Narrow Orchard Systems For Pome And Stone Fruit - A Review, Alessio Scalisi, Mark G. O'Connell, Dario Stefanelli, Shuangxi Zhou, Tim Pitt, Darren Graetz, Kevin Dodds, Liqi Han, Roberta De Bei, Jill Stanley, Ken Breen, Ian Goodwin

Horticulture Research Articles

The main characteristics of Narrow Orchard Systems (NOS) are (i) narrow canopies, with (ii) multiple closely-spaced upright leaders and (iii) narrow inter-rows, regardless of tree spacing within the row. In NOS, planting density can be reduced compared with super-high and ultra-high density planting systems on dwarfing rootstocks, utilising a wider range of rootstock vigours coupled to proportional increases in both within-row tree spacing and upright leader number per tree. This paper reviews the development of NOS and results of research carried out on apple, pear, sweet cherry, peach, nectarine, apricot and plum in production regions worldwide. The history of orchard …

Motivational Dysregulation With Melanocortin 4 Receptor Haploinsufficiency, Alex M. Steiner, Robert F. Roscoe, Rosemarie M. Booze, Charles F. Mactutus

Faculty Publications

Obesity, by any standard, is a global health crisis. Both genetic and dietary contributions to the development and maintenance of obesity were integral factors of our experimental design. As mutations of the melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4R) are the leading monogenetic cause of obesity, MC4R haploinsufficient rats were fed a range of dietary fat (0–12 %) in a longitudinal design. Physiological and motivational assessments were performed using a locomotor task, a 5-choice sucrose preference task, an operant task with fixed and progressive ratios, as well as a distraction operant task. Dendritic spine morphology of medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the nucleus …

Academic Engagement Amongst Commuter Students: A Comparative Analysis, Rebecca Turner, Oliver Webb, Christie Pritchard Nov 2024

Academic Engagement Amongst Commuter Students: A Comparative Analysis, Rebecca Turner, Oliver Webb, Christie Pritchard

Professional Services

As the profile of students entering higher education (HE) has diversified, so too has their residential status. Where students live partly reflects the agenda for widening access but is also a response to rising costs associated with university participation. In the UK, more students are commuting, despite associated challenges and reports of lower academic out-comes. We used survey data (N > 500) to compare engagement between first years who either relocated to attended university or commuted. Overall, commuter students appeared more engaged, demonstrating positive study behaviours and readiness to work alongside course mates. Results indicated that online learning facilitates continuity and …

Understanding The Impact Of Cultural Competency Development On College Students Through Experiential Learning: A Study Of An Honors High-Impact Course, C. H. Kevin Lee Nov 2024

Understanding The Impact Of Cultural Competency Development On College Students Through Experiential Learning: A Study Of An Honors High-Impact Course, C. H. Kevin Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore how students develop cultural competency through participation in an experiential learning-embedded college course. Existing literature often addresses career readiness, student success, cultural competency, and faculty-student affairs collaboration as distinct areas of research. However, while students may engage with diversity best practices as leaders or through diversity-related courses, bridging the gap between curriculum and competency development remains a critical area for ongoing discussion.

This study focused on a course I designed on Korean culture and identity, which provided an overview of topics such as history, politics, cuisine, music, and current events. The …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Maritime Resiliency In The Red Sea: Lessons From The Persian Gulf And Strait Of Malacca, Arman Mahmoudian

GNSI Decision Briefs

From natural disasters to geopolitical conflicts, the world’s critical infrastructures face constant threats. Yet, it is not the absence of disruptions that ensures stability, but a system’s ability to absorb shocks, recover, and adapt—a quality known as resiliency.

In the context of macro-systems, like nation-states, resiliency is a vital trait that guarantees stability and continued functionality and serves as a key factor in preserving the state's existence.

In the maritime domain, resiliency refers to the capacity of supporting maritime infrastructure-- shipping lanes, ports, naval forces--to withstand and adapt to disruptions while maintaining operations. Maritime resilience is critical to the infrastructure …

Memory Management In Complex Join Queries: A Re-Evaluation Study, Shiva Jahangiri, Michael J. Carey, Johann-Christoph Freytag Nov 2024

Memory Management In Complex Join Queries: A Re-Evaluation Study, Shiva Jahangiri, Michael J. Carey, Johann-Christoph Freytag

Computer Science and Engineering

Efficient multi-join query processing is crucial but remains a complex, ongoing challenge for high-performance data management systems (DBMSs). This paper studies the impact of different memory distribution techniques among join operators on different classes of multi-join query plans under different assumptions regarding memory availability and storage devices such as HDD and SSD on Amazon Web Services (AWS). We re-evaluate the results of one of the early impactful studies from the 1990s that was originally done using a simulator for the Gamma database system.

The main goal of our study is to scientifically re-evaluate and build upon previous studies whose results …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

TBC1D3 is a primate-specific gene family that has expanded in the human lineage and has been implicated in neuronal progenitor proliferation and expansion of the frontal cortex. The gene family and its expression have been challenging to investigate because it is embedded in high-identity and highly variable segmental duplications. We sequenced and assembled the gene family using long-read sequencing data from 34 humans and 11 nonhuman primate species. Our analysis shows that this particular gene family has independently duplicated in at least five primate lineages, and the duplicated loci are enriched at sites of large-scale chromosomal rearrangements on Chromosome 17. …

Novel Nanocomposite Of Carbonized Chitosan-Zinc Oxide-Magnetite For Adsorption Of Toxic Elements From Aqueous Solutions, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Ganna Gaber Ismail Eng.

Chemical Engineering

Herein, a novel nanocomposite (carbonized chitosan-zinc oxide-magnetite, CCZF) was developed to effectively remove toxic elements in water remediation. Combining the high adsorption capacities of chitosan with the magnetic properties of magnetite and the chemical stability of zinc oxide, the combination of these unique properties makes it an efficient and versatile material that offers a sustainable solution for water purification. The (CCZF) nanocomposite was synthesized through the coprecipitation method and characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The results showed …
