Human Nature, Karl Smith Nov 2024

Human Nature, Karl Smith

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

Building a brand means looking beyond a product or organization and finding an aspirational vision that creates value for the consumer. Through my design work, I want to transform products and other subject matter and transform them into unique, powerful experiences. By using intentional design choices, I can create effective visual communication. My design centers on strong hierarchy, bold color, and clear typography that creates attractive, memorable, and distinct visual identities.

Human Nature represents the positive impact a brand can have on the world by authentically connecting with consumers to provide real benefits. Skincare is the pursuit of beauty and …

Sebastian, Sebastian Byars Nov 2024

Sebastian, Sebastian Byars

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

The name "Sebastian" reflects my journey and process throughout my show. Growing up in small-town Paris, TN, my passion for fashion felt out of place. During college, I faced mental health struggles, and thrifting became my escape, sparking a love for clothing history. I now enjoy sewing and reworking both modern and vintage pieces, focusing on creativity and discovery over intention. Often, I ask myself, “What can I create from what I already have or want to discover?”

My work combines model and product photography, sculptural garment displays, and branding rooted in my work. Blending workwear with editorial aesthetics, I …

What Lives And What Lingers, Kaylee Vanlue Nov 2024

What Lives And What Lingers, Kaylee Vanlue

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

Like a flash in the night, reality blurs, and colors take shape. Manifestations spark within the form of a dream, allowing us to momentarily connect with those who are and were. This body of work draws inspiration from generational narratives that echo through time, particularly mid-century themes intertwined with Vietnamese and American heritage.

At the heart of this exhibition lies a personal dream that has evolved alongside my journey from childhood to adulthood. Each piece serves as a visual exploration of perspective and identity, rooted in the mid-century miniatures of a dollhouse living room from my youth and cultural themes …

The Last Crusade, Catrena Kovaloski

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

Through photographs, I utilize minimal and direct composition to address objectification of the female form and domestic violence. The photographs I take focus forwardly on the subject matter and are meant to have the viewer interpret the scene without any unwanted distractions. By incorporating myself as the model, I allow my experience to be shown through my eyes rather than as an outsider. The photos with their black and white tonality correlate with color theory as they strip away the emotion from the scene and allow the viewer to interpret the work. My photographs address abuse on the psyche portrayed …

Human Impacts On Mammal Diversity From The Pleistocene To The Present, Carson P. Hedberg Nov 2024

Human Impacts On Mammal Diversity From The Pleistocene To The Present, Carson P. Hedberg

Biology ETDs

Humans have fundamentally altered the planet’s biodiversity. It is critical to characterize these changes, but also to understand how they impact the structure and function of modern ecosystems. This dissertation investigates how anthropogenically mediated species losses and/or introductions influence ecological function and community structure in mammals across multiple temporal and spatial scales. We found that selective loss of large-bodied mammals over the Late Quaternary has led to severe losses in functional diversity in modern ecosystems, suggesting megafaunal mammals contribute distinct ecological functions. These changes to mammal diversity and distribution over millennia have altered both global patterns in functional diversity and …

Reduced K+ Build-Up In T-Tubules Contributes To Resistance Of The Diaphragm To Myotonia, Jessica H. Myers, Kirsten Denman, Chris Dupont, Brent D. Foy, Mark M. Rich Nov 2024

Reduced K+ Build-Up In T-Tubules Contributes To Resistance Of The Diaphragm To Myotonia, Jessica H. Myers, Kirsten Denman, Chris Dupont, Brent D. Foy, Mark M. Rich

Physics Faculty Publications

Patients with myotonia congenita suffer from slowed muscle relaxation caused by hyperexcitability. The diaphragm is only mildly affected in myotonia congenita; discovery of the mechanism underlying its resistance to myotonia could identify novel therapeutic targets. Intracellular recordings from two mouse models of myotonia congenita revealed the diaphragm had less myotonia than either the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) or the soleus muscles. A mechanism contributing to resistance of the diaphragm to myotonia was reduced depolarization of the interspike membrane potential during repetitive firing of action potentials, a process driven by build-up of K+ in small invaginations of muscle membrane known as …

Enhancing Frp-Concrete Interface Bearing Capacity Prediction With Explainable Machine Learning: A Feature Engineering Approach And Shap Analysis, Yanping Zhu, Woubishet Zewdu Taffese, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study introduces a novel approach to predict the shear bearing capacity of FRP-concrete interfaces using explainable machine learning. Eight algorithms are employed: three standalone models (Artificial Neural Network, Support Vector Regression, and Decision Tree) and five ensemble learning models (Bagging, Random Forest, Adaptive Boosting, Gradient Boosting, and Extreme Gradient Boosting). Four scenarios with varying input features, including engineered features inspired by mechanics-based bearing capacity equations, are examined. Notably, the inclusion of engineered features such as the stiffness of the FRP strip (Kf) significantly enhanced prediction accuracy and efficiency, although the width correction coefficient (bf/bc) did not yield significant benefits, …

Battle Of The Ch Motions: Aliphatic Vs Aromatic Contributions To Astronomical Pah Emission And Exploration Of The Aliphatic, Aromatic, And Ethynyl Ch Stretches, Vincent J. Esposito, Salma Bejaoui, Brant E. Billinghurst, Christiaan Boersma, Ryan C. Fortenberry, Farid Salama

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Strong anharmonic coupling between vibrational states in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) produces highly mixed vibrational transitions that challenge the current understanding of the nature of the astronomical mid-infrared PAH emission bands. Traditionally, PAH emission bands have been characterized as either aromatic or aliphatic, and this assignment is used to determine the fraction of aliphatic carbon in astronomical sources. In reality, each of the transitions previously utilized for such an attribution is highly mixed with contributions from both aliphatic and aromatic CH motions as well as non-CH motions such as CC stretches. High-resolution gas-phase IR absorption measurements of the spectra of …

Experiencing Ai: Learning Through Exploration, Nicole Mishnick, Dana Wise

Teaching Repository of AI-Infused Learning

The strategy of experiencing AI is centered around AI exploration and reflection in a doctoral-level technology course. Throughout the course, students were encouraged to use AI to complete assignments. However, they were also asked to critically reflect on the impact of AI use on their academic development and understanding of the coursework. Through discussion, reflection, and exploration, students learned to navigate the complexities of AI in a way that aligns with academic values and professional expectations.

Exceptional Points Induced By Unidirectional Coupling In Electronic Circuits, Wenzheng Zhao, Yeang Zhang, Zixuan Gao, Delong Peng, Jun Long Kou, Yan Qing Lu, Ramy El-Ganainy, Şahin K. Özdemir, Qi Zhong

Michigan Tech Publications

Exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems have attracted considerable attention due to their novel applications in several fields such as optics, electronics, and mechanics. Typically, exceptional points are constructed through gain and loss modulation or dissipative coupling within the framework of parity-time symmetry or anti-parity-time symmetry. Recent demonstration of unidirectional coupling in optical resonators to create exceptional points has offered an alternative approach. This study extends this concept to electronic circuits, examining exceptional points that emerge in unidirectionally coupled LC circuits. We show that this circuit undergoes resonance frequency splitting that exhibits either linear or square-root scaling with the strength of …

Multi-Decadal Aspen Dynamics Show Recruitment Bottleneck Across Complex Mountain Community, Michael T. Stoddard, Kyle C. Rodman, Connor D. Crouch, David W. Huffman, Peter Z. Fulé, Kristen M. Waring, Margaret M. Moore

Aspen Bibliography

Changes in forest structure and shifts in tree species composition have occurred globally due to climate change and altered disturbance regimes. With climate trending toward warmer and drier conditions, these altered forest communities may reorganize in diverse and unpredictable ways. This is especially true in mountain environments where a range of vegetation types and abiotic conditions coexist. In this study, we used long-term permanent plot data from a site spanning broad environmental gradients to assess regeneration and mortality patterns in populations of aspen (Populus tremuloides). The study site, located on the San Francisco Peaks, Arizona, USA, is near …
