Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered on scholarship and service involving Latinx populations in new destination communities of the U.S. South. We show that ongoing and future scholarly work in the U.S. South can act as a mechanism for documenting these emerging Latinx communities while simultaneously …

The Ongoing Manipulation Game Of The Culinary World, Evelyn Graham Nov 2024

The Ongoing Manipulation Game Of The Culinary World, Evelyn Graham

Undergraduate Scholarly Works

Consumers are rarely aware of how much work actually goes into the enjoyment of their food. It is common knowledge that restaurant owners put a lot of work into their art, we can see this in the food they put forth, but so much is missed behind the scenes in the manipulation of the consumers' senses. Flavor perception is often confused for the simplicity of taste, however, I argue flavor perception is a complex construct of multisensory interactions, intentionally placed to influence consumers' purchasing behaviors. The combination of sights, scents, textures, sounds, and tastes work together to create the brain's …

In 2024, other factors continue to drive costs and disrupt the pharmacy landscape, including the implementation of new business models, pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) practices, the rebate system, regulatory changes, advancements in provider status, and potential Federal Trade Commission (FTC) interventions.

Mitigating Compassion Fatigue, Sylvia Lee Christian-James

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Compassion fatigue is the physical, emotional, and spiritual result of chronic self-sacrifice and/or prolonged exposure to difficult situations that renders a person unable to love, nurture, care for, or empathize with another’s suffering. The attributes that led nursing leadership to believe compassion fatigue (CF) was an issue for registered nurses (RN) at the project site facility included increased RN turnover, vacancy rates, absenteeism, and dissatisfaction. The project was to develop a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for the RN staff of an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The practice question was as follows: Does the evidence support usability of a standardized practice guideline …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project, Jacquelynn Hays

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ineffective communication in health care can lead to negative outcomes for patients, including medication errors; delayed or missed treatments; delayed or missed testing; poorer health outcomes, including death; and poor patient satisfaction. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate an education program on effective communication. The practice-focused question centered on whether health care staff demonstrated a change in their perceptions of effective intradisciplinary communication. Abortion Costs And The Language Of Torture, William J. Aceves Nov 2024

Abortion Costs And The Language Of Torture, William J. Aceves

Faculty Scholarship

Following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Org., several states imposed significant restrictions on abortion. Some of these states established medical exceptions that would allow a pregnant person to receive an abortion only if they face "a life-threatening physical condition aggravated by, caused by, or arising from a pregnancy that places the female at risk of death or poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function unless the abortion is performed or induced." This language highlights the extreme pain and suffering that pregnant people must experience to qualify for an abortion …

Rooted In Nature: Pre-Service Teachers' Development Of Nature-Based Pedagogical Insights Through A Forest School Field Experience, Janet Vanlone, Lauren Shearer, Makenna Luzenski, Ellen Amarante, Susan Chlebowski, Chris Boyatzis

Faculty Journal Articles

Outdoor education programs, such as Forest School, have physical, social-emotional, and academic benefits for children, and teachers trained in nature-based pedagogy are more likely to provide outdoor education opportunities for their students. Incorporating outdoor field experiences in teacher preparation may teach new teachers how to implement nature-based programming. However, little is known about how outdoor field experiences affect pre-service teacher development. Grounded in self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977), this mixed-methods study examined in a pretest-posttest design how participating in a 12-week outdoor field experience contributed to pre-service teachers’ (N = 9) knowledge of nature-based pedagogy and their self-efficacy. Participants also completed …

Book Talk: Watchdogs: Inspectors General And The Battle For Honest And Accountable Government, Jacob Burns Center For Ethics In The Practice Of Law

2024 Event Invitations

Inspectors General have been called the most powerful public officials you’ve never heard of. They work inside federal agencies, exposing corruption and ferreting out waste, fraud and abuse. But they’re also vulnerable to removal at the whim of the president. Glenn Fine was the Inspector General of the Department of Justice in the Clinton, Bush and Obama Administrations. He was also the acting Inspector General of the Department of Defense from 2016 until 2020, when he was replaced by former President Trump as part of a series of IG firings that the Washington Post called a “slow-motion Friday night massacre.”
