Evolution Of International Collaboration In China’S Biomedical Technology And Policy Implications, Xinyu Liu, Fang Wang, Liang Xi
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
In light of the rapid advancement of biomedical technologies and intensifying geopolitical competition over technological dominance, international cooperation in this field has garnered significant attention among scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders. This study employs comprehensive patent data spanning from 2002 to 2023 across the global biomedical landscape to systematically investigate the characteristics and evolution patterns of both global and Chinese biomedical inventions. Employing econometric analysis of patents and social network analysis, the research examines three key dimensions: patent output, technological pathways, and collaboration networks. Three research findings are derived. Firstly, China has transitioned from a “catch-up collaborator” to a critical …

Kernels Of Motor Memory Formation: Temporal Generalization In Bimanual Adaptation, Ian S. Howard, Sae Franklin, David W. Franklin
Kernels Of Motor Memory Formation: Temporal Generalization In Bimanual Adaptation, Ian S. Howard, Sae Franklin, David W. Franklin
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In daily life, we coordinate both simultaneous and sequential bimanual movements to manipulate objects. Our ability to rapidly account for different object dynamics suggests there are neural mechanisms to quickly deal with them. Here we investigate how actions of one arm can serve as a contextual cue for the other arm and facilitate adaptation. Specifically, we examine the temporal characteristics that underlie motor memory formation and recall, by testing the contextual effects of prior, simultaneous, and post contralateral arm movements in both male and female human participants. To do so, we measure their temporal generalization in three bimanual interference tasks. …

Major Crime Trends Differ In New York City And New York State, Jeffrey A. Butts, Gina Moreno
Publications and Research
Researchers at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center analyzed police-reported index crimes across New York State from 2010 to 2024, focusing on trends in violent and property offenses across three regional groups: New York City, its surrounding suburbs, and Upstate New York. While violent and property crimes declined statewide through 2020, both surged in NYC and its suburbs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upstate regions showed continued or renewed declines. Per capita crime rates reveal more modest increases in NYC and notable decreases in other areas, underscoring regional disparities in crime trends post-2020.

2024–2025 Flyers
Glenn Fine was the Inspector General of the Department of Justice in the Clinton, Bush and Obama Administrations. He was also the acting Inspector General of the Department of Defense from 2016 until 2020, when he was replaced by former President Trump as part of a series of IG firings that the Washington Post called a "slow-motion Friday night massacre." Fine will talk about the role Inspector General play in holding the federal government to account and why he thinks they need more protection.

Existing literature suggests that infection-specific mechanisms may play a significant role in the onset and progression of dementia, as opposed to the broader phenomenon of systemic inflammation. In addition, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG)-coenzyme A (CoA) reductase inhibitors have been proposed as a potential therapeutic approach for sepsis, given their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We investigated the neuroprotective effect of an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (simvastatin) by analyzing neurodegenerative markers, mitochondrial respiration, and neuronal tracing in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and thalamic nucleus reuniens (RE) of sepsis survivor animals. Adult Wistar rats were subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture or left non-manipulated. …

Navigating Critical Incidents As Black Women Assistant Principals In Title I Charter Schools: A Narrative Inquiry, Marsha T. Henry-Lewis
Navigating Critical Incidents As Black Women Assistant Principals In Title I Charter Schools: A Narrative Inquiry, Marsha T. Henry-Lewis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The racial discipline gap and the school-to-prison persist despite contemporary discourse, legislation and trending best practices implemented to reduce exclusionary discipline and its related consequences. However, school leaders are often faced with critical school discipline events, that based on predetermined consequences, end with students being excluded from school. For my study, critical incidents needed not be major incidents, but they hold some level of significance in the lives of those involved. This study examined how Black women assistant principals experienced critical school discipline incidents while they worked in Title I charters schools in Florida. Narratives were captured during individual interviews …

Nowadays, researchers have shown interest in hydrogen energy because it is regarded as a clean energy and a viable alternative to carbon-based fossil fuels. However, hydrogen has low volumetric energy density and must be stored in large volumes to fulfil global energy demands. Underground hydrogen storage in a geological structure is considered the best choice due to its safety and higher storage capacity than surface storage. In this study, the advancing θa and receding θr contact angles of the stearic acid–aged calcite before and after the treatment with different concentrations (10–100 mg/L) of methyl orange (MO) were measured at reservoir …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Anthropogenic pressures such as climate change and nutrient pollution are causing rapid changes in the marine environment. The relative influence of drivers of change on the plankton community remains uncertain, and this uncertainty is limiting our understanding of sustainable levels of human pressures. Plankton are the primary energy resource in marine food webs and respond rapidly to environmental changes, representing useful indicators of shifts in ecosystem structure and function. Categorising plankton into broad groups with similar characteristics, known as “lifeforms”, can be useful for understanding ecological patterns related to environmental change and for assessing the state of pelagic habitats in …

Robust Voltage Regulation For Dc Microgrids Via Passivity-Based Sliding Mode Control, Edoardo Vacchini, Michele Cucuzzella, Pablo Borja, Antonella Ferrara
Robust Voltage Regulation For Dc Microgrids Via Passivity-Based Sliding Mode Control, Edoardo Vacchini, Michele Cucuzzella, Pablo Borja, Antonella Ferrara
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper proposes a decentralized sliding mode control approach to the voltage regulation problem in a DC microgrid consisting of distributed generation units interconnected with each other through resistive-inductive power lines and supplying unknown nonlinear loads. In particular, the port-Hamiltonian structure of the system suggests the design of a suitable sliding manifold such that the system on this manifold exhibits desired passivity properties. This approach simplifies the control design and relaxes some restrictive assumptions required by other controllers proposed in the literature, while offering satisfactory performance.
