Measuring Integrated Accessibility For Sustainable Mobility: A Fuzzy Set Approach Case Study, Behnam Tahmasbi, Poria Hajian, Farzaneh Tahmasbi, Qian He

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Sustainable transportation is vital to climate justice and social equity. Despite the efforts to achieve sustainability, there is still a lack of adequate measurement that integrates land use and transportation systems, which can be barriers to planning implementation. With methodological improvements in fuzzy theory application, this study develops an integrated index to measure the sustainability of multimodal accessibility. We do so by defining a fuzziness degree based on the different trip purposes and modes of transportation with a case study in Isfahan, Iran. Sustainable accessibility indicators were developed for walking, biking, and public transportation to represent the performance of each …

More Than A Place For Social Capital Creation: Public Library As A Place For Immigrants’ Social Integration, Nafiz Z. Shuva

Publications and Research

Studies have shown that public libraries, one of the most trusted social institutions, play an important role in helping immigrants adjust to their host country. Although there have been quite a few international studies reporting the role that public libraries play in newcomers lives in the host country, few studies, especially in the context of the U.S., comprehensively reported local public libraries’ role in newcomers’ social integration. Previous studies on immigrants’ usage of public libraries have mainly focused on highlighting public libraries as meeting places that facilitate social capital creation for newcomers or describing the usage of public libraries among …

Comic books in their current form have been a staple of American pop culture for nearly a century. The combination of art and narrative provides a unique storytelling medium that has evolved with each new batch of artists and authors over the decades. The imagination's impossible and fantastical qualities are actualized in ways that non-visual literature cannot compete with, reaching audiences of all ages and reading comprehension. However, like with all fiction, the influence of reality cannot be denied. Despite the colorful costumes and progressive storylines, comic book stories suffer from a long-standing misogynistic motive that has long plagued literature. …

Phishing Emails: An Evolving Cyberattack, Brooke Waltz

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

This paper describes the history of phishing attacks and how they turned into cyberattacks, focusing on companies. Over the course of 34 years, phishing has been evolving at an alarming rate, especially with AI now coming into play. As phishing attacks have become more prominent towards companies, there has been an increase in financial loss and data breaches, resulting in a loss of trust in companies. With this loss, companies are trying to find solutions to this problem. Some notable attacks were the RSA breach in 2011, the Texas Energy Company in 2014, and the ILOVEYOU virus in 2000. They …

Arrest The President, Hypothetically, Leo Lombardi Nov 2024

Arrest The President, Hypothetically, Leo Lombardi

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog

By what authority does one dare direct that famous phrase, “j’accuse!” at the state’s supreme executor of law? Is there a mechanism, through which a citizen can hold a national government to account? Can the citizen's arrest serve as a symbolic insistence that international humanitarian law be enforced? International humanitarian law is coming to be defined by the dereliction of duty. Where a rules-based international order once stood as a lofty ideal, the reality of a nuclear-armed world now looms over the field’s failures.

This post was originally published on the Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review on November 14, …

Safe Reinforcement Learning For Intersection Management In Riti Communities Under Rare Extreme Events, Yuanzhang Xiao Nov 2024

Safe Reinforcement Learning For Intersection Management In Riti Communities Under Rare Extreme Events, Yuanzhang Xiao

CSET Project Reports

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the transportation sector, with applications spanning autonomous vehicles, driver injury prevention, and traffic management. Efficient traffic management, particularly through adaptive intersection control, holds significant potential for reducing congestion. This study explores the application of reinforcement learning (RL) to adaptive traffic signal control in rural, isolated, tribal, and indigenous (RITI) communities, which face unique challenges such as rare extreme weather events. Standard RL approaches struggle in these contexts due to limited exposure to these rare events. In our study, we first evaluate several mainstream RL algorithms and identified two most promising approaches. …

Adaptive Mesh Refinement For Variational Inequalities, Stefano Fochesatto Nov 2024

Adaptive Mesh Refinement For Variational Inequalities, Stefano Fochesatto

Mathematics and Statistics

Variational inequalities play a pivotal role in a wide array of scientific and engineering applications. This project presents two techniques for adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) in the context of variational inequalities, with a specific focus on the classical obstacle problem. We propose two distinct AMR strategies: Variable Coefficient Elliptic Smoothing (VCES) and Unstructured Dilation Operator (UDO). VCES uses a nodal active set indicator function as the initial iterate to a time-dependent heat equation problem. Solving a single step of this problem has the effect of smoothing the indicator about the free boundary. We threshold this smoothed indicator function to identify …

Extracting, processing, and delivering energy requires energy itself, which reduces the net energy available to society and yields considerable socioeconomic implications. Yet, most mitigation pathways and transition models overlook net energy feedbacks, specifically related to the decline in the quality of fossil fuel deposits, as well as energy requirements of the energy transition. Here, we summarize our position across 8 key points that converge to form a prevailing understanding regarding EROI (Energy Return on Investment), identify areas of investigation for the Net Energy Analysis community, discuss the consequences of net energy in the context of the energy transition, and underline …

Best Practice Advice For Asthma Exacerbation Prevention And Management In Primary Care: An International Expert Consensus, Neil Skolnik, Barbara P. Yawn, Jaime Correia De Sousa, María Mar Martínez Vázquez, Amanda Barnard, Wendy L. Wright, Austin Ulrich, Tonya Winders, Stephen Brunton Nov 2024

Best Practice Advice For Asthma Exacerbation Prevention And Management In Primary Care: An International Expert Consensus, Neil Skolnik, Barbara P. Yawn, Jaime Correia De Sousa, María Mar Martínez Vázquez, Amanda Barnard, Wendy L. Wright, Austin Ulrich, Tonya Winders, Stephen Brunton

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Primary care clinicians play a key role in asthma and asthma exacerbation management worldwide because most patients with asthma are treated in primary care settings. The high burden of asthma exacerbations persists and important practice gaps remain, despite continual advances in asthma care. Lack of primary care-specific guidance, uncontrolled asthma, incomplete assessment of exacerbation and asthma control history, and reliance on systemic corticosteroids or short-acting beta2-agonist-only therapy are challenges clinicians face today with asthma care. Evidence supports the use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) + fast-acting bronchodilator treatments when used as needed in response to symptoms to improve asthma control and …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction Obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing renal cell carcinoma (RCC) but paradoxically correlates with improved outcomes in metastatic cases. Moreover, the data on the relationship between obesity and postoperative outcomes following nephrectomy are inconsistent. Accurate prediction of postoperative outcomes, including complications, 30-day readmissions, and mortality, is essential for improving patient outcomes in surgical procedures. In this study, we utilized ML models to predict such outcomes in RCC patients undergoing nephroureterectomy, radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, and other excision procedures on the kidney using data from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP; 2016- 2021). Methods A gradient-boosted …
