Background Subacute and chronic subdural hematomas are common and frequently recur after surgical evacuation. The effect of adjunctive middle meningeal artery embolization on the risk of reoperation remains unclear.
Methods In a prospective, multicenter, interventional, adaptive-design trial, we randomly assigned patients with symptomatic subacute or chronic subdural hematoma with an indication for surgical evacuation to undergo middle meningeal artery embolization plus surgery (treatment group) or surgery alone (control group). The primary end point was hematoma recurrence or progression that led to repeat surgery within 90 days after the index treatment. The clinical secondary end point was deterioration of neurologic function …
A Class Of Stable Nonlinear Non-Hermitian Skin Modes, Hamed Ghaemi-Dizicheh
A Class Of Stable Nonlinear Non-Hermitian Skin Modes, Hamed Ghaemi-Dizicheh
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a well-known phenomenon in open topological systems that causes a large number of eigenstates to become localized at the boundary. Although many aspects of its theory have been investigated in linear systems, this phenomenon remains novel in nonlinear models. In the first step of this paper, we look at the conditions for the presence of quasi-skin modes in a semi-infinite, one-dimensional, nonlinear, nonreciprocal lattice. In the following phase, we explore the survival time of the quasi-skin mode in a finite nonlinear lattice with open edges. We study the dependency of the survival time on …

Regarding Friendship In Place-Based Development For Colleges And Universities, Craig Mattson
Regarding Friendship In Place-Based Development For Colleges And Universities, Craig Mattson
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This paper addresses the phenomenon of colleges and universities that attempt to repair the reputation of higher education in American society by engaging long disregarded or damned neighbors. This engagement is both long overdue and deeply fraught, especially as predominantly white academic communities interact with Black and Brown organizations and neighborhoods. Drawing on interview data from qualitative interviews among predominantly white institutions and residents of color, this essay argues that one way to decolonize college and community partnerships would entail the practice friendship across institutional and ethnic lines.

Finding effective ways to monitor laying hen welfare is challenging as UK flock sizes can reach 16,000 birds. Eggs provide potential for welfare monitoring, as they are a daily output with previous evidence of links to stress. We explored the associations between stressors and eggs using two complementary studies. In Study 1, hens experienced social or heat stressors and eggs were scored daily for defects in shell characteristics. All eggs were scored on a three-point scale: 1 (no defect); 2 (minor defects); or 3 (unsuitable for whole egg sale in the UK). Texture defects were higher after stress treatments and …
