Multi-Generational Dispersal And Dynamic Patch Occupancy Reveals Spatial And Temporal Stability Of Seascapes, Charlotte Clubley, Tiago A M Silva, Louisa E Wood, Louise Firth, David T Bilton, Edna O'Dea, Antony Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The success of non-native species (NNS) invasions depends on patterns of dispersal and connectivity, which underpin genetic diversity, population establishment and growth. In the marine environment, both global environmental change and increasing anthropogenic activity can alter hydrodynamic patterns, leading to significant inter-annual variability in dispersal pathways. Despite this, multi-generational dispersal is rarely explicitly considered in attempts to understand NNS spread or in the design of management interventions. Here, we present a novel approach to quantifying species spread that considers range expansion and network formation across time using the non-native Pacific oyster, Magallana gigas (Thunberg 1793), as a model. We combined …

Analysis Of Dual, Onboard Storage And Separation Of Biogas In Carbon-Based Adsorbed Gas Systems, Kyle Newport, Carlos Wexler, Peter Pfeifer, Fateme Rezaei

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct utilization of "low-grade" biogas, as an important sustainable energy resource, provides a viable approach to avoid the energy-intensive upgrading step that is often required to separate CO2 from CH4 in order to produce a pipeline-grade fuel gas. This study investigated dual, onboard storage and separation of biogas in an adsorbed gas system (AGS) over two highly porous carbon sorbents, Br-318 and Nuchar, in the pressure range of 0-55 bar. The AGS was pressurized with a 50/50 vol % CH4/CO2 feed and working capacities as a function of charge-discharge pressures and temperatures were determined and …

Red Harvester Ants Pogonomyrmex Barbatus (Smith, 1858) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Do Not Distinguish Between Sorghum Head Mold Symptomatic And Asymptomatic Seeds, Lilly Victoria Elliott-Vidaurri, Hannah J. Penn, Robin A. Choudhury

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Red harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex barbatus (Smith, 1858) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), common in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, are known to gather seeds from areas around their nests and store the seeds inside their nests for later consumption. As these ants often nest in and near agricultural fields, some of these seeds may be from crops and may also be infected with fungal plant pathogens. These pathogens can degrade seed coats and may cause the seeds to rot within the ant nests, decreasing storage time and potentially spreading the pathogen to other stored seeds. We studied how head mold, a …

All Decisions

The court denied the tenant's motion for a temporary restraining order to stay an eviction. The court found that the tenant had failed to demonstrate a likelihood of success on the merits or irreparable harm. The court also noted that the tenant had not complied with the procedural requirements for a motion to reargue a prior order.

Aero Mgt. Co. V. Moghadasian

All Decisions

In this holdover proceeding, the landlord attempted to evict the tenant for failure to sign a renewal lease, citing a rent increase and the tenant's non-purchase status in a co-op under the Martin Act. The court ruled the renewal lease offer invalid due to its retroactive start date, rendering the landlord's notice to terminate was not sufficient under RPL §226-c and the case for eviction untenable. The case was dismissed as a result of the invalid lease offer and the failure to meet legal requirements.

Hany Mahhmoud As Administrator Of The Estate Of Gaber Mahmoud V. Aviles

All Decisions

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court issued an Interim Order to Correct, requiring the landlord to address multiple housing code violations, including mold and a broken toilet, within specific timeframes. The court found that the uninhabitable conditions in the apartment, including the broken toilet, necessitated the issuance of a Class C violation. This order was issued without prejudice to the landlord's defenses in an anticipated Housing Part proceeding brought by the tenant.

Molecular Mechanisms Governing Osteosarcoma Pulmonary Metastasis, Niveditha Nerlakanti Nov 2024

Molecular Mechanisms Governing Osteosarcoma Pulmonary Metastasis, Niveditha Nerlakanti

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a bone cancer that commonly metastasizes to the lung. Despite advances in the development of targeted therapies for treating solid malignancies, broad-acting chemotherapies remain the first line of treatment for OS. In assaying the efficacy of approved therapeutics for non-OS malignancies, we identified the histone deacetylase 1 and 2 (HDAC1 and 2) inhibitor, romidepsin, as effective for treating established lung metastatic OS. However, romidepsin has noted toxicities in humans, thus we aimed to define the primary mechanisms through which HDAC1/2 mediates OS progression to identify more selective druggable targets/pathways. Microarray and proteomic analyses of romidepsin-treated OS cells …

Theses

Reverence is a series of wooden objects that highlight the beauty, subtleties, and surprises found in the quieter moments of nature. These pieces fluctuate from both literal and figurative interpretations of form, movement, and memory. Through the integration of curves, light, and hand-carved textures, I developed work that holds a collection of moments from the natural world. Reverence is an invitation to pause, explore, and revere the beauty that surrounds us, nurturing a deeper bond with the world we inhabit. I invite you to take a walk with me as I explore the rhythms and patterns of nature that are …

Fewer than half of individuals with a suspected Mendelian or monogenic condition receive a precise molecular diagnosis after comprehensive clinical genetic testing. Improvements in data quality and costs have heightened interest in using long-read sequencing (LRS) to streamline clinical genomic testing, but the absence of control data sets for variant filtering and prioritization has made tertiary analysis of LRS data challenging. To address this, the 1000 Genomes Project (1KGP) Oxford Nanopore Technologies Sequencing Consortium aims to generate LRS data from at least 800 of the 1KGP samples. Our goal is to use LRS to identify a broader spectrum of variation …

The human auditory cortex is organized according to the timing and spectral characteristics of speech sounds during speech perception. During listening, the posterior superior temporal gyrus is organized according to onset responses, which segment acoustic boundaries in speech, and sustained responses, which further process phonological content. When we speak, the auditory system is actively processing the sound of our own voice to detect and correct speech errors in real time. This manifests in neural recordings as suppression of auditory responses during speech production compared with perception, but whether this differentially affects the onset and sustained temporal profiles is not known. …

Chromosomal inversions (INVs) are particularly challenging to detect due to their copy-number neutral state and association with repetitive regions. Inversions represent about 1/20 of all balanced structural chromosome aberrations and can lead to disease by gene disruption or altering regulatory regions of dosage-sensitive genes in cis. Short-read genome sequencing (srGS) can only resolve ∼70% of cytogenetically visible inversions referred to clinical diagnostic laboratories, likely due to breakpoints in repetitive regions. Here, we study 12 inversions by long-read genome sequencing (lrGS) (n = 9) or srGS (n = 3) and resolve nine of them. In four cases, the …

Local Tone Mapping Of Mixed Hdr And Sdr Content That Preserves Sdr Elements, Alec Mouri Nov 2024

Local Tone Mapping Of Mixed Hdr And Sdr Content That Preserves Sdr Elements, Alec Mouri

Defensive Publications Series

In many contexts, users view mixed high and standard dynamic range content (HDR/SDR) on their devices. For example, on HDR-capable smartphones, a user may view an HDR image with SDR user interface (UI) elements overlaid on it. In such contexts, when the user captures a screenshot and stores the result in an SDR image file, tone mapping can result in degradation of the SDR elements on the image. This disclosure describes a local tone mapping approach that can be used to convert HDR-SDR mixed content to SDR, where HDR elements are tonemapped without impacting SDR elements. The approach can be …

Professional Development For Library Interns: Creation Of A Guide And Program, Rebecca Hedreen, Jessica Bernier, Alexis Haakonsen, Jennifer Mottolese, Ariss Tiu

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Seeing a need for more structured mentorship in library professional development, an internship supervisor created a reading guide for her interns at a mid-sized public university. The librarian and the first four interns who used the guide as part of their internship describe their experiences with this new reading program. Besides enabling the discovery of interesting articles and videos, we hope that the focus on professional development will encourage internship supervisors to include explicit mentorship in professional development and encourage interns to ask for more support in developing this crucial practice.
