Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) is a rare cyanotic congenital heart defect often associated with polycythemia and bleeding risk. A 7-year-old boy with uncorrected DORV presented with fever, melena, and shock. He was cyanotic, tachypneic, and tachycardic, with SpO₂ of 68% and a harsh ejection systolic murmur. Labs showed anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, and prolonged APTT. Tubex TF IgM was strongly positive. A diagnosis of typhoid fever with gastrointestinal bleeding and uncorrected DORV was made. Management included oxygen, inotropes, and fluid resuscitation. Propranolol was withheld. Severe infection with underlying cyanotic heart disease and coagulopathy presents a critical management dilemma.
Comparison Of Clinical Outcomes Between Provisional Stenting And Two-Stent Approach For True Left Main Bifurcation Lesions In The Era Of Imaging Guided Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Ming Leo Lau, Ho Fai Daniel Fong, Nim Pong Kwong
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background
Currently there are two strategies in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) of the true left main (LM) bifurcation lesions: provisional stenting and two-stent technique. The optimal treatment strategy for true LM bifurcation lesions is undetermined. In addition, the percentage of use of imaging-guiding in these studies was low. We would like to undertake a retrospective cohort study to compare the clinical outcomes of provisional stenting versus two-stent technique in treating the true LM bifurcation lesions with the help of intravascular imaging.
Methods
Data of consecutive patients undergoing PCI of true LM bifurcation lesions in Yan Chai Hospital from January, 2018 …

Pulsed Field Ablation Versus Cryoballoon Ablation For Pulmonary Vein Isolation In Atrial Fibrillation: A Single-Centre Experience, Wan Ying Kwok
Pulsed Field Ablation Versus Cryoballoon Ablation For Pulmonary Vein Isolation In Atrial Fibrillation: A Single-Centre Experience, Wan Ying Kwok
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) remains the cornerstone of rhythm control for atrial fibrillation (AF), with cryoballoon ablation (CBA) representing the established single-shot technology. Pulsed field ablation (PFA) offers a novel non-thermal approach utilizing electroporation, potentially enhancing myocardial selectivity while minimizing extra-cardiac injury. This study compares the procedural efficacy and safety of PFA and CBA.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study analysed 153 consecutive patients undergoing first-time PVI (CBA = 113; PFA = 40) for AF at a single tertiary centre. Primary efficacy endpoint was arrhythmia-free survival one year post-ablation, while the secondary efficacy endpoint was the improvement of symptoms, quantified …

An Unusual Cause Of Acute Constrictive Pericarditis, Yue Hin Tang, Raymond Chi Yan Fung
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Constrictive pericarditis, a condition where the pericardium thickens and constricts, has long been considered as a chronic sequela of prior insults to the pericardium such as heart surgery, repeated pericarditis, tuberculosis infection, radiation exposure, etc. Susceptible populations are thus expected to be middle-aged.
We present a case in which a young gentleman was diagnosed with acute constrictive pericarditis due to Adult-onset Still’s disease with macrophage activation syndrome. This case illustrated that constrictive pericarditis could happen in acute settings and thus the importance of cardiologists to maintain open-minded in search of a diagnosis

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
We report a rare case of myocardial infarction complicated by anterolateral papillary muscle rupture and right ventricular infarction in a 49-year-old man. Initial signs suggested pulmonary embolism, but imaging revealed inferolateral infarction with right ventricular involvement. Angiography showed a thrombosed obtuse marginal branch supplying a chronically occluded right coronary artery. Despite intervention, the patient developed refractory cardiogenic shock. Surgery revealed complete papillary muscle rupture; mitral valve replacement and bypass were performed, but the patient died postoperatively. This case highlights the fatal potential of uncommon infarction patterns and the limited success of surgery, emphasizing the need for alternative transcatheter strategies in …

The accounting profession is facing a growing crisis as it seeks to attract entry-level accounting staff. In Tennessee – like many states – accounting graduates, the primary talent pool for entry-level staff, are in decline. In a recent two-article series, the Tennessee CPA Journal reviewed the staffing crisis and the declining trend in accounting enrollment at Tennessee universities. To address the staffing shortage, the accounting profession must quickly analyze the causes and adapt to meet the demands of today’s workforce. Proposed solutions include increasing salaries, revising CPA exam requirements, and improving internships. This article reports on one potential area of …
Book Review: Basketball Beyond Paper, Chad Goebert
Book Review: Basketball Beyond Paper, Chad Goebert
Global Sport Business Journal
Dean Oliver’s Basketball Beyond Paper is a thoughtful and in-depth follow-up to his paradigm-shifting work in 2004, Basketball on Paper. Twenty years after Basketball on Paper laid the groundwork for possession-based efficiency metrics, Oliver returns with a deeper focus: incorporating the human side of the game. Rather than simply refining statistical models, Oliver argues that understanding motivation, emotional ups and downs, distractions, and team dynamics is just as critical to winning as traditional data analysis. Written with a direct and technical style, Oliver not only advocates for the importance of analytics in the transformation of how basketball is played, but …

UROP Posters
Objective: Research indicates that children who live in underserved urban environments are more likely to experience behavioral problems, such as social withdrawal, school adjustment problems, and self-reported delinquency (e.g., King, Huang, & Dewan, 2022). Studies have shown that for adolescents who later develop anxiety and depression, the neighborhood during childhood development could be a factor (Lee et al., 2018). Environmental conditions such as a higher risk of exposure to violence, limited community resources, and undergoing a significant life change in childhood can result in greater risk for psychological distress, including anxiety (King, Huang, & Dewan, 2022). The purpose of this …

Examining Geographic Access To Specialty Education In Richmond, Virginia, Nonso Akunwafor
UROP Posters
This study examines how the geographic distribution of selective admissions schools (SAS) in Richmond, Virginia, affects student enrollment patterns and access to specialized education. It aims to (1) identify whether spatial distribution and transportation availability create barriers to accessing SAS and (2) evaluate possible solutions for improving access to specialty education. SAS in Richmond are secondary schools with specialized and rigorous academic programs, requiring a selective process for admissions. Existing research has explored the equity implications of the admissions processes of these types of schools, but limited research addresses access from a geographic perspective, particularly for Richmond Public Schools (RPS), …
Trust On Trial: How U.S. Foreign Policy Eroded Public Trust, Rawan Al-Samarrie
Trust On Trial: How U.S. Foreign Policy Eroded Public Trust, Rawan Al-Samarrie
UROP Posters
Public trust in the U.S. government has declined sharply over the past several decades, falling from roughly 75% in the late 1950s to almost 15% today. This project examines how major U.S. foreign policy decisions, specifically during the Vietnam War, the post-9/11 Global War on Terror, and the ongoing conflict in Palestine, have contributed to this erosion of trust. Through qualitative analysis of historical records, public opinion data, and scholarly assessments of U.S. military actions and their global consequences, the research identifies recurring patterns in how government narratives, media framing, and revelations of human rights violations shape public perception. Findings …
Recovery Of Iron And Aluminum From Acid Mine Drainage For Beneficial Uses, Katelyn Renee Pepe
Recovery Of Iron And Aluminum From Acid Mine Drainage For Beneficial Uses, Katelyn Renee Pepe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a widespread issue across the globe, in which some of the most critical cases are created by the mining industry. Researchers have investigated ways to derive benefits from AMD, such as precipitating rare earth elements (REEs) to generate potential revenue from AMD treatment and supplement market demand. However, the bulk of precipitated sludge is composed of iron and aluminum, which also have market value but are discarded in current practice.
Using the Omega site in West Virginia (WV) as a representative AMD source, the objectives of this study are (1) to determine a replicable precipitation …
Screening Herbicides For Use In Newly Established Short Rotation Coppice Shrub Willow Plantations, Alex Thomas Smith
Screening Herbicides For Use In Newly Established Short Rotation Coppice Shrub Willow Plantations, Alex Thomas Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A major setback for the establishment of short rotation coppice willow plantations is the control of competition from weeds. Weed competition has been found to cause increased mortality which lowers biomass yields when left uncontrolled. Mechanical weed control methods are the most used method of weed control, but their use can be complicated by cost, labor availability and site topography. Chemical weed control is also complicated by the fact that willow species are particularly sensitive to herbicides. Across three trials, we screen 11 herbicides for their potential to control weeds without significantly decreasing the vertical growth of willow trees. This …

Research shows the profound impact teachers can have on student outcomes. The Teacher Practice Improvement Tool (TPIT) describes the practices of highly effective teachers, based on an extensive review of international research. Five domains—or aspects of practice—have been identified from this evidence. These areas of teachers’ work are strongly interrelated. The TPIT provides a point of reference for teachers to reflect on their current practices and identify areas for professional growth. This tool can be used for teacher self-reflection and to identify specific areas for further professional growth. The TPIT can also be used by aspiring teachers and other education …
Natural Capital Credit Risk Assessment In Agricultural Lending: An Approach Based On The Natural Capital Protocol, Francisco Ascui, Theodor Florian Cojoianu
Natural Capital Credit Risk Assessment In Agricultural Lending: An Approach Based On The Natural Capital Protocol, Francisco Ascui, Theodor Florian Cojoianu
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
It is increasingly recognised that financial institutions have significant impacts and dependencies on natural capital – defined as the stock of the world’s renewable and non-renewable natural resources and ecosystems that yield flows of environmental goods and services, which directly and indirectly underpin the global economy and human wellbeing. Historically, many of these impacts and dependencies have been overlooked. The value of goods and services that nature provides ‘for free’ has often been ignored, and resources have typically been priced at their cost of extraction, rather than the cost of their replacement or substitution, which would promote more sustainable long-term …
