Mean Field Control Of Droplet Dynamics With High-Order Finite-Element Computations, Guosheng Fu, Hangjie Ji, Will Pazner, Wuchen Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Liquid droplet dynamics are widely used in biological and engineering applications, which contain complex interfacial instabilities and pattern formation such as droplet merging, splitting, and transport. This paper studies a class of mean field control formulations for these droplet dynamics, which can be used to control and manipulate droplets in applications. We first formulate the droplet dynamics as gradient flows of free energies in modified optimal transport metrics with nonlinear mobilities. We then design an optimal control problem for these gradient flows. As an example, a lubrication equation for a thin volatile liquid film laden with an active suspension is …

Phr-Nft: Decentralized Blockchain Framework With Hyperledger And Nfts For Secure And Transparent Patient Health Records, Huwida E. Said, Nedaa B. Al Barghuthi, Sulafa M. Badi, Faiza Hashim, Shini Girija

All Works

Blockchain technology holds significant promise for healthcare by enhancing the security and integrity of patient health records (PHRs) through decentralized storage and transparent access. However, it has substantial limitations, including problems with scalability, high transaction costs, privacy concerns, and intricate stakeholder access management. This study presents PHR-NFT, a novel framework that strengthens PHR privacy by utilizing Hyperledger Fabric and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to address these issues. PHR-NFT improves privacy and communication by letting patients keep control of their medical records while permitting temporary, permission-based access by medical professionals. PHR-NFT offers a transparent solution that increases trust among healthcare stakeholders through …

Sisu, Kaizen, And American Management: An Exploratory Study Of Cross-Cultural Approaches To Organizational Success, Bryan Hagenbarth

Honors Theses

Abstract Introduction

This thesis, “Sisu, Kaizen, and American Management: An Exploratory Study of Cross-Cultural Approaches to Organizational Success,” explores the interplay of cultural management methodologies across three nations – Finland, Japan, and the United States. It proposes a hybrid organizational model that integrates the principles of Sisu, Kaizen, and the American Dream (respectively) to common business practices.

Through the idea of “cross-cultural analysis,” this study delves into the underlying cultural frameworks – termed "human hardware" – that shape societal values and behaviors. The goal therein is to analyze the influencing characteristics that affect their adoption (and effectiveness) of foreign management …

Maternal separation (MS) in mice results in behavioral deficits and gut microbiota dysbiosis that all persist into adulthood. Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 modulates gut microbiota, alters systemic metabolites, and facilitates immune regulation. To assess the effect of DSM 17938 on biochemical and behavioural stress-associated changes, newborn mice were exposed to unpredictable MS (MSU) daily from day 7 to day 20 of life, with intragastric administration of DSM 17938 or PBS as control. Body weight, brain levels of cholecystokinin (CCK), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), corticosterone, and stool microbiota were assessed at day 21. Behaviour tests including Y-maze (YMT), Tail Suspension …

Loose Elements And Paving Matroids, Jagdeep Singh Nov 2024

Loose Elements And Paving Matroids, Jagdeep Singh

Combinatorics Seminar

Anelement of a matroid is free if it is contained in no circuits other than the spanning circuits. We call an element loose if it is contained in no circuits of size less than the rank of the matroid. Note that a matroid M is paving if and only if all elements of M are loose. In this talk, I will give a characterization of binary matroids that contain a loose element. For ternary matroids with a loose element, we show their size is linear in terms of their rank. Moreover, for a prime power q, we partially characterize all …

The Kerr-cat qubit is a bosonic qubit in which multiphoton Schrödinger cat states are stabilized by applying a two-photon drive to an oscillator with a Kerr nonlinearity. The suppressed bit-flip rate with increasing cat size makes this qubit a promising candidate to implement quantum error correction codes tailored for noise-biased qubits. However, achieving strong light-matter interactions necessary for stabilizing and controlling this qubit has traditionally required strong microwave drives that heat the qubit and degrade its performance. In contrast, increasing the coupling to the drive port removes the need for strong drives at the expense of large Purcell decay. By …

Immune Responses Drive Chorioretinitis And Retinal Pathology After Neonatal Cmv Infection, Jessica L. Mccord, John Y.S. Han, Ross E. Staudt, Nancy J. Philp Phd, Christopher M. Snyder

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes a common congenital infection leading to long-term neurological impairments including brain, cochlear, and ocular pathology. Infection of newborn mice with murine (M)CMV is an established model of neuropathology caused by congenital CMV infection, with recent work suggesting that brain pathology may be driven by immune responses. In the eye, however, CMV retinitis is thought to result from virus-driven necrosis in the absence of T cell responses. We found that MCMV infection of newborn mice recapitulates human eye disease after congenital CMV infection, including focal chorioretinitis, inflamed vasculature, and disrupted blood-retinal barriers. Moreover, infection drove extensive T …

Research Data Governance For Research Performing Organizations In Malaysia: A Modified Delphi Approach, Norzelatun Rodhiah Hazmi Nov 2024

Research Data Governance For Research Performing Organizations In Malaysia: A Modified Delphi Approach, Norzelatun Rodhiah Hazmi

Student Works (2020-2029)

The rapid growth of research data and its influence on research practices have led to an increased recognition of the importance of research data governance (RDG) worldwide. Nevertheless, a lack of literature explicitly delineates RDG implementation, and practices undertaken by research performing organizations (RPOs). This study sought to fill the existing gap in the literature by exploring the implementation and practices of RDG by RPOs within a post-positivist research paradigm. To achieve this, two methods were employed: a content analysis of RDG/Research Data Management (RDM) policy documents through desk research, and a four-round modified Delphi method, involving systematic solicitation and …

Between Responsive Gestures And Adaptive Actions: Deciphering The Differential Impact Of Csr Strategies On Stock Market Performance, Sonal Kumar, Rahul Ravi, Nilanjan Basu

Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles

Purpose – This paper offers a fresh perspective on this debate by exploring the direct relationship between a firm’s stock price performance and its CSR activities, placing particular emphasis on the underlying intent or motive behind the CSR initiatives.

Design/methodology/approach – This research examines the relationship between a firm’s stock price and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, distinguishing between responsive and adaptive CSR. While responsive CSR, often a response to negative events, elicits immediate positive stock performance, adaptive CSR initially triggers negative stock performance. However, long-term analysis reveals adaptive CSR leads to positive stock performance, especially for family firms. …

Ptsd Increases Risk For Hypertension Development Through Pvn Activation And Vascular Dysfunction In Sprague Dawley Rats, Xinqian Chen, Xin Yan, Chunxiu Yu, Qing-Hui Chen, Lanrong Bi, Zhiying Shan

Michigan Tech Publications

This study investigates the impact of single prolonged stress (SPS), a model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), on cardiovascular responses, hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) activity, and vascular function to elucidate the mechanisms linking traumatic stress to hypertension. Although SPS did not directly cause chronic hypertension in male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, it induced acute but transient increases in blood pressure and heart rate and significantly altered the expression of hypertension-associated genes, such as vasopressin, angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), and FOSL1 in the PVN. Notably, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) were predominantly elevated in the pre-autonomic regions of the …

The State Of Employment In The United States Among Young Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Eduardo Santos Del Rosario, Jennifer Emilie Mannino Ph.D., R.N., Cne, Patricia A. Eckardt, Dawn Distefano Dps

Nursing: Faculty Publications

Young adults with Cerebral Palsy (CP) have lower employment rates compared to young adults in general, as they may be confronted with physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments, coupled with personal and societal barriers as they mature. These challenges are clear, but the solutions are less so. Understanding the factors that impact employment is vital. This study aimed to identify and examine variables related to employment for this population through the lens of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) model. The Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA-911) federal dataset was used to examine the relationship between functioning and disability within …

Perpetua And Felicity: Faith And Courage In The Face Of Death, Mackenzie Unruh Nov 2024

Perpetua And Felicity: Faith And Courage In The Face Of Death, Mackenzie Unruh

Senior Honors Theses

Perpetua was a young, educated wife and mother who was martyred for her Christian faith. Because she was educated, she was able to record most of the events leading to her martyrdom in her diary. Her account was later supplemented by another author and narrator. The account also includes details about Felicity, a slave girl who was arrested with Perpetua. While Felicity is included in Perpetua’s story, most of the information about them focuses on Perpetua. Throughout history, and particularly in Medieval times, the Church has painted her as a perfect saint who rejected her family for unity with Christ. …

Understanding the genetics of kidney function decline, or trait change in general, is hampered by scarce longitudinal data for GWAS (longGWAS) and uncertainty about how to analyze such data. We use longitudinal UK Biobank data for creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate from 348,275 individuals to search for genetic variants associated with eGFR-decline. This search was performed both among 595 variants previously associated with eGFR in cross-sectional GWAS and genome-wide. We use seven statistical approaches to analyze the UK Biobank data and simulated data, finding that a linear mixed model is a powerful approach with unbiased effect estimates which is viable …

XTE J1829−098 is a transient X-ray pulsar with a period of ∼7.8 s. It is a candidate Be star system, although the evidence for this is not yet definitive. We investigated the twenty-year-long X-ray light curve using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope, and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image. We find that all three light curves are clearly modulated on the ∼244 days orbital period previously reported from PCA monitoring observations, with outbursts confined to a narrow phase range. The light curves also show that XTE J1829−098 was in …

Moving From Traits To The Dynamic Process: The Next Steps In Research On Human Resilience, Yannick Hill, Michael L. Dolezal, Patric C. Nordbeck, Ruud J. R. Den Hartigh, David Pincus, Adam W. Kiefer, Bernard P. Ricca

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The current literature on resilience shows a trend toward a dynamic process conceptualization, moving away from the previous trait-approach. However, the term “dynamic” is increasingly treated as a buzzword and is thereby oversimplified in the literature. The aim of this article is to develop a unified language pertaining to resilience as a dynamic process, so as to ensure progress in this field. First, we briefly introduce the traditional trait approach alongside the implicit assumption on which it is built. Next, we contrast this approach by discussing what dynamics entail and how this approach differs from mainstream psychological approaches. Specifically, dynamics …
