Sensor Fusion For Low Latency Palm Rejection Using Artificial Intelligence, Hadi Zadeh, Fei Wu Nov 2024

Sensor Fusion For Low Latency Palm Rejection Using Artificial Intelligence, Hadi Zadeh, Fei Wu

Defensive Publications Series

On devices with multiple input modalities, it can be difficult to ensure input accuracy, false palm detection, and provide low latency in the user experience of providing input and receiving corresponding response. Latency can come from the operating system application, or firmware catching up with speedy input from the user. In current devices, data from various input sources is used independently which can cause false palm detection and also introduces latency. This disclosure describes a central multi-sensor input hub (sensor hub) that enhances user input experiences on devices that support multiple input devices. The sensor hub can be implemented as …

Early Detection Of Mobile Device Battery Swelling Using Pressure-Sensitive Robot, Hadi Zadeh, Boris Mittelberg Nov 2024

Early Detection Of Mobile Device Battery Swelling Using Pressure-Sensitive Robot, Hadi Zadeh, Boris Mittelberg

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes automated techniques for early detection of swollen batteries in mobile devices using pressure-sensitive touchscreen testing using a pressure-sensitive robot. Subtle physical deformations in a device caused by battery swelling that can lead to critical safety hazards can be detected. The robot performs automated regression testing on devices that include batteries. During testing, the robot continually scans the device surface and reports changes in the surface profile. By changing the Z-height, the robot can be used to detect micrometer-level increases in the device height that can be indicative of one or more batteries of the device being swollen. …

Online forms in enterprise settings enable collection of information relevant to complex tasks such as putting together sales quotes. Form complexity can lead to errors, confusion, and/or delays as users that attempt to fill out the forms struggle to interpret the field meanings and navigate intricate processes. This disclosure describes techniques that build an understanding of forms using semantic and structural analysis, build contextual awareness based on profile data for entities completing a form and a dynamic knowledge base, and incorporate adaptive learning for error detection in forms. Techniques such as natural language processing, named entity recognition, question answering engines, …

Philosophy From The Standpoint Of Damaged Life: Adorno On The Ethical Character Of Thinking, Paolo A. BolañOs Nov 2024

Philosophy From The Standpoint Of Damaged Life: Adorno On The Ethical Character Of Thinking, Paolo A. BolañOs

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In this paper, I reconstruct Theodor W. Adorno’s philosophy from the standpoint of damaged life, which is a rhetorical way of rethinking the normative force of the philosophical enterprise after, or in the face of, the trauma of Auschwitz. Adorno’s ethical response to damaged life is informed by the “wrong state of things” which, for him, is the basis for philosophy’s revaluation of its language and the activation of the ethical character of thinking. I will argue that far from being a pessimistic stance, Adorno’s position is an emphatic rethinking of the role of philosophy in a life that is …

Diaphany: A Disseminar On Carapace, J. Pilapil Jacobo Nov 2024

Diaphany: A Disseminar On Carapace, J. Pilapil Jacobo

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

If Philippine cinema, during a time of dictatorial duress, has indeed gathered into its fold allegories of a certain social texture, then contemporary critique must also provide a rather thick notion of allegory itself, in order to describe the quality of the metonymic membranes which make possible the emergence of substance through eloquent surface. In this essay, I propose a critical elaboration of Laura Mulvey’s category “carapace,” and a subtle yet significant declension of surface, “diaphane,” in an attempt to intervene in the understanding of film as a plastic form with the tensile capacity to surpass its flatness by choosing …

Abraham's Silence, Roy Allan B. Tolentino Nov 2024

Abraham's Silence, Roy Allan B. Tolentino

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Adherents and critics of religion both have to face the conundrum of violence committed in the name of religion. Under what conditions would religions that espouse peace provide religious justification for violence? A reading of Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling reveals that the exception granted to Abraham, “the teleological suspension of the ethical,” only occurs in the context of “an absolute relation with the Absolute.” Abraham’s relationship with God reorients his relationship with Isaac, thus permitting Abraham to transgress the ethical in sacrificing his son. While this might appear to justify violence in the name of religion, the aporia of Abraham’s …

Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele Nov 2024

Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

That the ideal way to communicate and reach understanding is by speaking the same language, is a widespread view: it is rarely questioned in debates concerning language, (intercultural) communication, and interpretation. I shall argue that Hans-Georg Gadamer, too, suffers from this common language “syndrome.” Donald Davidson is one of the few philosophers who explicitly uttered qualms about the necessity of a common language. Davidson critiques Gadamer’s common language idea, and rightly claims that a common language is not needed for communication and understanding. I show that Davidson has been unable to develop this insight fruitfully and underestimates the importance of …

Exploring Pcat3 Expression In Arthritis: Proinflammatory Marker Patterns And P53 Involvement, Aida H. Alobaidi, Entkhab M. A. Alanisi, Khalid A. Alyodawi

AUIQ Complementary Biological System

This study investigated the role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) PCAT3 in arthritis, focusing on its impact on proinflammatory markers. Researchers analyzed both mRNA and protein levels of various proinflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-13) in arthritis patients and compared them to healthy controls. Additionally, PCAT3 expression was assessed in both patient groups and further investigated using siRNA knockdown in the human synovial cell line SW982. Results revealed distinct expression patterns of proinflammatory markers in arthritis patients, with TNF-α and IL-6 showing the highest levels. PCAT3 expression was significantly elevated in arthritis patients compared to controls. …

“What Kind Of Teacher Are You?”: Critical Communication Pedagogy In Abbott Elementary, India Hagen-Gates Nov 2024

“What Kind Of Teacher Are You?”: Critical Communication Pedagogy In Abbott Elementary, India Hagen-Gates

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In December 2021, Abbott Elementary debuted their first episode, following a cast of diverse teachers at an underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia. While there is previous research on the importance of tv representation and pedagogical practices in the media, this show presents a unique opportunity for analysis. Using Fassett and Warren’s (2007) commitments of Critical Communication Pedagogy as my main theoretical guide, I argue that Abbott Elementary showcases the ongoing process to improve pedagogy, specifically in the commitments of culture as central, language as constitutive, and reflexivity as essential.

Decision-Making As Communicated Narrative Sense-Making: Resilient Experiences Of Mormon Adoptive Parents, Blake Harms Nov 2024

Decision-Making As Communicated Narrative Sense-Making: Resilient Experiences Of Mormon Adoptive Parents, Blake Harms

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Adopting a child is a consequential decision with many effects on the wellbeing of individuals and families which is no less true within Mormon contexts. As such, scholarship within decision-making around adoption continues to focus on empirical, rational and other modernist frameworks to account for these vital decisions. In order to more fully account for a wholistic framework of how these decisions are made, this study proposes an narrative approach to decision-making to uncover the lived decision-making experience of Mormon adoptive parents holistically. Mormon adoptive parents were interviewed to understand their decision-making experience as process of communicated narrative sense-making (Koneig-Kellas, …

Becoming The Protagonist: Finding Oneself Through Studying Abroad In Japan, Clara N. Barnhardt Nov 2024

Becoming The Protagonist: Finding Oneself Through Studying Abroad In Japan, Clara N. Barnhardt

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

International experiences, including studying abroad, can impact individuals’ identities in many ways. What is this like in the case of an anime fan studying abroad in Japan for six weeks? What are potential ways in which anime fans can be transformed? Throughout this autoethnography, I make sense of the ways in which I personally navigated and was transformed by studying abroad in Japan. It is my hope that making sense of my journey will allow other anime fans traveling to Japan to make sense of their own adventures.

New American Terminology And The Immigrant Identity, Sheyla Finkelshteyn, Kate Nimako Nov 2024

New American Terminology And The Immigrant Identity, Sheyla Finkelshteyn, Kate Nimako

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Many cities in the US have a “new” American Welcoming Center with welcoming programs aimed at helping immigrants integrate into American society (NAWC, 2022; COC, 2022a). The language used by these centers implies that (1) there is a desire for immigrants to change to fit into the society (Wang & Mallinckrodt, 2006), (2) all immigrants are new to America and need to fit in and (3) American identity is the primary identity of a new immigrant. 19 immigrants shared their stories with us. We used Riessman’s (2008) thematic and dialogic analysis approach to analyze their identity and attitude toward the …

The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary Nov 2024

The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Resilience as a trope is often associated with the neoliberal ideal of individualized personal success, an ideal that is frequently used to deny the existence of structural oppression (Phipps, 2014). Analyzing cultural artefacts, however, can offer a reappraisal of how publics understand resilience in relation to neoliberal economic policy. In this paper, I analyze a 1993 film by Guillermo del Toro, titled Cronos, to understand how resilience can be presented as familial rather than individual, as well as the trickiness of using film to critique neoliberalism while under the influence of state agencies. In examining Cronos, I argue that …

Prevalence And Pathology Of Endoparasitic Infections Of Rock Pigeons (Columba Livia) In Taiwan, Chih-Li Yu, Yen-Li Huang Nov 2024

Prevalence And Pathology Of Endoparasitic Infections Of Rock Pigeons (Columba Livia) In Taiwan, Chih-Li Yu, Yen-Li Huang

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Pigeon racing is popular in Taiwan, but most lofts are located on residential roofs or in attics, which means pigeons could potentially spread parasites to humans. It is necessary to investigate the prevalence and diversity of endoparasitic infections in pigeons. This study investigated endoparasitic infections in 301 pigeons (both loft-kept racing and feral pigeons) in Taiwan using gross and histopathological examinations. The identified endoparasites included Trichomonas spp. (30.2%, 91/301); Ascaridia spp. (22.3%, 67/301); Haemoproteus spp. (20.6%, 62/301); Eimeria spp. (11.0%, 33/301); Capillaria spp. (7.3%, 22/301); Hexamita spp. (6.0%, 18/301); Raillietina spp. (4.7%, 14/301); Heterakis spp. (2%, 6/301); and Dispharynx sp., …

Accessibility Of National Parks And Other Natural Protected Areas For People With Disabilities: A Scoping Review Of The Academic Literature, Mark Weiler, Alison Whiting, Waqas Sajid, Neha Dewan, Tilak Dutta

Library Publications

National parks and protected wilderness areas provide benefits through leisure activities to many. Yet, many people with disabilities are unable to experience these benefits because of barriers. Therefore, it is important to understand how to improve access to these spaces for people with disabilities. The objective of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators to accessibility in national parks and protected natural areas. Using a scoping review methodology, we searched eighteen academic databases and found 44 sources meeting our eligibility criteria. Our findings include tables that map the literature by publication year, types of disabilities, specific national parks, park …
