traditional gender binary concepts or have viewed their access to power as evil or abnormal. Warrior Women and Trans Warriors: Performing Masculinities in Twentieth-Century Latin American Literature introduces a new perspective by analyzing how one trans warrior and two warrior women from three canonical novels contest traditional codes of behavior and appearance. It examines Pintada in the Mexican novel Los de abajo (1915); doña Bárbara in the Venezuelan …

Restorative Function Of Offshore Longline Mussel Farms With Ecological Benefits For Commercial Crustacean Species, Thomas Stamp, Simon J. Pittman, Luke A. Holmes, Adam Rees, Benjamin J. Ciotti, Harry Thatcher, Peter Davies, Alice Hall, Georgia Wells, Anna Olczak, Emma V. Sheehan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Offshore ocean aquaculture is expanding globally to meet the growing demand for sustainable food production. At the United Kingdom's largest longline mussel farm, we assessed the potential for the farm to improve the habitat suitability for commercially important crustaceans. Modelled distribution patterns (GAM & GLM) predicted the low complexity seabed beneath the mussel farm was 34–94 % less suitable for European lobster (Homarus gammarus) and brown crab (Cancer pagurus) than nearby rocky reefs. The mussel farm operations, however, contributed large amounts of living mussels and shell material to the seabed. Acoustic telemetry revealed that H.gammarus remained within the farm for …

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The UK government promotes heat pumps to replace gas boilers in the residential sector as a vital part of its strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2050. As climate change intensifies, heat pumps, traditionally used for heating, will also play a role in cooling to address indoor heat risks that threaten public health and increase energy demands. However, air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) might unintentionally exacerbate summer overheating and winter overcooling in residential neighbourhoods. This study uses a multi-scale modelling approach, combining SUEWS and EnergyPlus, to assess the impact of ASHPs on outdoor temperature in two idealised UK low-rise residential neighbourhoods …

Co-Ethnic Voting And The Analysis Of Trust Levels In Nigeria, Ayorinde Olanrewaju Nov 2024

Co-Ethnic Voting And The Analysis Of Trust Levels In Nigeria, Ayorinde Olanrewaju

Research Papers

Hale's (2008) relational theory posits that when less politically relevant ethnic groups experience marginalization and exploitation from the dominant ethnic groups, it creates an orientation in which these groups trust only their co-ethnics in distributing patronage and public goods. To what extent do variations in institutional trust among ethnic groups influence co-ethnic voting behavior? I argue that levels of trust in the president can be understood as one of the conditions under which voters use ethnic identity to decide their vote choice. When trust in a co-ethnic candidate is high, members of an ethnic group will prefer to vote along …

Something Is Rotten In The State Of Healthcare: Accountability, Affordability, And The Court Of Public Opinion, Isabelle Breier Nov 2024

Something Is Rotten In The State Of Healthcare: Accountability, Affordability, And The Court Of Public Opinion, Isabelle Breier

Duke Law & Technology Review

Many countries worldwide recognize a right to health and provide legal recourse for securing that right. By contrast, for many Americans, there is no legal right or remedy that enables them to access healthcare if they cannot afford it. While there are some statutes and measures in place, such as the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and Medicaid, coverage remains piecemeal and access to healthcare is not guaranteed. Conditioning people’s access to healthcare upon their ability to pay violates the foundational bioethical principle of justice. In the United States, individuals and advocates use social media to fill …

How Wildfires Threaten Water Resources: A Case Study Following The Largest Wildfire Recorded In New Mexico, Eric A. Joseph Nov 2024

How Wildfires Threaten Water Resources: A Case Study Following The Largest Wildfire Recorded In New Mexico, Eric A. Joseph

Civil Engineering ETDs

Wildfire disturbance propagation along fluvial networks remains poorly understood. We use incident, atmospheric, and water-quality data from the largest wildfire in New Mexico’s history to quantify how this gigafire affected surface runoff processes and mobilized wildfire disturbances into fluvial networks after burning 1382 km2. Surface runoff post-fire increased compared to pre-fire conditions, and precipitation events that are frequently observed in the affected watershed (<2-year recurrence) and fell during the post-fire first rainy season resulted in uncorrelated, less frequently observed runoff events (10-year recurrence). Wavelet coherence analysis highlighted that water quality disturbances propagated variably along the network, even at sites located >160 km downstream of the burn perimeter. Our findings emphasize the need to incorporate spatially resolved longitudinal sampling designs into wildfire water quality research and highlight the spatiotemporal co-dependency among atmospheric, terrestrial, aquatic processes …

Resolution Enhancement For High Numerical Aperture Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography Using Aperiodic Multilayer Masks, W Ethan Maguire Nov 2024

Resolution Enhancement For High Numerical Aperture Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography Using Aperiodic Multilayer Masks, W Ethan Maguire

Theses

As extreme ultraviolet lithography tools with higher image numerical apertures are introduced, the range of angles at the mask multilayer are increased. This represents a challenge for maintaining through-angle mask reflection using the current periodic mask multilayer structures. In addition to reflectance amplitude, the phase of reflected light, which plays an important role in imaging, is also strongly influenced by increasing angles. The propagation of light through each bilayer in the stack imparts a phase shift based on incidence angle. This accumulates over many layers, inducing phase effects which are unique to each illumination point. While adjustments to multilayer period …
