Introduction:

Soybean is an important protein and oil crop, and improving yield has traditionally been a major breeding goal. However, salt stress is an important abiotic factor that can severely impair soybean yield by disrupting metabolic processes, inhibiting photosynthesis, and hindering plant growth, ultimately leading to a decrease in productivity.

Methods:

This study utilized phenotypic and genotypic data from 563 soybean germplasms sourced from over 20 countries. Employing four distinct models—we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using four models, including MLM, MLMM, FarmCPU, and BLINK in GAPIT 3, we conducted a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) to identify single nucleotide …

Stochastic Predictive Modeling Of Social Media Stocks And Reliability Of Hard Disk Drives, Sameer Anand Nov 2024

Stochastic Predictive Modeling Of Social Media Stocks And Reliability Of Hard Disk Drives, Sameer Anand

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, social media has emerged as a highly appealing investment sector due to its substantial returns. Our research focuses on creating a predictive model for the financial performance of social media companies. We gathered data from five companies in the S&P 500: Meta, Etsy, Match, Pinterest, and Alphabet. We developed a non-linear, data-driven stochastic analytical model that employs real data, incorporating six financial indicators and four economic indicators, to forecast the weekly closing prices of these social media companies with an accuracy of 94.7%. Additionally, we ranked the statistically significant indicators and their interactions based on their percentage …

Measuring And Modeling Grease Degradation, Alan Gurt Nov 2024

Measuring And Modeling Grease Degradation, Alan Gurt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lubricating grease is an ideal lubricant for many devices such as roller bearings, journal bearings, slide bearings, gears, and many types of joints due to its simplicity. Once grease is put in place, it can often provide adequate lubrication for extended periods of time without the need for a complex supply system that would generally be needed for oil lubrication. However, during prolonged use, various degradation mechanisms change the physical and chemical properties of grease, possibly leading to inadequate performance and machinery failure.

In order to succinctly quantify the degradation of grease, it is essential to have robust, meaningful test …

Development Of Machine Learning-Based Tool For Prediction Of Long-Term Field Performance Of Asphalt Concrete Overlays In A Hot And Humid Climate, Elise Mansour

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The performance of pavement plays a critical role in Maintenance, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (MR&R) for highway agencies. Reliable and accurate estimation of pavement performance can be instrumental in prioritization of the limited resources and funding for highway agencies. The latter requires robust prediction models that can handle large-scale, real-world data and can forecast pavement performance in the long run. Unfortunately, the traditional performance prediction models have raised concerns regarding their efficiency and accuracy. It is because these models were based on a limited number of explanatory variables, were not up-to-date and were designed for forecasting short-term (up to five years) …

Forensicllm: A Local Large Language Model For Digital Forensics, Binaya Sharma

LSU Master's Theses

Large Language Models (LLMs) excel in diverse natural language tasks but often lack specialization in fields like digital forensics. Their reliance on cloud-based APIs or high-performance computers restricts their use in resource-limited environments, and response hallucinations could compromise their applicability in forensic contexts. We introduce ForensicLLM, a 4-bit quantized LLaMA-3.1-8B model fine-tuned using Retrieval Augmented Fine-tuning (RAFT) on 6,739 Q&A samples extracted from 1,082 digital forensic research articles and curated digital artifacts. Evaluation on 2,244 Q&A samples showed that ForensicLLM outperformed the base LLaMA-3.1-8B model by 4.06%, 5.43%, and 15.79% on BERTScore F1, BGE-M3 cosine similarity, and G-Eval, respectively. Compared …

Mitigation Of The Environmental Impacts Of Lithium Extraction And Lithium Battery Manufacturing, Dominick R. Strollo Nov 2024

Mitigation Of The Environmental Impacts Of Lithium Extraction And Lithium Battery Manufacturing, Dominick R. Strollo

Sustainability Conference

Lithium extraction and the production methods utilized for lithium-ion batteries can have a large impact on the areas directly surrounding them, and if not mitigated properly, the rest of the world as well. For these batteries to be produced, lithium must be mined and refined from sources all around the world. The main concern of lithium mines is their impact on the water cycle and the surrounding water tables due to the heavy metals involved in the process and the sheer amount of water required. Production of the batteries themselves using the lithium slurry is far less impactful on the …

Techno-Economic Analysis Of Waste Plastic Gasification, Henrik Don-Yor Ketting Nov 2024

Techno-Economic Analysis Of Waste Plastic Gasification, Henrik Don-Yor Ketting

Master's Theses

The increasing generation of plastic waste and its environmental impact has driven interest in alternative disposal methods such as gasification. This study presents a techno-economic analysis of the gasification of waste plastics, specifically polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), to produce syngas. A two-stage process—thermal decomposition followed by steam reforming—was simulated using Aspen Plus. The simulation results were validated against experimental data available in the literature. The economic analysis was conducted by estimating the capital and operating costs of the gasification plant, considering factors such as feedstock costs, energy requirements, and syngas purification systems. Net Present Value Calculations were used to …

Assessing Weed Canopy Cover In No-Till And Conventional Tillage Plots In Winter Wheat Production Using Drone Data, Judith N. Oppong, Clement E. Akumu, Sam Dennis

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Weed canopy cover assessment, particularly using drone-acquired data, plays a vital role in precision agriculture by providing accurate, timely, and spatially detailed information, enhancing weed management decision-making in response to environmental and management variables. Despite the significance of this approach, few studies have investigated weed canopy cover through drone-based imagery. This study aimed to fill this gap by evaluating the effects of conventional tillage (CT) and no-till (NT) practices on weed canopy cover in a winter wheat field over two growing seasons. Results indicated that in the 2022–2023 season, weed populations were similar between tillage systems, with a high mean …

Are College Students' Grocery Shopping Habits Consistent With The Mediterranean Diet Guidelines? A Preliminary Report, Montana Grace Ayala Nov 2024

Are College Students' Grocery Shopping Habits Consistent With The Mediterranean Diet Guidelines? A Preliminary Report, Montana Grace Ayala

Master's Theses

The number of people diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus continues to grow. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risks of developing heart disease. Fruit and vegetable consumption is low across the country. Improving fruit and vegetable consumption for adults might start with improving intake earlier in life because it can influence better food habits. Following the Mediterranean diet at a young age can prevent chronic diseases from developing. It is well known that college students have diets that are not consistent with healthy eating habits and can be influenced by the need for …

Challenge, Hindrance, Or Both: Exploring The Relationship Between Motivational State And Employee Experience Of Job Demands, Leonard Hudson Taylor Nov 2024

Challenge, Hindrance, Or Both: Exploring The Relationship Between Motivational State And Employee Experience Of Job Demands, Leonard Hudson Taylor

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the most common typologies of workplace stressors is the challengehindrance framework (Cavanaugh et al., 2000). Challenge stressors are job demands that are perceived by employees as obstacles to be overcome to learn and achieve (LePine et al., 2005). Conversely, hindrance stressors are job demands that are perceived by employees as unnecessarily thwarting personal growth and goal attainment (LePine et al., 2005). While useful, Cavanaugh et al.’s tendency to label stressors as one or the other categorically was later disputed, in that there is more variability in how stressors are experienced than Cavanaugh et al. described (Webster et al., …

Simulations, Modeling And Data Analysis Of Parity Violating Electron Scattering Experiments, Yufan Chen Nov 2024

Simulations, Modeling And Data Analysis Of Parity Violating Electron Scattering Experiments, Yufan Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

In the Standard Model (SM) of nuclear and particle physics, parity violation is incorporated through the representation of the weak interaction as a chiral gauge interaction. Only the left-handed components of particles and right-handed components of antiparticles participate in weak interactions in the Standard Model. This implies that parity is asymmetric for the weak interaction. Parity violating electron scattering (PVES) experiments are designed to probe the physics parameters related to the SM, with the possibility to discover physics beyond the SM (BSM) by measuring the parity violating asymmetry 𝐴𝑃𝑉 of longitudinally polarized electrons scattered off unpolarized targets with high precision. …

Attachment Styles As Moderators Of Loneliness In Remote Work, Brody Tj Loughlin Nov 2024

Attachment Styles As Moderators Of Loneliness In Remote Work, Brody Tj Loughlin

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the role of attachment styles in moderating the relationship between remote work and loneliness. Drawing on attachment theory, which posits that early life experiences shape attachment styles and influence social interactions, the study examines whether attachment styles (anxious, avoidant, and secure) moderate the association between remote work and feelings of loneliness. The research targets 394 remote workers, using a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design with proportional stratified sampling to reflect the distribution of hybrid and fully remote work arrangements in the U.S. workforce. The Extent of RemoteWork measure, the Three-Item Loneliness Scale, and the Adult Attachment Scale assess …

How Helpless Are You? The Need For Closure And The Need For Cognitive Preferences As A Moderating Effect In The Relationship Between Perceived Self-Efficacy And Learned Helplessness, Aungelique Renea Sledge Nov 2024

How Helpless Are You? The Need For Closure And The Need For Cognitive Preferences As A Moderating Effect In The Relationship Between Perceived Self-Efficacy And Learned Helplessness, Aungelique Renea Sledge

Doctoral Dissertations

A substantial amount of research has been shown that the impact of self-efficacy has shown positive and negative effects. Additionally, the need for closure defined as an individual's motivational degree to reach firm answers, as opposed to ambiguity has also been shown to have diverse effects for individuals when their closure needs are threatened or unobtained. Research has posited that to successfully obtain and/or avoid reaching closure in various situations, an individual must be able to process information in a way that is quick, heuristic, and stereotypical (e.g., cognitive structuring) or in a way that is much slower, effortful, and …
